- This video documents the restoration of a badly damaged plaster statue of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. The statue was made by Daprato Statuary of Chicago in the early 20th century. This video shows the restoration process in several stages, and we hope you enjoy it! We're a small family operation so we'd really appreciate a like, share or if you subscribe! Thank you! #statuerestoration #statuerepair #brushworks #plastermaster

I am grateful for your instructional statue repair videos. I've used many of your techniques and paints you used and had repaired a 4 1/2' statue of St. Rose. My client was very happy with my work. Thanks Again.
Gail
You’re very welcome. It makes us so happy when people learn from our efforts and are able to restore statues in many places around the world. God bless you.
WOW. This video is amazing. Great job!
Thank you Diamond6256! 🙏 We knew it would be a challenge when they handed us a "bag of parts!" 😆
I restored my church's large nativity set this past year, which had quite a bit of damage--your work was a source of inspiration for me. Thank you so much for sharing these!
Thank you, and blessings for serving your church with your talents!
I think I'll be restoring an image of Our Mother Mary that has darkened because of the candle fumes at Church.
What would be the Basic steps to go through, as I'm afraid that sanding ONLY Will not take all the old Paint away to repaint it.
Thank you and May Jesus bless you
@@joanahope3013 depending on how porous the statue is, and how thick the wax residue might be… You might consider warming it gently with a hairdryer, and using a dry paper towel to wipe off any wax that you can. You may find, then that a gentle sanding will expose the plaster to a point where you can paint it properly. Avoid using water on exposed plaster because it will be absorbed and it can make the plaster much weaker… Potentially even crumbling. It’s important to get the residue off because the paint will peel much more quickly if there is any wax underneath it. Hope this helps.
😊😊😊❤❤❤I really like your videos very great videos how to repair beautiful statues in Vietnam no one can beautify them like foreigners
Thank you! We're so glad you enjoy our videos and our work!
Hi Steve... What amazing work by you and Pauline. You are to be congratulated for piecing together a difficult project. The paintwork and shading by Pauline is nothing short of outstanding. You are both highly professional. Well done my friends. ❤
Thank you so much! Hope all is well.
Finally! Very inspiring video. Nice how you showed how you resgtore the hand. Also, that after painting it is needed sometimes to re-do certain places...I was wondering whether it is possible. as for the tools: I saw that for lips you use a brushe probably 'adjusted" - I need to adjust mine too, by simply cutting out the hair? Even very thin brushes get hairy pretty fast....
Hello Siostra Jadwiga! It’s always a joy to hear from you. Thank you for your kindness. Pauline does not trim her brushes. We just buy the very fine-tipped brushes and sadly they DO fray pretty quickly and we go through a lot of them.
Thank you very much for another wonderful video of your unbelievable talent. Your detail, especially the saint's face, is so lifelike and real. God has genuinely blessed you and your staff with rare talents and skills. I'm looking forward to have a Infant Jesus of Prague restored by you in the near future.
Thank you Father. 🙏 And God bless!
Beautify done!!! I so enjoy repairing statues and figures myself. (Though I'm disappointed when they break to begin with) Its nice to see how others do it!!!
Thank you and yes it’s sad when something breaks. But rewarding when it’s renewed! 🤗
Amazing work!
Absolutely incredible work!! Thank you for sharing! I was missing your videos 🤗
Thank you Missirmaa! I lost vision in my right eye this summer so we were out of commission for a while. Thank God my vision is getting close to normal and we are once again doing what we love! 🙏
I’m so sorry to learn about your vision! May the Lord heal you completely and restore your eyesight so you may continue to serve him 🤗
🙏😊
Parabéns um trabalho de gênio de vocês, te amamos aqui no Brasil!
Obrigado, Tiago. Deus abençoe você e o Brasil! 🙂
Another great video and restoration from you guys! I always come back and watch them before I start a new vintage chaukware restoration myself!
Thank you Chris! We enjoy your work too!
Great job! Nice teamwork.😊
Thank you! 😊🙏
Thank you Charlene! God bless you. Feel free to ask any questions, and we will be happy to help if we can…
Your work is amazing!! I'm so glad I found your channel. You both have a true gift!

That's so great!! I have a question, which material would be best to use when creating customization to a statue if it is made with resin? (Customization like adding some elements)
Thank you! And our suggestion for customized sculpting on resin would be a product called Apoxie Sculpt. It's made in the US, but we can get it here in Canada, or it can be ordered online. It goes a long way, so I'd recommend buying the smallest quantity available. You blend two parts together, and you get about 2-30 minutes to work with it. And it sticks to everything..even glass!
👏👏👏
Thank you! 😊
I need help please, I have a gypsum sculpture of Virgin Mary , the nose is totally broken and there are some paint scratches. Well I live in Syria and epoxy resin is missing or it can be found with a very expensive price.
I need a method to fix it and paint it with the most basic materials please. Thank you and God bless you❤
Hello! Without access to the materials it is of course more difficult. IF you can't access the Apoxie Sculpt, you can try using very basic plaster (Plaster of Paris) and if you find it is not strong enough, we have heard of artists using Plaster of Paris mixed with that apparently helps it hold stronger, but we have not tried it ourselves.
God Bless and best of luck with your project!
Such exceptional work! Thank you for sharing and teaching this! May I ask what type of paints you recommend for plaster statuary repair? You mention "premium paints." Is that the same as paints used for home projects? And may i ask what shine you recommend, flat, egg shell, satin, etc.? Thank you.
Thank you Sue B! Depending on the specifics of a project, we use Zinsser primers, Behr Premium (ie Dynasty) paints, and for the artistic work, Pauline uses professional level paints from Liquitex and Golden or other brands that are in the professional class (avoid using "student" level paints due to poor pigments). Keep in mind she usually custom blends many of the colours for things like skin tones and faces, and shadow tones etc. Our work is mostly with flat/matte paints, but in some cases where the statue may be subject to touching we will use low sheen paints or even apply a low sheen lacquer. Hope this helps!
Very helpful! Thank you! Getting ready to paint smaller statues I needed to repair at home. I enjoyed the patching and sanding part so far. Painting will be the most challenging skill for me to learn. May God continue to bless you and Our Lady keep you!
You’re very welcome and best of luck! God bless 🙏
I'm just starting to restore and have only done a few pieces. They want me to charge. How do you price your work. Doing it for the love of it is not going over well. I only wanted the cost of supplies. Do you have any suggestions? I pray to be a good as the both of you someday God willing. God's peace
Thanks for any insights Wendy
Coming up with a price can be difficult. If you’re doing it as a gift or maybe a parishioner you have a little more freedom with the cost than we do in having it as our main family income.
It really depends on the extent of the work. If you want to send us a couple of photos or communicate by email, we’d be glad to offer you a couple of opinions once we see what’s involved. God bless and good luck!
I'm going to renovate the church sculpture. Gypsum sculptures are always refurbished with pigments.
Best of luck with your project! 👍
Hi! I have a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. She's 19 to 20 inches stall and its made of unbreakable fiber but it has a small dot sized hole both of her eyes. One is at the top of her eyebrow and one is at the inner corner of an eye. What kind of material can i use to fix it?
Without seeing the statue, our best suggestion would be to use a product like Apoxie Sculpt. If you cannot source it, you could also try a common product called JB-Weld. It's also epoxy-based and although we haven't used it, we're told it works much like Apoxie Sculpt for repairing things like pinholes. Hope this helps, and best of luck!
@@BrushworksStatueRestoration thank you!
Eu tenho duas imagens aqui no meu quarto elas precisam ser Restauradas elas a Imagem do Beato Carlo Acutis e a Imagem de São José
Você está procurando conselhos sobre como restaurar essas estátuas, Luis?
whimple - white part of the habit - the Visitation Sisters wear it black.... on the ikons she has it black. -but maybe you simple followed how it was painted previously.
Yes Siostra Jadwiga we chose to restore the statue as it was created a century ago. Unless there is a glaring error we avoid correcting the pieces. We also see there are many online depictions of St Margaret Mary with a white whimple - even a few different styles of the whimple.

I have a question, what brand of oil paint do you use?
I also have another question, why didnt you guys add eye lashes?
Hi there. Depending on the statue, we use custom-blended acrylics as well as Behr Marquee paints. Interior or exterior depending on the statue's ultimate location. And while Pauline did add eyebrows, eye lashes would have to stand out three-dimensionally or be painted straight up onto the eyelids. That never looks good.
What kind of paint are you using on the statue?
Hello Ann. When required we use a primer made by Zinsser. And Pauline uses a mix of premium Behr paints as well as custom blending colours with professional grade acrylics. Liquitex is one of the brands she uses. I hope this helps.
Oh thank you sooo much! I have just aquired a very old statue that I'd like to restore and repaint. Thank you.
@@annhenry6056 Wonderful! Best of luck with your project and if you’d care to show your finished work when it’s done… We’d love to see it! God bless !
