  • This is a very long video, sorry. I was trying to cover as many details as possible and do as little un-necessary talking as possible. It is a good idea to disconnect the battery when working on these electronics, I didn't disconnect the battery as I had the car running, it was -13 outside when I did this video. Also, Sorry for the spotty video, it was snowing out today and I got some moisture on the lens. Hope this helps you change your bulbs. Putting it back together was a breeze. Just align your clips and push them back into place.
Keep a magnet handy so you don't lose any screws or clips... they'll fall under the dash and you never know if and when you see them again. They'll probably drop out eventually! Use a magnet! Much easier!
Testing all the bulbs is a great idea, once you have your displays out, pull the lenses off and clean them. There is a bit of dirt in the Multi function display because the buttons let it in. It is a good time to check all your bulbs and clean the lenses.

Great video! Thanks for sharing! If anyone is curious, the replacement part for a check engine light bulb for a 2000 Avalon is a Dorman 639-042

Thanks! Very helpful if I ever have a burned out bulb in my dash. When I replace one, I always replace them all, since it is already apart. It is a drag to replace one, then a week later another bulb burns out

I agree, I wonder what the total number is, any idea?

@@desiderious1 If faced with this task, I would try and find a dashboard assembly diagram so I could count them. That's what I did when I replaced the dash lights on my Mercury Villager many years ago. There were only two or three that still worked! I looked them up, and also counted them when I had the dash panel out. It was actually pretty easy with a Villager. Avalon looks like a total PIA just to get to the bulbs.

Thank you!! You’re video made this job, dare I say enjoyable. Just get a good trim puller kit and it was easy. Didn’t break or lose anything.
For those of us with an XL, to get to the odometer and clock bulbs you must disassemble the center piece. You must remove the front clear panel, the back panel and unscrew the circuit board. There’s a ribbon cable on the back that must be pulled out first. It just pulls out. I used a flathead to gentle pry it out once the board is out, the bulb location becomes apparent.

Thank you for posting this informative video.
As of this posting it is the only one that covers the 2000-04 Toyota Avalon of which I have a 03.
Two questions for you, what is the bulb number for the dash lights and how many in total are there?
I want to replace all of mine at once even though some are still good, so I do not have to pull the dashboard off again for several years to replace the bulbs.
Thanks, and keep up the great work. 👍

It is a pretty simple process... it's covered in your owners manual. Mine has a subwoofer, pull the whole assembly toward the front of the car to disengage the clips, then tilt it upward to get it all the way out. Hope this helps.

Sometimes cars come pre wired for other options but I can't say for sure as I don't know anything but my model. I did it on a 2003 Avalon xl and it works. Just make sure all the plugs are the same. You will have to calibrate the compass and reprogram the odometer to show the mileage in your vehicle though.
