Ever heard of Calle Ponzano? It’s a famous tapas street in Madrid that tourists don't really know about. Yoly and I hit 5 tapas bars - a mix of modern and traditional - along this famous strip. Octopus, scallops, bravas, rare tuna, craft beer, tapas so modern they use a blowtorch in front of you. It’s all here. Venga, let’s go! 🥝

Calle de Ponzano is really easy to get to. It’s only a few Metro stops north of the centre. Head for Metro stops Iglesia or Alonso Cano. If you look on Google Maps (goo.gl/maps/qBCG6N1d5v9nfLyXA) you’ll see that most of the bars are between Calle Rio Rosas to the north, and the start of the street about 4 blocks south. It gets really busy on weekends and evenings. We were there on a Wednesday at lunchtime which is when it’s quieter.
Here are the places we went to, and the address, and what we ordered
    1. El Doble
Old school beer and seafood bar - true Madrid! There are two on the street - we went to the original at this address: goo.gl/maps/iEvhg9JCmC6oree79
    We ordered:
Media ración of boquerones en vinagre: €7
    Ventresca salad with tomatoes: €15
    1. El Doble
Old school beer and seafood bar - true Madrid! There are two on the street - we went to the original at this address: goo.gl/maps/iEvhg9JCmC6oree79
    We ordered:
Media ración of boquerones en vinagre: €7
    Ventresca salad with tomatoes: €15
    2. Sala de Despiece
Modern tapas bar/restaurant where they create imaginative and delicious dishes from fantastic raw ingredients, and with a little bit of a show too. The bar is first-come, first-served - so get early to get in line. Or you can reserve online (www.saladedespiece.com/en/rese...) for their seated area alongside the bar (there is a €35 minimum food spend for reservations).
    Location: goo.gl/maps/X1Cc2s37BE5bqmvZ9
    We ordered:
    Rolex: €6.50
    Chuletón Zenital: €9.00
Beetroot dish which was off menu: €7
    Korean Truffle: €14
    3. Fide
Another famous traditional bar, with a particular focus on seafood. There are also two of these in the street, and we went to the original here: goo.gl/maps/zqQsGDVJTEUpdHAP6
    We ordered:
    Zamburiñas (scallops): €12
    Pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus): €18
    4. Sainete
A craft beer bar with 18 taps, including some beers from Madrid. The food is modern, but still rib-sticking.
    We ordered:
    Beermouth: €4.50
    Nomada Passiflora Sour: €2.80
    Brioche de Tartare: €8.00
    Patatas Bravas: €6.50
    5. DeAtún
A modern tapas bar and restaurant with a focus on tuna, especially the almadraba variety, which is fished off the coast of southern Spain and is very rare and very high quality (85% of the catch goes straight to Japan).
    Location: g.page/DeAtunPonzano?share
    We ordered:
Tuna with wakame sand = €19 “For 6 of them”
Tuna with asparagus = €19 “For 6 of them”
Tuna taco in a shiso leaf = €22 “For 4 of them”
Taco DeAtún con Chimichurri = €6.50
Taquitos DeAtún confitados con huevos de cordoniz y trufa de verano = €6.50

Muy buenos James y Yoly, when I lived in Madrid many years ago, fitting out an Irish Pub in Calle del Principe, 12, we were sitting out the rain in a bar/cafe just outside Sol around Calle Jeronimo/Calle Alcala. It was a bar called Roma or A Roma or something....the streets were awash with the rains and the gutters were full. As the cars dro slowly out of Plaza de Sol they drove waves of water waist high in the direction of the pedesrians.
Then something magical happened, the pedestrians fended off the wave of water with a Mexican Wave of their umbrellas...a lasting image of the street life of a city that refuses to be tamed by nature

@@rudrapratappaul867 when you live here you can considere that price abusive. 15-20 € is a regular price in a restaurant with first class ingredients for a salad. North Spain is where you can eat absolutely fabolus with a lot of good restaurants and a complete collection of Michelin Starred ones.
BTW, because of my former job I've travelled Spain and a half and Madrid is one of the worst places to have a drought beer: too much froth, no consistence, poor gas and tiny glasses.
Second BYW: usually potatoes go UNDER the octopus so they can get all flavours.

I did a shorter version of this tapas crawl in November 2019. Tried Vermut at El Doble and El Fide. Had a definite licorice flavor. Loved it. Do you know the brand? I'm trying to find it here in the States and all I get are dumb looks and open mouthed stares. Thanks.

Great video and also thank you for adding the addresses in Google maps.
You might want to consider putting all the bars and restaurants you recommend in a Google map list that you then can share.

Can you do a video on international food in Madrid? I’ve noticed a ton of restaurants with food from around the world here and I want to know what’s good!

Hi James. Appreciate your awesome videos, very informative:) Everytime Im in Madrid or Barcelona I struggle to find which tapas places are open after 12AM, as my flight almost always arrives late. I know most tapas bars close at 12, but some are open and serve food later. Can you do a guide on those? Cheers.

hmmm that is a tough one. Traditional places don't really open their kitchen after that, especially in Barcelona. I'll keep it in mind!

@@spainrevealed Yeah. I Barcelona we went to a tapas bar called Navia at the end of Carrer del Comerc which served food until 3 AM. In Madrid there was a place called Matador where we also had some food after 12 AM. Its just hard to search on google maps for late night tapas bars. Dont think its possible to filter and search places with opening hours. If you are able to find some and make a list/ video it would be awesome:) Have a great day!:) Cheers

In Madrid, try Taberna La Ardosa (calle Colón 13), great food and open until 2 am!

Went to Fide on your recommendation James. Miscommunication and lack of Spanish speaking skills meant we ended up with a bottle of red and white wine rather than a glass of each. What the hell we’re on holiday and spent the whole night there rather than moving on to your other recommendations m. It was fun night

Very informative video, as always! What are some Spanish key words that would signal that the meat is served raw? I know tartar, but if I would have seen the tbone steak on the menu I would have thought it's cooked.

I see there are Costco membership stores in Spain. Are they popular among the residents or are they strictly for foreigners? Thanks!

Canal ameno, divertido e instructivo. Como sugerencia estaría bien que hicierais un video recopilando comentarios de personas no españolas sobre sus reacciones cuando os ven saborear tapas que a la vista, o sabiendo los ingredientes les pueden parecer "scary"
