I love making tapas tour videos, and generally they take place in the historic centres of Spanish cities - Madrid, Barcelona etc. But this time I wanted to give you guys a true insight into the tapas bars of my Madrid neighbourhood. My barrio! These are places that tourists simply don’t discover, and are such wonderful institutions. The food is delicious and honest, the wine perfect, the prices fair and the company even better. I live in a neighbourhood called Delicias, which is only a few minutes metro ride from the central Puerta del Sol. Hop off the metro here, and amongst these streets are classic taverns, new little family-run tapas bars, bustling local joints, fancier places and everything in between. What I love about these bars is that they are set up purely to serve locals (not chase the tourist euro) and - most of all - they are such welcoming places to spend time in. Most of them are family-run, and have a great story or history behind them. While I love Spanish food, I think my first love might be the Spanish bar - a place which serves as a meeting point for neighbours to eat, drink, argue, shout, flirt, and everything in between. I think the Spanish bar is the most beautiful thing in Spain! And in this video we visit some TRUE Spanish bars.
Across this video I eat jamón, huevos rotos, torreznos (pork belly), grilled Iberian pork, grilled clams in garlic, grilled scallops, croquetas and a fabulously simple tomato drizzled with olive oil. And of course I know bar red wine, white wine, beer and (strangely for me!) sangria!
To get to this barrio, take the line 3 metro from Sol and get off at Delicias or Legazpi.

Spaniards really know how to enjoy the food and prepare it! I feel like I am a Spaniard trapped in anAmerican body! We have a beautiful Spaniard small restaurant very close to our home and I cannot stay away from it! Love everything Spaniard especially the women ha ha!

I am from the South in America, Kentucky. My granny died years ago, but we had the same appreciation for the amazing tomato grown right out of the yard.

So true re the tomatoes in Spain. I remember having simple sliced tomatoes for the first time on a weekend trip to Alicante with my Spanish girlfriend after moving to Barcelona. It was just a typical local bar and I wasn't expecting much but it literally took my breath away. I gasped and was in awe of how good it was. The flavours were just out of this world. And it was just a tomato. It was like I had never had a real one before. I tell that story often. I will never forget that. I just love Spain and its fabulous culture.
I feel the same way! Lived in Estepona for 15 years now and appreciation of tomatoes! Eaten in season you need nothing more than a little bread, oil!

In total agreement with you on the tomatoes, I can still remember all those years ago when I tasted my first Spanish tomato, I honestly couldn't believe the difference between what we are eating here in the UK and what was on offer there. Ever since that first taste it's usually the first thing I have when I go back and I've never been disappointed :)
I've said this before about other videos, but this one is the best video so far, and, at least for me, the most interesting topic.

Great vid! Subscribed! I lived on Calle Delicias from 2005 to 2011, 2 mins walk from Rossell. Great neighbourhood. I frequented El Rincon Asturiano on Calle Delicias, great cider, bravas, generous free tapas and the Fabada is excellent. Honourable mention too for El Principiado just up the street from Rossell. I haven't been in the old neighbourhood now for a year, can't wait to get back. Madrid is the best city in Europe by far. Thanks!
Oh and I nearly forgot for great Columbian food Patacón on the other side of Calle Delicias is the bomb

Greetings from a madrileño. These videos are just perfect. You should try Asturias and Cantabria to get marvelled with all the food and drinks there are over there. Also try Granada and Córdoba to have the best free tapas in Spain, you pay a glass and they serve you such an amount that you'll have eaten by the end of the drink.
Take a look to: Migas, Cachopo, Pulpo a la Gallega, Cocido Montañés, Cocido Madrileño, Cecina de León, Oreja, Morro, Bravas, Cochinillo Asado of Segovia, Judiones de la Granja, Gazpacho, Salmorejo, Sopa Castellana, Caldereta de Cabrito and Chanfaina of Extremadura, Calsots of Tarragona, Cochifrito, Perdiz en Escabeche, Carcamusas of Toledo, Lomo Ibérico ...

Hey btw, you should do a episode on romantic places to eat in madrid. It seems you can find great tapas everywhere, but we went to a place called Bresca tonight that had fantastic pasta and tigellas! Also the cafe across the street, La Infinito was a great stop to fuel up for all the walking we have been doing.

One idea - my wife has to have a gluten free diet and we were looking at going to Madrid but after my trip I'm concerned it might be a challenge as the cuisine is so predominantly bread / flour based - Maybe an idea for a video or a blog post??

James I will be visiting Madrid in March with the main purpose of attending a soccer match at Bernabeu stadium. I would love your opinion on whether I should stay in the Tetuan (near stadium) area, or stay more central to attractions and just commute to stadium on game day. Any advice will be appreciated.
