Anyone who wants a nice tough little hatchet should definitely start with an estwing. I have quite literally put mine through everything and just a couple minutes of edge maintenance every once in a while will keep it going for a very long time. Also using it as a hammer is much better than using other hatchets that have an eye that you could damage
I have one. It is a good axe. But I have come to the conclusion that the finish on the leather handle is not the best. It is too smooth and eventually cracks. I am tempted to sand off the finish and just oil the leather.
I bought an old used one at a garage sale for four dollars, I sanded the handle and rubbed it with boiled linseed oil. It now serves as my hunting axe and used to open up the chest on deer.
I have lots of hatchets, axes, and tomahawks. To this day, I'm still surprised how well the Estwing hatchet can split larger rounds of hardwoods. You wouldn't think it could but it does!
I still use it, but not as much as I used to. I find a small, folding saw to be lighter and easier to carry while out camping, so that has been my go-to wood cutting device lately.
Hey there NightOwl2022, I too have noticed on some other reviews that they show a nice leather sheath, which I really like the look of, however, my Sportsmans Axe was a gift, purchased in Canada, so ii had no choice in the matter, but perhaps in Canada they only sell them with the nylon sheath?
Really...ha ha I guess you haven't checked out all my other backcountry adventure videos, like canoeing the Everglades, Backpacking the Bruce Trail, paddling the Rio Grande River, trekking the Ganaraska Trail, canoeing the Lake Superior North Shore, paddling the French River and Georgian Bay coast, etc. etc. If you get some time, I invite you to please Check them out. I've had one for a few years and it's garbage I think. I'd rather baton my knife threw logs than put the effort on swinging the hatchet. It does a terrible job for the energy needed

Yeah. Thats top gear. My grandpa always packed a Mora knife and an modified Estwing when we were out in the sticks. 👍 North Sweden
