Making A Custom Tooled Leather Sheath For An Estwing Sportsman’s Axe - Leather Craft

  • In this leather craft video, I replace the generic sheath that came with my Estwing Sportsman’s Axe with a new custom tooled leather sheath. The sheath is intricately tooled all around and features a steel belt clip on the backside that allows the sheath to be taken on and off without belt removal. I tried to match the color scheme of the axe handle by applying a combination of walnut and chocolate color dyes and by stitching the sheath together using white Tiger thread. I hope you enjoy this axe sheath making video and can pick up a few tips and techniques for creating your own.

I'm just starting out, and I mean *just*. Wanting to make a sheath as my first project because I do competitive axe throwing. I have quite a few axes with either no actual sheath or a very generic cover. I want to make something nice and custom, and I truly appreciate this video. One thing I noticed when I did start cutting is the end of the leather, the edge. Seeing you use a rotary tool to lightly sand down the edge to start is simple genuis. Thank you very much for that little tip.
