  • A wild Chad appears to discuss why skepticism is bad, how atheism and skepticism are the same thing, how prioritizing wellbeing is morally corrupt, how it’s destroying traditional family values, and how we are mocking America. This is possibly the angriest and most excitable troll we’ve had in a while, but he hangs up when he can’t take the heat.

      None of his shtick was true. He's a troll, it's what they do. They create a dangling carrot for us to bite on where we end up making claims that we know what the "butthurt Christian" was doing and why. But since it's all a façade, they feel gratified and powerful because they were "smart" enough to trick us into believing the lie. We've all done this at some point, to some degree, because we've felt powerless and resentful. Except most of us grow out of it and become properly socialized adults. Trolls take it to an exceptionally creepy level because anonymity makes them feel safe, which means they won't face the same social consequences than if they did it in person to people that know who they are.

      I'm a citizen of Soviet Canuckistan...but I appreciate the symbiotic relationship we enjoy with our neighbours. Whenever I see someone in uniform up here (soldier, paramedic, cop, fireman....) I always say, "Thanks for keeping us safe." The only vested interest I have in their job is the sense of security I get to enjoy because *they* maintain it for me (I have no family in any of those types of roles with the exception of a former stepfather who used to be an ER doc). Furthermore, I stood, and remain, absolutely against the invasion of Iraq...but I suspect it wasn't you who gave the order to invade. I'm not sure if that makes me more or less grateful than someone with a family connection/loss due to their service/sacrifice. Either way, my gratitude is 100% sincere.

      It’s not skepticism to be presented with irrefutable proof for a proposition and remain unconvinced… that’s called denial and/or self deception. The caller was right about one thing: you cannot be a theist and also be a skeptic. You can be a theist and *call yourself* a skeptic, but true skepticism follows reasonably conclusive evidence and in the absence of that for any claim, a skeptic will withhold belief. The core tenet of most religion, meanwhile, is belief in the absence of evidence… so skepticism and religious belief are quite clearly mutually exclusive.

    It's really not that hard, Chad/Brian. You can believe in a soul that exist after we die without believing in any deity. That the reason many are lost after death is precisely because there's no god. (I don't believe in a soul, for the record). Or atheist who believe we've been visited by alien life when the best evidence is always a pic of a dot. So it isn't always about anything supernatural or "spiritual."
    Every single time I've heard the phrase "I used to be an atheist" I think "maybe, but you were never a skeptic." Because even then they were anti-vaxxers, climate deniers or believed in countless unfounded conspiracies.
    Skepticism is simply having your beliefs match onto reality to the best of your ability. It has nothing to do with doubt. It should be anchored with a high standard of evidence and the lack of skepticism is the most dire crisis facing our species. Because how the hell can we solve any of the world's greatest problems when 40% of us don't even believe they exist?

    • @starfishsystems
      @starfishsystems Před 2 lety

      That isn't skepticism, however, it's only the position of being doubtful. Yes it's simple. No, it's not correct.
      Skepticism is a methodology, in much the same way as science is a methodology.
      The position of doubt or uncertainty is only the initial step in assessing a given claim, and it is a NECESSARY one, because otherwise we would be obliged to accept all claims at face value, which of course means that we would have to accept contradictory claims.
      The next step in skepticism is to ask the claimant to justify the claim. That is, the claimant has the burden of proof.
      The third step is to evaluate whatever was supplied as justification, in order to see whether it holds up to critical examination. If it's just another claim, then we're back at Step 1. But if a skeptic is satisfied with the justification, then he or she can at least provisionally accept the claim. The strength of the justification determines our confidence in the claim. (What constitutes justification is out of scope in foundational skepticism, but would in practice amount to some combination of formal reasoning and material evidence.)
