I Added Multiplayer to my Tavern Simulator! | Tavern Team Devlog Ep. 5

- Tavern Team is a simulation / management game that revolves around serving customers and managing your medieval tavern with your friends.
I've implemented netcode, connected with friends over steam, and a sick arm wrestling system. Now I keep saying that phrase, “with your friends” but hold up, so far all the coding I have done has been focused around single player mechanics. I think now is a good time to start implementing multiplayer as it will help me learn how I have to architect my game going forward. I also spent some time developing an armwrestling mechanic as it sat highly on the list of priorities.Im super happy with how it turned out and am excited to show you so I'll discuss in depth how this system works.

Felt this so much about the netcode comments. I still stand by my Mirror comment in your prev video. Took me 1 afternoon to get a multiplayer game going with mirror as opposed to 4~ days with netcode

Just found your stuff, this is great content! Love the concept for the game.
For the arm wrestling the first thing that came to my mind was making it almost like a typing minigame where when people press any key it comes into a chat bubble above their head. So you'll get the spam key ahagsgwuhfjajahha but a fast typer could be talking smack while they arm wrestle.
Maybe silly but something that would make it fun to break things up!

I have a idea for how you could get more ingredients. Adventurers can come in and you can hire them to explore the world for ingredients for you, obviously there is a chance adventures could die or not find anything but I think it would add a cool aspect. Maybe you could add a system of giving them new gear too which would lower the chances of them being killed out in the wild and make it easier to get higher tier ingredients.

Multiplayer's hard dude. they say it's like 10x more work! I have a bit of experience using photon 2 and that's it, it's almost all there already managed for you but still a pain. Not trying to really tackle it (specially not realtime fast-paced multiplayer) until I have a few published games, tbh. If you're willing to go through that now, good for you tho, keep up as you'll learn a lot! But expect for things to go wrong many many times xD

I think that the arm wrestling arm or character will have different types like not using the whole character but different one that need special more moving part like the whole will not have a lot of joint but the one part will have a lot and I'm not making any sense now.

I just finished your video on how you progressed in the Unity engine over 2 years. My question is, what experience did you have making games or coding PRIOR to that two year period, or did you start "fresh" with little to no experience and just dedicated yourself? Thanks in advance!
I had about 2 years of python and a small amount of Java experience when I started, so although no Unity or C# exp I knew the basic logic of coding and was able to go from there

It's worth noting that the interaction layer between C# and Steamworks isn't called "Facepunch" - Facepunch is the company behind the repository, most notably known for "Rust" and "Garry's Mod" games - Rust is developed in Unity, so they probably needed a C# layer for Steamworks, so they went fuck it and they made it public.
Yes its the company name, but facepunch is also the name of their transport

How are you liking having a vertical monitor? I watched a dev stream recently and none of the three or four guys were a fan of vertical monitors.
Depends how you like to develop, it’s all personal preference , I’ve found I work the fastest when I only use my main monitor and alt tab around. The vertical is usually just for having a document open or discord, and it prevents me from watching CZcams or twitch all day lol
