- Taylor Swift has nothing on Michael Jackson, according to Neil Tennant.
The Pet Shop Boys vocalist took a swipe at the global superstar while comparing her to the late King of Pop during a livestreamed conversation with the Guardian Monday.
“Taylor Swift sort of fascinates me as a phenomenon because she’s so popular, and I sort of quite like the whole thing, but then when I listen to the records … for a phenomenon as big [as she is], where are the famous songs? What’s Taylor Swift’s ‘Billie Jean’?” he asked onstage at Kings Place in London.

I agree, Swift's music never really got me. Neil is very brave to state his opinion. I hope people will leave him alone.
Why on earth would he need to be brave to comment on a supposed musician. The swiftologist made a video where he said he was bored of the fake moralistic outrage concerning Ariana. He was harrassed by masked security and said Taylor made eye contact with him in the front row on a previous night. He had already made video about Ariana´s early single at this point.
She does music for kids. Pet shop boys is another level of public.
Pet Shop Boys singer, Neil Tennant, is a former music journalist. He has no qualms about speaking his mind. To the point though, I don't think it's a swipe so much as a curious facet of Swift's popularity. I'm sure her fans would argue with the observation, but Pet Shop Boys can speak from a place of assurance on this point considering they have "What have I done to deserve this?" "It's a Sin," their cover of "Always on my mind," "Opportunities," and of course "West End girls."
@@astropioneer3296Those were just hits, none of them "classic."
Here's a newsflash: you're more than likely not her target demographic. Just food for thought.
He's right. She's very talented but she doesn't have a classic song.Something really huge, and this is so strange, because everything she does is a hit...
You know how classics become that way? When the people who grow up with them make them so.
None of the modern songs you think are classics were thought of that way by middle-aged people when the songs were released.
@@EF-fc4du "None of the modern songs you think are classics..."
Do you want to compare "Billy Jean" to any Taylor songs too? 🤔🤔
*Anyway, I think she's very talented.
@@cmjm123 Sure. The hook baseline of Billie Jean, which drives the entire song, was taken from I Can't Go For That. MJ admitted this to Hall and Oates directly.
Blank Space, for example, wasn't stolen from any other song.
@@EF-fc4du It's truly a masterpiece since it was finished and released.
The inspiration IS just part of It.
But I saw your point.
Let's wait...
Since 1984, Pet Shop Boys have accumulated a successful track record, with 42 top 30 singles and 22 of them reaching the top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, including four UK number ones. Among these hits are "West End Girls", which also reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, "It's a Sin", "Always on My Mind" and "Heart". They are also known for hits like "Go West" and "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)", as well as their duet with Dusty Springfield on "What Have I Done to Deserve This?". In 2009, they were recognized with the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the Brit Awards and in 2017 they received NME's Godlike Genius Award, while in 2016 they were named by Billboard as the top dance duo/group in the chart's 40 years since 1976.
"Is it though, because even I know that's the answer." 😂😂😂😂
I'm a Swiftie, and I totally agree with Neil, and I loved the Pet Shop Boys.
Billie jean is micheal's signature song, taylor maybe between shake it off or blank space
@@edmurph5344i think Neil point is that Taylor is so big/great that she should have songs bigger
@@PSBrazil01 i think taylor prove herself enough to be a superstar status, she's had already hits in different genre, love story (country), blank space, shake it off, all too well, cruel summer (pop), cardigan, willow (folk), plus the fact that shes in the line up of elton john or billy joel of being one of the biggest female songwriter/story teller artist of her generation ( shakespearian style of story telling, that is taylor's identity that seperate him from other singer songwriter, her known masterpiece of art like tim mcgraw, teardrops on guitar, lover, exile, cardigan, all too well & fortnight
LOVE NEIL... AND I LOVE MICHAEL JACKSON ❤❤❤
It's kid music.
Very obvious u do not bother to listen to any of her work besides her much older singles
@@sofia_anxiety3605Listen to Behaviour album from PSB. You Will feel the difference of pop kid and mature music. I dont see any problem with Taylor.
A clear case of the common human inability to place anything into temporal perspective.
Classic anything isn't considered so until long after it is created. 10 years after release, Billie Jean was just considered a successful pop song. Classic rock radio now plays stuff it didn't 30 years ago because it was too recent. Once, it was purely 60s and 70s.
Seriously, do some of you know how time works? You think these obsessed Swift fans are just gonna forget about her music? They will carry it forward in time, and those older than them will begin to die. Then, guess what....?
He is right.
The audience didn’t clap, the yell out hit song titles either
I agree
He is right. The truth Hurts.
They were afraid to say something for fear of swifties
What Taylor Swift doesn’t do is trash other artists.
Too busy trashing ex-boyfriends.
He's not wrong.
Still, Neil acknowledges Swift's phenomenal success, strength as a vocalist, deft lyricist and being the poet of her generation. I encourage people to watch the whole interview.
The fame thing isn’t true about her songs but generally he’s right. There’s really only been a handful of times where an artist has truly been out on their own as the clear biggest in the world at that time, which Taylor is (and fair play to her) but all of those have truly iconic anthems (I.e his Bille Jean example) that every generation listened to and will always listen to….she isn’t that
Some people in the comments agree with him. Some people insult him. Nobody can name her "Billy Jean". Because Michael Jackson was a completely different calibre. "Beat It" (the song as well as the music video) alone contains more emotional power and artistic spark and beauty than her whole career. Michael Jackson aside though: Where is her "Yesterday" or her "Strawberry Fields Forever"? Her "Stairway to Heaven"? Her "Child in Time"? Her "When Doves Cry"? I could go on. She simply is a bit dull musically, and whatever constitutes her success, it is certainly not the iconic quality of her songs. So, he is absolutely right, and he said it in a respectful manner. But obviously stating an opinion (especially as an older man) nowadays already is a sin.
She has hits. Love Story, Blank Space, etc..... But her new albums don't have any. All TV Versions and Vault Tracks of her plus the new album feels like AI. She lost the soul of her music
You can ask this for every artist right now. And the answer will be always something uncomparable to Billie Jean.
Billie Jean is a 40 year old song. It in turn doesnt compare to White Christmas.
And the song was just a rip off of I Can't Go For That.
Let the war between Swifties and Petheads begin!!! xD
We know who will win!
@@Amanda_Dapet shop boys are in the charts since 1985 😂
You know, I'm a massive music fan. I'm 63. Mostly I like 70s, 80s, 60s, 50s music in that order. A few after that but loved all the classics. I don't know any Taylor Swift songs other than "Shake it Off." I know her music is simple 2 or 3 chord stuff with some lyric or a relationship or getting into one or out of one; maybe some banal existential or experiential lyric written like a 16 year old. But really, I heard the name Taylor Swift before. I didn't know if she was an actress or singer or both. AM I WEIRD or DIFFERENT? I didn't know who she really was until maybe 3 years ago, possibly 2.
Taylor, like everyone has grown up. I urge you to check out her recent stuff, both videos and live. Then check out the list of awards and nominations. She's been in the Guiness Book 118 times. And she's only 34. The list of the money she's donated is pretty spectacular also. Am a recent Swiftie myself, wish she was MY kid! ...so does my 43 yr old daughter lol
Based and Facts
Very true
Love Me Some PET SHOP BOYS. Taylor Swift is still singing for the16 and 18 year old and her girl squad. How old is she.
Trust a pet shop boys fan to bring down a successful female artist
@@sofia_anxiety3605she has potential to make great songs in the Future. The time Will Tell.
What's going on here with Neil's voice?
Age! It still sounds incredible on the latest album.
I don't get the Swift thing either. There was a time when singers became icons because they did something fresh and original. Swift epitomizes conformist banality.
Hast du das nötig?
Jealousy
Nope. Realistic about art and legacy
I just searched him after this and realised his songs were really terrible. Seriously lifeless songs with no sense. This is my first time hearing of him and I guess it's the same for many too.
I'm in Africa and heard of Taylor when she was writing songs for hannah Montana way back. She is known all over because of her creative mind and relatable songs cos she sings about life.
She is even getting bigger than Micheal Jackson. People won't admit this but it's the truth.
You got this comment wrong.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They have 84 terrible songs famous around the world 😂 and they are the most famous duo of ALL times 😂😂
I am sure you didnt Listen to Go West, always on my mind, West end girls, dominó Dancing and being boring 😂
TS' songs are for teenagers. PSB have written more serious songs, more satire, irony, on political and social issues.
@@PSBrazil01 just terrible songs. Check out the number of outstanding songs put out there by Taylor swift.
Her fan base love her cos that's the kind of songs we love.
Keep enjoying these terrible songs from your man but ask him to respect Taylor cos he is no where near her status musically.
Old man
Dear Mr. Tennant,
With all due respect, Sir, trying to get your name in the news by taking cheap swipes at an infinitely younger and infinitely more successful talent like Swift is frankly beneath you and only makes 70-year-olds such as yourself look more than a tad catty, not to mention 'thirsty' for attention.
Now, don't get me wrong, I used to love the PSB way way way back in the day, but you need to take notice of the fact that MUSIC HAS MOVED ON since then.
After all, there are several generations of folks who could not name a single song PSB ever performed, yet surely that does not mean that your music was not extremely popular at one time, does it, Sir? No, of course it doesn't. It just means YOU HAVE GOTTEN OLD. Please try to keep up and stop showing your age! You're making folks of a certain age look like thirsty trolls.
Respectfully,
One of the many billions of music listeners who recognize why Taylor Swift's talent and audience identification are driving the Billboard Music Bus these days. Thank you!😘😘
i noticed you said talent, not musical talent, and then focussed on audience identification.
She does music for kids. Pet shop boys is another level of public.
Pretty rich from a guy who’s only hit is just him saying “Absolutely Fabulous” over and over again while sound clips from the TV show “Absolutely Fabulous” play.
That comment says more about you than it does about Neil Tennant. Only hit ??? You know it isn't .... But you would rather appear moronic than factful
You forgot the other 84 big hits around the world and about they are the most famous duo of ALL times 😂

You Brits need to realize you're a small pond. PSB were a very minor act in the much more significant US market.
@@MrDen-lv5ujPet Shop Boys lasted about 2 years on the US charts. What they did elsewhere is irrelevant. The US market is where the big boys and girls are made and they were an obvious flash in the pan.

Taylor , no so much.
Coming from someone who's songs are mediocre and are nothing like Billie Jean !!!
She does music for kids. Pet shop boys is another level of public.
He never said he was a phenomenon did he, he’s comparing them, he is saying she is one like Michael Jackson was…in terms of being truly the biggest artist in the world at a certain point but she’s got there without making big commercial hits that will be played forever. Her big commercial hits are from a decade or so ago and we already know they aren’t anything like a Billie Jean, or huge Beatles songs, Madonna songs, Whitney Houston songs etc. That’s his point, and he’s right
@@RedDevil_Joe Btw a very well explained comment this.

West End Girls changed music in the 80's and was a milestone. So was It's A Sin. Pet Shop Boys left a mark in music history. You're just salty.
PLEEEESE old white guys-- this kind of comment is only aimed at a young woman whose fans are mostly women - albeit many boys and men love her too. But he can't stand it that she has a bigger catalog with more hits than he does and did. I was a fan in the day, but can I list more than one hit? West End Girl. Let the mic drop and get off the stage- take a hint from the crickets in the audience.
