'Nonetheless' is such a fresh, clean, euphoric, ethereal, and uplifting album. It was so perfect for a spring release. "Loneliness" and "Feel" are such earworms I find myself singing the choruses all day long. "New London Boy" is a fantastic throwback and I adore Neil's rapping. On side B (which I agree is weaker than A) I found such beauty in "The Secret of Happiness" and "Love is the Law". While generally I prefer the more bombastic, dancey stuff, I find a fantastic cohesion and wonderful craftsmanship in the structure of this new album and the orchestral arrangements are a beautiful touch. 'Hotspot' was very disjointed for me, while I enjoyed most of the tracks, they didn't really gel together to create a cohesive mood. While not every track on 'Nonetheless' is a winner, I did find something interesting within every track, whether lyrically or musically and nothing is skippable. And yes, there has never been a bad PSB album. But my overall favorite albums are 'Introspective', 'Bilingual' (their most underrated IMO), 'Fundamental' and 'Yes'. Again, I generally love the more overtly pop, dance stuff over the moodier, chill vibes. However I think this album is much more successful than some of their previous mellow albums ('Release' (though I am a bit of a defender of this album, because it came out during a memorable time in my life and I was already a fan of dreamy Britpop stuff), 'Elysium' (I mean most fans agree this is their worst), etc.). I'm not sure where I would rank it in the overall catalogue, but it is a very solid B+, pleasant listen and it's amazing to think they created it during lockdown while separate from each other (Chris didn't even realize they were working on an album). And that's what's so great about PSB, their love of their art and constant desire to create.

I give it to Amazon marketing for the calling it "Milky Clear" as opposed to "Semen Clear"... This is the one I got on release day while I waited for my 200 formats I preordered from their site. It's been on heavy rotation since. Truly a beautiful and emotional record to listen to. I can't figure out what makes me tear up for some of these songs. I think the gorgeous lyrics and melodies paired with the subtle but beautiful orchestral arrangements may be it.

I agree, 'Yes' for me is their modern era standard for each successive album to live up to, and while 'Nonetheless' doesn't top it, it is for me their most cohesive, well-crafted, sequenced and intriguing album since 'Yes'. While I know many would argue 'Electric' is better, I think 'Nonetheless' is more poignant, introspective, and fully realized, and the singles (don't know why "Feel" wasn't chosen as one) are superior and stay in my head all day.

I consider "New London Boy" the best track of the Album. I agree with your comments about the album feeling and the tracks. Not a high NRG album. I listened to it 2 or 3 times and since this album was pre-recorded during the pandemic, it seems like very basic sound design with orchestral arrangements to fill the gap. Album picture wanted to repeat some of the "Actually" look (wich I like, excellent snap), but I think this album will never match the spectacular music in "Actually". I also listened to the Furthermore mixes of "Heart", "Always on my mind", "Being Boring" and "It's a sin" and it was kind of disappointment of how the remixes sound, because it lacks of refreshment because the sound design is simply easy to achieve. We are in the age of infinite sound resources to make experiments. This Album is kind of basic songs wanna-be more interesting, but I truly believe the PSB sound is located at NLB Track, because it reminds me some nostalgia, sound design, an interesting socio-political view and there's some saxo arrangements and melodies that I like in the way I like to listen to West End Girls. For me that's the real secret about this guys and also they used to invent new electronic sounds and make a huge difference in other bands. Age is not a problem, problem is when you are not inspired to make a huge difference between what you did and what you are doing now. I'am straight btw, but it doesn't make any sense to me to note that. PSB is not only gay music, but in Tennants words this is the more queer album they've done.

I agree with your take on the new versions of "Heart" and the other classics, I felt a bit underwhelmed with them, but it's cool to hear some fresh takes. I have no doubt PSB will bounce back with the next album, but "Nonetheless" is lacking something.

Sorry to break it to you - but it means you’re a closet gay if you listen to the Pet Shop Boys! No, seriously - I’m only joking! But believe it or not that’s precisely the kind of statement I was hit with when I used to listen and celebrate the PSB’s in the 80’s and early 90’s. I think, in part, because I grew up in the Blackcountry, a working class area north of Birmingham, UK, and most of my mates back then were metal heads listening to thrash metal, such as Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth.
I was a victim of circumstance. But for me, that’s the appeal with them - they are openly gay at times but equally their lyrics and music pull me in as a straight man and my ex girlfriend adored them too. They have such an eclectic and wide ranging fan base because I think their music is wide ranging, intelligent, funny, sad, etc. to not like the PSB’s is to not be human IMHO. Or certainly VERY narrow minded with a limited mental scope.
As for the spunk vinyl - that’s reminiscent of what Coil would do. I always saw Coil as the mirror image opposites to PSB. Like Coil is the night and PSB’s the day. They are genetically linked in some ways but Coil is the evil, twisted, bullying big brother to them. That’s how I see it.
PS. I was listening to the first Electronic album the other day, which features Neil Tennant on a couple of tracks - I’m sure you’re familiar with that album. It’s very early 90’s and absolutely great.

Ha! That is definitely part of the magic of the Pet Shop Boys -- they obviously are openly gay, but who cares? Their music is so damn good that any straight person would be a fool to ignore them. I went and saw them live on the "Electric" tour with a buddy of mine (a guy) and we ran into an old DJ buddy of mine who was there with his wife. He kinda looked us over for a second and I was convinced he was thinking to himself "Is he gay? I mean, he's at a PSB show with another dude...." 😆 But that's the cool thing about a PSB show -- there are all ages and preferences there. I saw kids with their parents dancing in the aisles and old gay dudes holding hands and super hot straight women gyrating to the grooves...it's a super fun experience for everyone. And yes, I love that first Electronic album, it's one of my favorites!

I loved their 'Lost' EP, such a haunting sound to the tracks, especially "The Lost Room" and "I Will Fall". I'd love them to explore more of that kind of sound in the future. And yes "Feel" is a real standout on 'Nonetheless' and it's beyond me why they aren't choosing it for the 3rd single. Overall it's a pleasant B+ album with a few excellent tracks ('Feel', 'New London Boy' and 'Loneliness' are ace), some filler and a few tracks in need of editing. As much as I enjoyed "The Secret of Happiness" it did not need to be 5 and a half minutes long. And "Why Am I Dancing" was just a rehash of "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing" but not as good. I also really dislike "Dancing Star", too on the nose and a little cheesy for my taste. But overall I think the album works cohesively, sets a chill mode and I've already listened to it more than 'Hotspot' and 'Super'.

I absolutely hate this album lol. I seriously give it 0/10 I think it's so thumpingly atrocious. I enjoyed the first listen but on the second the veneer was stripped away and all I could hear was very cheap gimmickry such as the multiple key changes in a short space in both Feel and A New Bohemia. Was similar with Loneliness and Dancing Star when they were released. I think those songs are ok, good but not that exciting, Loneliness seems to have attained a perfect balance of averageness and Dancing Star seems very thin on substance. I find it infuriatingly catchy as well, another sign of songwriting gimmickry as I do Feel which has a nice chorus despite the dreadful trick of multiple key changes in quick succession. Even the digital bonus tracks from the singles I like are maddeningly catchy. I think the use of strings in a very 70's way akin to disco strings used at the time sounds dreadfully hokey too. I don't think this album will grow on me. The fact that I can't go back to it because those maddening songs will get stuck in my head speaks for itself. I say this as someone who has absolutely loved nearly everything PSB have done and the last 6 studio albums have been hugely complimentary to my life and have gotten a great deal of enjoyment out of them.

@@occasionalfeelgood23 interesting, to my ear it's vastly different, I assume from what you said in the video you'd agree it's very different from the past three Stuart Price albums, all of which I loved and think are objectively great albums also. Even Elysium I see only a superficial similarity. That stripped down production as Neil referred to it in an pre-album release interview with the early 80's electro NY sound in some cases that pre-dates PSB's record career by a couple of years and yeah the songwriting, I think it's howlingly dreadful lol which is a new experience as a PSB listener and comes as a bit of a shock actually. I think Neil is a very bad lyricist sometimes also btw and his worst is amply on display here. For e.g. in Red Letter Day on Bilingual ,"you can't sneer or disappear behind a veneer of self control". Actually there's a worse example but I can't think of it right now with about five rhymes in one line - it's like poetry written by a 5 year old lol.
