LORE - AMNESIA Lore in a Minute! (SPOILERS!)
Our hero, Daniel, despite his intense fear of the dark, goes on an archaeological expedition to Algeria where he uncovers an ancient tomb. The tomb entrance collapses on Daniel, forcing him to venture deeper before coming upon a mysterious Orb. Rescued hours later, he returned to England where he sought out information on the Orb. Daniel learns that the expedition team he left behind disappeared and everybody he's come in contact with regarding the orb has turned up dead.
Daniel then receives a letter from Baron Alexander of Brennenburg, offering to protect him within the confines of his castle. Fearing for his life and desperately seeking answers for the connection between the Orb and the deaths, he travels to Castle Brennenburg. There, it becomes clear that an unknown force, known as The Shadow, has been murdering those around Daniel and has followed him to the castle. To keep The Shadow away and buy time for his banishing ritual, Alexander insisted that the two must extract Vitae from prisoners, a substance that is secreted in the blood during times of stress.
Daniel took part in these gruesome tortures and fed prisoners Amnesia potions so they could be tortured repeatedly until they were all dead. Alexander then kidnapped a family, killing the father and imprisoning the mother and her daughter. The daughter managed to escape but Daniel tracked her down and murdered her. In his remorse, Daniel realized that the baron had been murdering innocents all along in order to obtain the Orb's power for himself. Unable to come to grips with what he had done, Daniel consumed an Amnesia Drink and left himself one final note: Find Alexander and murder him.
Have fun!

Daniel took the amnesia potion to forget about all the torture and killings he committed. He didn't want to remember the horrible things he did, but knew he wanted to kill Alexander, So he wrote it down in a note at the beginning of the game.
He took the potion to forget his fear not his murders. "If only I could wipe my fear away as we did with them." -Daniel
Amnesia is one of those games that once you complete them you get that feeling of just wow
I wish I could play these games without crapping my pants at the first unknown sound..
Dark Descent is the game where I felt the most palpable dread of any game Ive ever played. Im not counting Outlast because I was too weak to finish that game haha. I ended up watching a playthrough of the rest 😅
@@SSMLivingPictures I can't even get past the first wolf in Penumbra. I love survival horrors but I can't survive them myself, even before youtube I had to watch other people play them.
@@YouAreStillNotablaze I hear that. And its funny, the ones Ive completed are amoung my fav games ( Amnesia DD, Soma, Alien Isolation), but I get SO SO into them Im a nervous wreck while and after playing hahaha
@@SSMLivingPictures I played amnesia for the first time 10 years ago , since that time its still my favorite game ever , im very obsessed with game bcz at that time, my life was so good all fun and happy . Good old days
''an unknown force, known as the shadow"... Though it was unknown, ah whatever.
Illuminati?
chiller miller Half Life 3 confirmed.
TPMine
Portal 3 confirmed. *P O R T A L 3*
yeah i think it should have been something like "''an unknown force, only known as the shadow" so it would be an unknown force thats just called "the shadow"
theblackbull55 they actually did explicitly refer to it as the shadow, in fact there was almost never a time that it was referred to as an unknown force cause by the time Daniel starts remembering/learning about his time prior to brennenburg he's already well aware of it and has even had a terrifying chase. in fact in the first note Daniel leaves for himself he says he's being chased by a shadow
The monsters were Alexanders servants. During the game, it mentions that Alexander was followed by servants in cloaks that smelled strange. Alexander was slowly mutilating the servants into monsters before Daniel used the potion.
"an unknown force, known as the shadow"...
unknown .... known as ...
ok.
this means they don't know what it does, or the name, but it's called the shadow, by the people
Reaper AOD sherlock
Yeah, maybe the better word should've been mysterious.
I figure it was getting trapped in the tomb that caused his fear of the dark.
Cynical Cthulhu it was actually that Daniel had a bad childhood said in other none mentioned lore,
Think you're right.
So, I saw Harry Mason, James Sunderland, and Henry Townsend all appear as "prisoners" in this one. Nice.
Spot on
@KA- BOOM!!! silent hill protagonists, from 1,2 and 4 to be specific.
Good eye!
How I didn't notice this? 😆
In amnesia I'm the asshole who has twenty sanity potions and no sanity
xDDDDD
I always like *just get to thirty potions and ill be good to go*Then gets owned by the monster
Always use it when you have one Potion ^^
now what i do is use one potion only when im just on the last bit of my sanity
Thats right. :)
The amnesia potion was intended to keep the shadow away. The shadow was tracking down people with connections to the orb, but by playing the game you realise Daniel's plan to lose connections to the orb by having amnesia didn't work very well.
I know everyone kinda already replied to you but xD They all seemed to forget the most important thing: Daniel was being chased by something called 'The Shadow', which fed on his negative emotions and made it easier to find him. He used the Amnesia Potion to forget all the wrong he's done so that the Shadow would delay finding him, as it would be unable to detect him. That's why by the end of the game when Daniel remembers everything, the Shadow is usually not far behind you.
8 years later but bro wtf are you talking about? Why are people like this always making up their own lore then shoving it in everyone's face like the game said it's the case?
Nothing in the game supports this. Stop making stuff up
@@littlemoth4956 Wow. Totally forgot about this ancient comment of mine. Haha. Well, as you said, this comment is 8 years old, when I was still a young teenager and misunderstood a lot of the text in-game. The Shadow chased Daniel because he came into contact with the Orb, which it was the guardian of. And the Amnesia potion was used so that Daniel wouldn't remember all the torture he inflicted on people.
Keep in mind when reading a comment that is nearly a decade old, that they may no longer be the same person. They may learn from mistakes or misconceptions they once had. It's why responding to comments that are several years old for the sake of expressing frustration is...mostly pointless? Depends on context, really.
Anyway, thanks for reminding me that this channel existed! I remember these guys. They were fun to watch - liked their animations. Happy to see my younger self here, even if their understanding of the lore was extremely poor, lmao
@@Videogamefangirl this interaction is so funny lmao
@@Videogamefangirl Kudos to you, my friend!
@@littlemoth4956 I can’t believe you gave an argumentative reply to a comment written almost a decade ago and STILL got ratio’d 😭
Puddleboatprouctions Doesn't seem like anyone got back to you. ANYWAY. When he was killing people originally; not only were they adults, but he also trusted what Alexander had told him about them. (He and Alexander had become fast friends) And then, as the Shadow got closer and closer... and closer... he started to become desperate. He'd already shown signs of not caring about the people he was killing
"Being around these degenerates makes me ill. None of them even tries to face their punishment with any kind of dignity. They taunt me with their lies of innocence and their cowardly pleas of mercy. What can make a man fall so far from the grace of a civilized existence. They are all wicked men and I remind myself of it constantly. Still, I am thankful for God sending these monsters our way, as they will serve as the instruments of my salvation."
But as you go further into his past, and reach the 'paint the man, cut the lines' moment, and what he says afterwards, you realize JUST how desperate he was getting.
"The blood wards are failing. The shadow beckons and its cry disarms my actions. Hurry, no time to spare. You have to kill another. Alexander produces a knife. He wants me to cut the flesh. Do it, save yourself. He is a murderer, Daniel. He is evil - a cold blooded killer. Hurry.
“Alexander, you must let me be. I have to concentrate.” Paint the man, cut the lines, cut the flesh, watch the blood spill - let it come.
“Please, I didn’t do anything.” Paint the man, cut the lines. Paint the man, cut the lines! “Please!” the man cries. Hush, hush - now you sleep.
I did well! One life for another. You hear me, Guardian of the Orb? I did all this for you! Now, once more, withdraw your shadow from my domain!
Alexander, there isn’t much time. I can feel it. We must act swiftly. I will do whatever it takes."
And then he goes with Alexander, as pointed out in the video, and basically picks up a family to use in the ritual. Zimmerman a Dairy Farmer, and his family.
"Tonight, we will unlock the power of the Orb and ultimately banish the shadow hunting me. I feel it closing in on me and I fear for my life more than ever.
Just outside Altsdadt lies a small settlement where Zimmerman, a dairy farmer, lives with his wife and three children. We took the coach and went there. Our visit was unexpected and Alexander was able to strike Herr Zimmerman down without alerting the others. As he went to take care of the farm hands, I began to look for the children.
We should have more than enough prisoners to finish the ritual now."
Anyway, the mother and the girl end up digging a hole through the floor of their prison cell, but it's only big enough for the girl to climb through. Daniel beats the mother to death while asking where the girl went off to, and then proceeds to chase the girl down throughout the castle. (when you play the game, you can hear her yelling to get away from her, that she's going to get Gabriel the rider, etcetc) Daniel finally catches up to her, I believe, in the storage area (near the guest room and the elevator and machine room). And he stabs her to death. But then he realizes just what he's done. And what he's been doing in his desperation.
"I cannot believe what I have become. One of the girls escaped and I chased after her all the way upstairs. I hunted her down and...
What is a life worth? How many lives can I take before I surrender my own? Sure, I would kill a murderer to save an innocent. But to kill an innocent to save myself - a cold blooded murderer!"
So, you see, he perceived himself as 'doing the right thing' up to this point. And thus killing stopped bothering him over much. It wasn't such a trauma or shock to his system. And thus why he didn't drink the amnesia potion himself until after he killed the girl.
As for why he'd so easily fall into something like that, desperation aside. Through loading screen text, it's pretty much implied that Daniel was abused by his father, and a bully at school. And abuse can lead to people becoming... unhealthily violent later in life, if they don't have a healthy outlet, or what have you. BUT, also, it is also implied that this isn't the first time he's been coaxed into doing something violent. As one of the loading screen texts talk about him hitting a boy (likely the bully) with a rock, as a group of students urged him on to do it. He mentally questioned it at first, but still carried through.
8U And this is too long. So I'm certain you will get bored much further up there. lol I apologize.
TLDR
Jk, I read it. Thanks fam.
Same here read it too
Thnx actually, the plot is interesting. Nice that u noticed every little detail of the story and put it together neatly like that
@@tacomeatloafski1844 I still don't understand. Is Daniel the killer? Is Daniel Alexander? Sorry not americano
And what about Agrippa? Sorry, just finished it
soooo what are those monster things......dead torturees?
They are Prussian soldiers from a resistance that wandered into the woods to flee battle and Alexander let them stay with him but he betrayed them and turned them into the Gatherers.
Malachite Margison I Call Them Bros :P
Malachite Margison
PEEEEEEEEEWDIEPIEEEEEEE
Malachite Margison

chandlerGameFreak753 f*cking seriously?
The monsters Have a fairly complicated lore difficult to fit into this short video. Grunts: the soldiers Alexander trapped in the wine celler and who drank the poisened wine which mutated them. Brutes: Victims of the shadow brought back by Alexander (heads split down the middle is a slight give away). Kaernk: A creature from the world Alexander is trying to get back to. Given to Alexander by Weyer and trapped in wells before the shadow releaces them. Hope this helps the people wondering. :)
The thing that confuses me is how the kaernk looks like a dolphin but mutilated.
Also thx
What about the one monster with the wheel around it's neck
I love how these lore episodes ACTUALLY help me understand the backstory of these games
This is an even shorter version of Amnesia lore. You don't remember much, you're in a dark mansion, alone and there's monsters everywhere. Have fun!
Regarding the monsters: There is a note in the game that tells of their origin. Basically they are soldiers who abandoned their posts and got lost in the woods and cursed in some way, it's really vague and cryptic. There is also a scene in the wine cellar where you can hear people who have drunk some poisoned wine "transforming" due to the wine. So either if they are soldiers, been poisoned or both, they are now Alexanders' servants... for some reason.. Hope this helps.
Watch this in 0.5 speed
H...a...v...e f...uuuuuuuuu..n
XD
Still dosen't explain the monsters wich is all i needed to know
The monsters are people alexander experimented on
no.. what? they are people that deserted their stations and got lost in the woods, during the "Thirty Year War" presumably near Castle Brennenburg... the note that you find in his study, explains this.
The monster is the eternal guardian of the orb.
kash smith no there not. Alexander is just controlling them by the orb..
elier meraz Well that's what I heard during the game. But I only went through it once.
all i know about this game is this: barrels stalk you
NO.
Look when this was posted. Besides, never was one to care about these types of games.
+Giegue I don't get it
and stools
Georgio Jabroni welcome to the internet then son!
Those were the days. Just finished the dark descent again. What a great game.
stalker lore!
If you play the game, you'll notice that as you go along the notes and memories scattered display Daniel as if he's completely losing it. He did this as an act of desperation, finaly being crushed by his own feelings of guilt he could not bear to remember the screams and horrors that haunt him. Taking the potion would stop his insanity from consuming him.
0:59 is that Cysero from AQW?
LOL well crazy outbursts and crazy things are usually his specialty.
now this with rebirth
Wow i'm actually impressed by this lore, it was pretty spot onto the actual story unlike some other lore episodes
Alexander stole Daniel's orb and the only way to enter the Inner Sanctum is with an orb. Only after reading the pages of his diary and meeting Agrippa, Daniel found out there was another orb, broken in six pieces, scattered across the torture chambers. That's how he gets in, he fixes Agrippa's orb and uses that to enter the Inner Sanctum :)
Hey it's my own comment from 10 year ago
What are the Silent Hill protagonists doing here ? O_o
Poor Harry, he didn't deserve that, James on the other hand
DO AMNESIA A MACHINE FOR PIGS AND PENUMBRA SERIES LORE PLEASE!!
Can you do Amnesia Justine next please
The jovial way in which she describes the sinister nature is the plot sends a shiver down dez nutz
It says something about amnesia that even just this video giving a quick overview of the lore carries emotional weight and gravitas.
Penumbra Lore, please ! ;-)
Have fun! :D
+Radical Rabbit hold up........................... oh my cat face im in the episode
Alexander had an original group of hunters he'd use to gather people for the torturings. Alexander realized he didn't need them anymore so he used a gas on them that horribly altered them turning them into monsters.
The Shadow is considered the embodiment of the Universe, and it is trying to retrieve the orb to balance itself. In some of the endings, Daniel can get trapped inside the Shadow; eternal darkness.
On every other intro I was expecting some kind of jump scare. literally as SOON as I decide there wont be one..... UGH
Whats with the forks and sporks?
I loved the way she says "have fun"
Thank you! I didnt put two and two together for that and was wondering if he was just imagining the monsters.
wait can't he kill the human torturing psychopath without drinking he amnesia potion
He wanted to forget about the things he did while assisting the psychopath
So basically he is like oh shit this fucked up screw this in out
Couldn't he have killed Alexander when he knew the way to the Inner Sanctum etc and then wipe his memory, because he ends up remembering everything by the end of the game anyway.
True, but from an addled, desperate perspective, it would make sense that he would want to forget what he did as quickly as possible, and hope that the reminder to kill Alexander would be enough.
Reg Fife were you typing too fast 😂
do scp containment breach lore
Timesplitter lore in a minute!!! PLEASE I BEG OF YOU!
It seems like there's a lot of confusion about why he drank the amnesia drink before he went after Alexander. In Amnesia, the shadow that follows the hero Daniel is largely drawn to him because of his experiences with the paranormal and his deteriorating mental state. When Daniel drank the potion, his sanity returned, and he also momentarily severed his connection to the darkness. If he hadn't consumed the draught then and there, the shadow would have consumed him instead.
*face pops up* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH FUCK LORE!!!
umm... whats the giant mouthed murder thing of death the lore says nothing about that
Fear can drive men to do things they would never otherwise consider.
In Daniel's case, he was pushed to the brink of his sanity and in fear of his life; while certainly not an excuse, it would explain why he was so blindly complicit to Alexander's methods.
When he murdered the girl, the cries of a child likely dredged up memories of his own sister, Hazel, and it absolutely made him realize what he did.
His hope with drinking the elixir was to erase his fear.
But his body remembered.
He wants to forget, because he is so ridden with guilt. So when he comes to again, he doesn't remember Alexander, but over time pieces things together again as he ventures deeper and then goes to kill Alex.
Speed 0.75 = normal voice
This like really takes away the interest in why Daniel wanted to lose his memories. Knowing it beforehand kills the atmosphere.
What you expect from a LORE
video? To not tell you the story?
"(SPOILERS!)"
Also, once you get into the Wine Cellar (an early game area) it's hinted at, if not directly stated, that everyone working with Alexander killed innocent people, and only goes on to be less and less discreet about it with Daniel literally having flashbacks in the Storage and Prisons about him killing people.
The point is you slowly learn about everything then accomplish your goal and get out. Starting in the middle and learning about the beginning during the journey to the end, when it's not a confusing one, makes a good story.
When the grunt popped up in the beginning it scared the living shit outta me
The Orb's shadow turned Alexander's servants into monsters, to hunt Daniel.
ye olde google :'D
wow, so much was glossed over, or just outright skipped... so much for spoilers. You really only covered the story and not the lore.
Wow! Awesome story!
so Daniel is not seeing these things and hes running and hiding and doing puzzles like a madman
Aaaaahh! I was not prepared for a monster to pop up after the title!
I am so excited for the second Amnesia game!
Now would be a good time to have lore for Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Love all the SH characters :D
Daniel was dealing with a ton of guilt. The potion was like alcohol, but 100x more effective
The advert that popped up at 0:10 had the words "Jaw Dropping Deals".
Now it makes waaay more sense.
MANY THANKS DOCTOR
This is genious! Thank you
I'm fairly sure The Shadow's the thing making the Kaernk appear throughout the game.
It certainly plays with your mind. Having played it since the day it came out, I still barely understand it. That's what I love about this game.
The ding part scared the poop outta me!
Harry and James are here getting tortured but Henry looks like he's having a good time O.O
FINALLY THE AMNESIA LORE!
The first 10 seconds is title. And the last 16 seconds is something else
Daniel didn't want to feel the guilt after finding out about how he killed tons of innocent people for Alexander's own gain instead of his. He also wanted a new, clean, start because of it.
Besides, it made putting pieces of the story more fun.
thank you! i never understood this lore!
It's all so clear now
Alexander realised Daniel was going mad, and locked him out of the Inner Sanctum.
Wow, Daniel's reaction at seeing the Grunt is almost scarier than the Grunt. :S
in a matter of fact, he does
once alexander finally gathered enough vitae, he just left daniel alone to fight the shadow himself, he was so mad, he yelled at alexander saying he would kill him
either that, or alexander read the diary entry that said daniel would kill him
0:39 An Imp from Dragon Quest. Nice touch!
they are supposedly the servants of alexander. which is why the grunts' full names are servant grunts, how he acquired them is unknown to most fans etc.
Expediction. Great job.
The BRO at the start scared me !
The amnesia potion reminds me of something from a game
that intro always spooks me...
Basically:
The Grunts (the main baddies) are soldiers from a war that defected and took refuge in the woods around Brennenburg whom Alexander enticed into his castle and poisoned with wine. They somehow later transformed into grunts, possibly by alchemical means.
The Brute's origin is uncertain, but it is speculated that it is another defected soldier whom Alexander poisoned and transformed, but the monster rebelled, killing Grunts.
The Kaernk (water monster) is from Alexander's homeworld.
He wanted to redeem the horrible acts by stopping Alexander and he was in shock from murdering a child to think straight. He figured (impaired as he was) forgetting his crimes would make it easier to get the job done.
Amnesia: Justine lore! That would be awesome!!
If there was such a potion, I'd use it to repeatedly rediscover the joys of cheesecake.
Those are Alexander's guardians, they patrol the hallways of Brennenburg in search of Daniel. Though the creation of the monsters is never fully explained, it is hinted at slightly in the wine cellar where Alexander poisons the wine and one of the man exclaims that his chest was about to burst, which explains the grotesque appearance of the monsters.
Honestly I don't recall Daniel murdering the daughter. In the prison area (before the kitchen), I thought he chased her to the tunnel that was locked and sealed it behind her, the girl saying she'd tell some huntsman about what they're doing and he muttering "I very much doubt that.", probably thinking the shadow would get her.
MouseDenton I like your theory with Daniel actually helping the girl. But sadly he did murder her. That's *the reason* he drank the amnesia potion, he had realized he killed an innocent girl. It happened in the storage, you can find her blue floral dress on the floor somewhere by the end. And flashbacks of her talking to Daniel and being stabbed by him.
shall i'll bring up the fact you summoned invisible monsters and those things made from the humans that drank you spiked wine?
Very helpful :)
The monsters are the castle's residents and workers that were killed and made it monsters to keep Daniel away from Alexander.
I was expecting a discussion of the Shadow and Alexander and the Orb, not just an overview of the plot.
Amnesia would have been a lot shorter if Daniel could have waited to forget one day longer.
Very poetic. And I have to admit that I didn't know about her sister, the loading screens were too brief.
And you're right. It wasn't killing the little girl that got him to snap, as he was actually calling her a "little bitch" as he was tracking her down. And it would've been just another drop of blood on his already blood-soaked hands.
Nah, it had to be like you said, how her cries were just the right kind of impulse to set him on a crash-course with Alexander, who he regarded responsible.
If you pay attention, Daniel can't come to terms with what he has done. He says hes "As broken as the men I've tortured". So, he drinks the amnesia drink so that he could have a better chance at defeating Baron Alexander.
Come to think of it, it is entirely plausible that Daniel is running around the castle naked. I mean, you never see anyone else in that castle with clothes on. That really changes the tone of the game.
There's a Legacy of the Wizard ref in there, too.
Has anyone noticed the amount of dragon quest monster refences in the LORE videos 0:41
there is also one in the dead space lore
Lets not forget that near the end of the game, he in fact does remember what he did to all those people. Logic ?
Did anyone else notice Harry Mason from Silent Hill lore is getting his vitae extracted?
