  • Join me on a walk through the quaint mountain town of Banner Elk, North Carolina!
I start in the center of town at the clock tower at the corner of Main Street and Shawneehaw Avenue, then head east to get on the Banner Elk Greenway, which takes me through Tate-Evans Park, past the Historic Banner Elk School, and over to the Banner House Museum and Mill Pond. Then I wind through the beautiful campus of Lees-McRae College, and finally wander through the Village of Banner Elk shopping area, before circling back to the clock tower.
The Banner Elk area was originally used as hunting and fishing grounds by the Cherokee People. Martin L. Banner, from a Welsh family that had settled in North Carolina, settled in the area in 1848, and his Banner family eventually grew to 55 members, coming to be known as Banner's Elk due to its proximity to the Elk River. In 1899, Presbyterian Reverend Edgar Tufts established an all-female high school in the town, which grew to become Lee-McCrae College. The town incorporated as Banner Elk in 1911. Situated between two skiing mountains and surrounded by the beauty of the Appalachians, Banner Elk was a lovely little town to visit!
