  • Grandfather Mountain rises tall above the Blue Ridge Mountains at a whopping 5,946 feet tall. The mountain is closest to the city of Linville, NC near the Blue Ridge Parkway, spanning three different counties: Avery, Caldwell, and Watauga Counties. Within Grandfather Mountain's nature preserve, many unique things exist: a subalpine climate with unique biodiversity, a mile-high swinging bridge, an animal habitat with bears, otters, and bald eagles, and extensive hiking trails that run the ridgelines of the mountain. One of the most popular trails, the Grandfather Trail, begins at the parking lot near the swinging bridge and meanders along the ridgelines to Macrae Peak and Calloway Peak. It is dotted with several ladders and cables that aid hikers in reaching the steepest and most exposed parts of the trail.

    I proposed to my wife Aug 2004 atop McRaes Peak right after it became socked in with fog. Talking about a surreal moment. She said YES and it became a very emotional journey back down in the fog. Still married to the same wonderful lady.

    I love this video. I did this trail a couple of months ago. I couldn't really enjoy the views cuz I sh*t my pants climbing the ladders - lol. Ain't gonna lie - I was scared! But my hiking buddy coaxed me through it. In retrospect (I'm real brave now that I'm back at my keyboard), it was FUN! I (sorta) can't wait to go back I think, maybe.

    Great video depicting the trail. I did this in reverse, starting from a back country campsite named Briar Patch. There had been alot of rain the week I went, so the Chute (Shown at the end here) was very slippery and terrifying to me on the way down. Up was easier. The ladders weren't difficult, because you could hang onto those easily. Luckily, the boulder scramble sections were dry, so were challenging and so long as you paid attention, was really fun (that being said, if you slipped and took a head over heels tumble, you'd go off the side of the mountain, so I'm really glad they were dry!)
    I can't wait to go back again!!!

      How was your trip? I plan on going to Grandfather Mountain for the first time but I'm not that great of a driver and afraid of heights. If I veer off can we ACTUALLY die from the height or will the trees and boulders block us?

    I've been on this trail to the top and back at least a dozen times. It isn't as hard as the video makes it out to be. I'm 66 and have met people 80+ yrs old on the trail and they've had no problems.. Go and enjoy! You'll be glad you did.

      I for one and happy to read this comment! LOL Do you have to go back down the ladders or is there a different trail to get down the mountain? And is this a day hike (looks to be, just curious about how long it takes).

      @@michelleharmon9932 u can continue past Mcrae Peak and backtrack on the Underwood Trail to avoid going down the ladders, which will get u back to the Swinging Bridge, yeah, its a day hike for sure

      I think it was in November. If you go in the winter, take some microspikes. Parts of the trail can get icy.

    • @CathyAndersonPhotography
      @CathyAndersonPhotography  Před 2 lety +1

      No worries! It’s a pretty straightforward trail with fixed ropes in the icy places. I prefer the winter because of decreased traffic, but be aware of the signs in the parking area of when you need to return. Call the park office and double check the day before so that you can get an early start that will give you enough time on the trail.
