  • Join me on a walk through picturesque Macon, Georgia!
We will start at Coleman Hill Park, facing the Ocmulgee River, and stroll through residential streets lined with pre-Civil War homes. We'll pass St. Joseph Catholic Church and take Cotton Avenue down into the city streets and the heart of downtown, ending at Cherry Street in front of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, Tubman Museum, and historic Macon Transit Authority building.
Macon, nicknamed "The Heart of Georgia" for its location in the center of the state, developed around the fall line of the Ocmulgee River, an area that has been inhabited by indigenous cultures for 13,000 years. The town grew because of its proximity to Fort Benjamin Hawkins, which the US government established as a trading post with the Native Americans. A key hub of trade pre-Civil War and the official arsenal of the Confederacy during the Civil War, it was taken by Union forces in 1865. Macon has prospered as a transportation hub in the 20th and 21st centuries, and I found it to be a lively little town.
