In Europe even if you have an iPhone, you simply use WhatsApp. It's almost rude to initiate a discussion with someone you meet for the first time using Apple messages which may or may not revert to SMS depending on the other person's device. You simply don't do it. The fact that iMessage and FaceTime are considered 'lock-in' cultural phenomena in the US is the most head-scratching thing for us.

Enjoying my s23 ultra which isn't much better than my s21 plus but you live and learn I guess. Iphone 6 was the last iPhone I owned and I loved that thing. Honestly I don't think the Mac ecosystem is having as large of an impact on people purchasing it as the iPhone ecosystem has on people purchasing those. The iPhone is pretty clearly inferior in a lot of ways to competitors, but for Macs, they've genuinely been a competitive product for power and build quality even disregarding the ecosystem. I'm a CS student, and I would've bought a MacBook for college if I could've ensured all of the required engineering/CS software would work on it (it wouldn't so I stuck with windows). But yeah, I don't think the Mac loyalty has anywhere near the ubiquity of the iPhone loyalty.

Main thing that happened is that the US market was stuck in SMS for far longer than the rest of the world, so the iPhone never saw a reason to implement a proprietary protocol until much later, by then WhatsApp, Viber and others had already grown a huge user base in multiple platforms, but in the US Apple basically led them from plain SMS to iMessage seamlessly to the point there are many that don't even realize that iMessage is something completely different under the hood to the old sms 'texting'.

Not necessarily, there are some high value, underserviced Asian markets. Japan for example, barely have any Android present, iPhone is dominating but people don't really into iMessage that much, and you don't have major brands like Samsung or Chinese to compete with either (the biggest Android leader by far is the Pixel, which shouldn't be too hard to compete.)

Here in Ecuador (probably also Latin America as a whole), WhatsApp is the go to app even if you do have an iPhone. iPhones are viewed as a “rich person’s phone” because if you were to buy a current mode one here (even sometimes a previous model) it would cost almost double what it costs in the states so having one makes it seem like you have money but that’s not always the case. I like iPhones, I have one myself, but it sounds pretty wacky to get one just because of iMessage or FaceTime when there’s WhatsApp, signal, telegram, and more to take care of those things.

Here in Brazil iPhones are also viewed as a rich person phone, but I would this mindset is slowly ending, since a lot of people even joke on iPhone users for having a iPhone (since most of them have ancient iPhones)

also it's funny hearing how iPhone users talk about android. they talk about it as if it's a company in and of itself, or they think that it's just Samsung that makes Android phones (sometimes Motorola). they're always so surprised whenever I tell them that there's literally well over a dozen different companies that make android phones (Google, OnePlus, Huawei, etc).
