    This plant is also called 'Big Thyme' and it grows easily and very quickly. It will take over the yard, if you are not careful. It gives food a delicious taste and has many health benefits.

    I bought a Cuban oregano almost ten years ago. I’ve split it several times. Cuttings root easily in water and I had big stalks of it growing in jars of plain water. I left some cuttings in a bin and they grew just with rainwater. I cook with an end leaf cluster in a sauce or braise then discard, as the leaves are pretty thick. You can’t kill this thing!

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety +6

      kilroyscarnivalfl Yessss this plant is crazy easy to propagate. I love it. We use it in almost every dish and chop it up small. My dad eats entire leaves on slices of bread with other things too. Idk how he can stomach it since the flavor is not very good to raw like that. The only thing that can kill this plant maybe is a drought or a freeze. 😏

      I’ve tried to propagate it in water twice and failed both times. first time I changed out the water fairly regularly and the second time I didn’t change out the water. It just refuses to grow roots in water alone.

    I enjoyed the video. Thank you. I am always fascinated by the way that people want you to know that what it's called in their gardening area is what it's real name is. I see many comments where people say that "it's called" and then in an authoritarian way let you know how only they know what the "real" name is. And yet, and until now, a rose by any other name will smell as sweet as "it's real name". Again, thank you for the informative video and keep them coming.

    I'm in love with my cuban oregano. A friend gifted her to me when she was just a baby a little over a year ago. I'm about to move from Florida to Alaska, and I've decided to rehome her because I would be upset if she died in Alaska or was confiscated at the Canada border, but I've decided to propogate a couple cuttings and try to take them with me. If it works, I have babies from my favorite plant. If it doesn't like Alaska (I'm confident I can keep it alive in my apartment), or if Canada makes me leave it at the border, at least I know the mother plant is in good hands.

    Have you ever seen it produce flowers or seeds? I did get a leaf with a stem to root but it rotted before it grew into a plant so I don't know if it will or not, you know how fast they grow and it really should have had enought time to grow into something if it were going to, of course I could be wrong. How did your vanilla orchid do? I looked for an update but could not find one. A couple things you that are very beneficial for you to grow are Moringa oleifera and Firebush(Hameloia patens).

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 4 lety

      No I have never seen the cuban oregano flower or produce seeds. Ideally you would have a longer piece of stem with a least 3 nodes and 2 or 3 leaves. Then you could plant that and it will root. I show a short clip of the vanilla in my video "South Florida Summer Garden || Successes and Failures" around the 15 minute mark. Thanks for the tips. The planted Cuban oregano in a pot on my lanai. Man what an easy plant to grow. I’ve cut it back twice this year and it just keeps growing so much. It feels more like it’s a succulent, how do you dry it for cooking? Do you use it fresh? I haven’t been able to find any recipes that call for it. Hello from Naples, Fl.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes it grows like crazy for me too! Very easy to grow and when the branches get long and touch the ground they root and plant spreads a bit into a large bush. The leaves are kind of succulent. We have never dried it. We just use it fresh. We don't find a need to dry cause its always growing. I just throw it in a lot of things like in a stir fry or roasted vegetable but we use it to season a soup or a pot of beans. We cook it down in the beginning in the "sofrito." Sofrito is like the base for a lot of Cuban meals. It has garlic, onions, peppers, and we throw the chopped cuban oregano in fresh. My dad loves the whole leaf in a sandwich or on some toast but my dad has a bit of a quirky taste haha.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety +1

      Hello, I have not tried growing them indoors but I think they will do well. They do not like cold weather and also really like the shade. Just make sure to keep the soil moist and maybe spray some water on the leaves every now and then to increase the humidity around the plant or you can grow it in a bathroom. I think giving the plant a bigger pot would be good so that it can grow larger and you can have more leaves to harvest. I have heard of drinking the tea before for a sore throat but never the juice. The tea doesn't have much flavor. I hope you get a healthy plant!

      It grows like a weed. Weeds just survive no matter what.
      The less artificial selection a species was under, the more it is attuned to survival.
      Soak a cutting in fresh water a few days until it sprouts and plop it into a pot on a windowsill.
      Soon enough you'll move from worrying if it'll grow to wondering if you should cut most of it.

Your best bet is to take some cuttings in the fall before the plant dies and root them in water then transplant to a pot and keep somewhere warm with some light till spring comes and you can plant it. If you plant a rooted plant in spring I think you will end up with a pretty big plant by fall.
