This plant is also called 'Big Thyme' and it grows easily and very quickly. It will take over the yard, if you are not careful. It gives food a delicious taste and has many health benefits.
What about the flowers at the top does it give off seeds. I just got a clipping of it in water thanks
I'm in north Florida, a newbie gardener and about to take cuttings of my potted cuban oregano for the first time! Thanks for the advice!
Awesome! I am glad I could help. I hope it goes well :)
I bought a Cuban oregano almost ten years ago. I’ve split it several times. Cuttings root easily in water and I had big stalks of it growing in jars of plain water. I left some cuttings in a bin and they grew just with rainwater. I cook with an end leaf cluster in a sauce or braise then discard, as the leaves are pretty thick. You can’t kill this thing!
kilroyscarnivalfl Yessss this plant is crazy easy to propagate. I love it. We use it in almost every dish and chop it up small. My dad eats entire leaves on slices of bread with other things too. Idk how he can stomach it since the flavor is not very good to raw like that. The only thing that can kill this plant maybe is a drought or a freeze. 😏
I’ve tried to propagate it in water twice and failed both times. first time I changed out the water fairly regularly and the second time I didn’t change out the water. It just refuses to grow roots in water alone.
@@Twinkyboy maybe too much fluoride in the water?
@@OurTropicalSoil I’m sorry, easy? lol I’ve been growing three clippings in water for at least a month now, and I’m just no getting roots, and that’s if I squint. Everyone says how easy it is to propogate, but I’m honestly so nervous about trying again, and wasting it. I will try growing it in soil again, but that just rotted on me.
What about the flowers at the top does it give off seeds. I just got a clipping of it in water thanks
I've grown Cuban Oregano for 2 years ( indoors northern climate ) from a cutting, then propagated a few times. Was looking for other options besides just water rooting. Loved you explanations.
I just discovered Cuban oregano after all this time. Thanks to my auntie in Florida. Great video by the way.
Very nice video. Thank you. My neighbor gave me a sprig of Cuban oregano yesterday. She could not explain exactly what it was. She told me to put it in water and it's already making a little root. I did some research today and came across your video. I have never heard of Cuban oregano before, but I am eager to grow it and find out more.
That is awesome :) It's a good herb for flavoring beans and soups. You can learn more detail about cuban oregano in the plant profile I did about it. This is the link. ourtropicalsoil.com/2018/07/18/cuban-oregano/
@@OurTropicalSoil Thank you!
I enjoyed the video. Thank you. I am always fascinated by the way that people want you to know that what it's called in their gardening area is what it's real name is. I see many comments where people say that "it's called" and then in an authoritarian way let you know how only they know what the "real" name is. And yet, and until now, a rose by any other name will smell as sweet as "it's real name". Again, thank you for the informative video and keep them coming.
Been growing a ton of it in the FL Keys, & southern & central Florida. Grows like crazy. Have propagated from cuttings for 15 yrs.
I have a cuban oregano in Florida. It is thriving and went from one small plant to all over as ground cover and up my fence. Learning more about them now. Ty
Haha me too girl. Mine is growing all over the place.
Congratulations I think you have a beautiful channel and I hope you be very successful in this channel
This plant have so many benefits use in cooking or soaking your feet in a warm water
These guys grow soo quick and happy. I start rooting in water and put in soil once the roots are growing. They dont even need to be long. I even clip young pla ts without issues they always grow
Yes they are prolific!
We planted two kinds of oregano in pots...a plain green and with white stripes on it's edge. This plant add beauty in our garden 'coz it is not only herb but also ornamental plant. We boil the leaves to make tea added with honey ...a medicine for colds and stomach ache..The sweet aroma of oregano plant fills our house as it kept on boiling thus purifying our home...It is one of my best plants in our garden nook.
Very interesting! Thank you for all of the information. A friend gave me a start so I hope I can keep it alive now.
Thank you for the video. It was very helpful. I was born & live in Miami. Someone gave me some cuttings of the same plant in your video and thanks to your help I was able to plant them. I had put them in water 2 days ago and already they were sprouting little roots. You are so cute and have such a nice personality that it's a pleasure to watch and learn. Thx!
Thank you! I am glad you found the video helpful.
Where did you get it from? I would like to get some to plant but I don’t have a way of getting it
@@angeella111 "Someone gave me some cuttings " look online to see if home depot has some or ask a neighbor for some clippings.
L live in Ocala FL l have oregano
saludos desde Costa Rica :)
Thank you, I am about to make cuttings on my one now and set in water . Glad I found this video 🤙❤️✌️
Glad it was helpful :)
@@OurTropicalSoil yes I just planted them in soil this week.
That is great. I hope they do well.
This is super cool!! We found a cuban oregano plant in our neighborhood and will try getting a cutting to propagate! Thanks for all the info!
I am glad you found the video helpful. Getting plants from your neighbors is a great way to get free plants!
I have a lot of bare corners on my lawn. These would be perfect grass substitute.
Great video. I'm also from the tropics and love the weather and the idea that I can plant all year round. loved and subbed.
Thank you for the support! Where in the tropics are you? Miami weather is quite tropical but there are warmer regions where trees like cacao, durian, and mangosteen do well in.
@@OurTropicalSoil invitame a comer oregano 🌿
I’m in love with videos like this, good work.
Thank you :)
I hope to see the update. Thanks.
I'm in love with my cuban oregano. A friend gifted her to me when she was just a baby a little over a year ago. I'm about to move from Florida to Alaska, and I've decided to rehome her because I would be upset if she died in Alaska or was confiscated at the Canada border, but I've decided to propogate a couple cuttings and try to take them with me. If it works, I have babies from my favorite plant. If it doesn't like Alaska (I'm confident I can keep it alive in my apartment), or if Canada makes me leave it at the border, at least I know the mother plant is in good hands.
I hope you were able to get it over the border. The couple over at the channel Simple Living Alaska actually grow Cuban oregano. I love their content. I was so shocked when I saw the Cuban oregano growing in one of their videos. I hope yours does well.
Great video simple easy !
Dope channel! Just got a small pot of the Cuban oregano already grown. Going to eat some and let it grow again 😋, hopefully I can really take good care of it 🥺. One ❤️
That sounds great. It grows very easily :)
I am also growing cuban oregano in a similar propagation method and also pruning them on regular intervals.
That is awesome! :)
I grew mine hydroponically using kratky method. They grow giant! I’m going to put some in the side of my house where it’s always damp so I don’t have to water it much. I hope my chickens don’t destroy them lol.
Great job I learned a lot thank you
I have a huge one, but I like your idea of grown cover.
Yep it grows like a weed and smothers everything else haha.
What happens when the Cuban oregano has flowers at the top but roots eventually it will be planted in dirt I just got a clipping of it in water thanks.
what will happen if i propagate it using a single leaf, im nt sure if it will branch out just by one leaf, but mine got a good root system 2 weeks old.
Hmm I am not sure how that would work. I think it is possible but I have not tried it.
Do you know you can root the leaves as well!!😊
I dont know where to get cuban oregano ive had a few from a friend that gave me but i keep letting it die please point me in the right direction on where to get some im located in central jersey. I will def follow you
Have you ever seen it produce flowers or seeds? I did get a leaf with a stem to root but it rotted before it grew into a plant so I don't know if it will or not, you know how fast they grow and it really should have had enought time to grow into something if it were going to, of course I could be wrong. How did your vanilla orchid do? I looked for an update but could not find one. A couple things you that are very beneficial for you to grow are Moringa oleifera and Firebush(Hameloia patens).
No I have never seen the cuban oregano flower or produce seeds. Ideally you would have a longer piece of stem with a least 3 nodes and 2 or 3 leaves. Then you could plant that and it will root. I show a short clip of the vanilla in my video "South Florida Summer Garden || Successes and Failures" around the 15 minute mark. Thanks for the tips. I have moringa growing but I have yet to plant firebush
Yes, it has flowers, then the seeds will drop everywhere, it even grow between concrete where the seeds drop.
how nice!
Thanks!
The planted Cuban oregano in a pot on my lanai. Man what an easy plant to grow. I’ve cut it back twice this year and it just keeps growing so much. It feels more like it’s a succulent, how do you dry it for cooking? Do you use it fresh? I haven’t been able to find any recipes that call for it. Hello from Naples, Fl.
Yes it grows like crazy for me too! Very easy to grow and when the branches get long and touch the ground they root and plant spreads a bit into a large bush. The leaves are kind of succulent. We have never dried it. We just use it fresh. We don't find a need to dry cause its always growing. I just throw it in a lot of things like in a stir fry or roasted vegetable but we use it to season a soup or a pot of beans. We cook it down in the beginning in the "sofrito." Sofrito is like the base for a lot of Cuban meals. It has garlic, onions, peppers, and we throw the chopped cuban oregano in fresh. My dad loves the whole leaf in a sandwich or on some toast but my dad has a bit of a quirky taste haha.
My neighbor gave me.one of these. Its pretty foolproof, even for a terrible gardener like me.
Yes they grow and grow on neglect!
The leaves are really good to treat coughs.
Yes I have heard that as well. Many common herbs have multiple medicinal uses as well. :)
Im gonna chew a few right away before I make the oregano tea! Thanks!!!
Where did you get those shears? It's extremely sharp.
What region are you in?
Can this oregano be used in Lasagna?
Can you grow them indoor. I want to order them on amazon. So expensive for 1 tiny plant. I grow up with this plant around my old house but never grow them indoor before. The juice of the leaves while very spicy, it treats sore throat very well.
Hello, I have not tried growing them indoors but I think they will do well. They do not like cold weather and also really like the shade. Just make sure to keep the soil moist and maybe spray some water on the leaves every now and then to increase the humidity around the plant or you can grow it in a bathroom. I think giving the plant a bigger pot would be good so that it can grow larger and you can have more leaves to harvest. I have heard of drinking the tea before for a sore throat but never the juice. The tea doesn't have much flavor. I hope you get a healthy plant!
It grows like a weed. Weeds just survive no matter what.
The less artificial selection a species was under, the more it is attuned to survival.
Soak a cutting in fresh water a few days until it sprouts and plop it into a pot on a windowsill.
Soon enough you'll move from worrying if it'll grow to wondering if you should cut most of it.
Not sure where you live but you can buy large plants from the Home Depot when they start selling herb starter plants.
If want so cheap. Give a call steve anton 478 319 8688.
I ll send 5 cutting. Just pay mail
Do you still live in south Florida ?
Hello, Ive heard that Oregano needs to be planted in a specific location, ie north, south, east or west direction. Can you comment?
I have not heart that about Cuban oregano. I am not sure about regular italian oregano. I don't see why it would need to be planted in any specific location. Cuban oregano prefers shady locations so make sure the area you are planting it in is shady. I am not sure what the requirements for regular oregano is but I have mind in a shady location also and it is doing okay.
you can plant the leaves too they will root
Yes, I have since then heard of this. I haven't tried it yet but it is very interesting!
We got a big tree of that, like 4 feet tall and got a huge trunk.
Wow! Nice. How many years has it been growing?
Our Tropical Soil It'll be four years old this year.
Killber Amazuki That’s awesome! It’s such a strong plant :)
I've read that if you let grow too big it loses its potency. How does your smell?
My stem of this plant got broken. Its a new plnt. Its winter here. How to make my plant survive? I gt this plant from store!
It depends how much was broken off. If a stem breaks you can also just put it in water and it will root. Then you will have a new plant you can plant into soil. Cuban oregano is very resilient though.
will they root from just a leaf or a piece of a leaf?
I would think it is possible, but I have not done it or seen anyone that has. I know there is the method known as tissue culture but that is growing a new plant from cells of an existing plant not a leaf cutting exactly.
Often when I propogate from stem cuttings, and remove the lower leaves...I tend to just poke those leaves into the soil. They do root, but I've never seen any new leaf growth from it afterwards
Do you use the leaves in cooking or just throw them away? Cuban Oregano smells so great.
We use them to season food. Mainly for soups and beans. It does smell very good!
@@OurTropicalSoil and tea
Use your hands. Touch and feel the soil only then you can get connected to mother earth
Can you root the cuttings in water?also..i live in a cold zone ..could I save seeds from them..?do they make seeds the first year? Thank you
Yes the cuttings root very easily in water! I haven seen the plant flower but it is uncommon and when it flowers I haven't seed any seeds. Your best bet is to take some cuttings in the fall before the plant dies and root them in water then transplant to a pot and keep somewhere warm with some light till spring comes and you can plant it. If you plant a rooted plant in spring I think you will end up with a pretty big plant by fall.
@@OurTropicalSoil wonderful..thank you so much
How can I tell if a plant is cuban oregano? I think I have some growing in front of my house but I am not sure? Any clues that you can offer?
I have a plant profile I wrote on it. You can read it and compare the pictures to your plant. ourtropicalsoil.com/2018/07/18/cuban-oregano/ If you want send me an email with some pictures and I can help confirm it. My email is ourtropicalsoil@gmail.com
where is the updated cuban oregano and vanilla orchid video ? can we see
I want to make a video on just the update of cuban oregano and the vanilla orchid. Multiple people have asked to see it. :)
Here is the update :) czcams.com/video/zUzvUSlBwYA/video.html
I need the seeds
It grows like an invasive species, but will eventually die after a few years of growth. If anybody wants to keep the plants for a longer period, consider planting a new one from a young stem peice every 6 months or so.
Hi Melanie! Where do you get Cuban oregano?
I got a small plant from my aunt. There are cuban oregano plants sold online though. You can get 1 plant and then later propagate it to have a ton of Cuban oregano! I haven't seen my plants flower or seed so I don't think propagating my seed is common.
These things are so hard to kill and can be replicated multiple times
You thow leaves into a compost pile and then after a while you see they start growing again lmao
helo there
