  • As a Skate Dad, I have learned or figured out over the years certain things (aka "hacks") to make things easier, more enjoyable, or "best practices" that work for our family to support our son's passion for skateboarding.
One of the things that we learned early on in Justin's Journey was that he was a visual learner.
The first thing we did is to teach him the rules of the skatepark or skatepark etiquette.
To be able to teach him, we created a visual 'social story' of the skatepark rules for his home park and we would keep a copy in the car and review it on the drive to the park or upon arriving.
We hope that this can be a resource to other autism parents trying to introduce skateboarding and the skatepark to their child. Further, this format can possibly be used for other children not on the spectrum, but more comfortable or visually oriented vs. auditory/reading comprehension as part of their learning process.
This methodology could perhaps be used for other activities such as other board sports, martial arts, team sports, etc.
Should you wish to have a soft copy, please send an email to skating4satori[at]gmail.com
We will be happy to send you a copy of the resource
