Skate Dad Hacks | Supporting Your Child's Skateboarding & Avoiding the Talk in the Car Ride Home

Sharing personal reflection and opinion on supporting a child's skateboarding and avoiding the dreaded talk in the car ride home. A recent video on TikTok of a baseball dad engaging in batting practice with his son became the catalyst for this video.
They say that many children make the decision to quit a sport or activity on the car ride home and many end up not playing after middle school.
We do not talk about skateboarding with our son to or from the skatepark with the exception of making sure he has all of his equipment and if he had fun. Hopefully, this will provide another perspective to keep things light and to enjoy the invaluable connection as a family through a shared passion.

Hi Matsuda sensei: you don't know me, and I don't know you, either. But I had known of you because I started kendo in 1999. 20+ years later, I'm still doing kendo in the most amateur manner possible, but I also have a young son now. Your words and perspectives really resonate with me. I will think of your advices often, and avoid becoming that father in the car ride home. Thank you.
