Our son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at the age of 3. At 5.5 years old, he got on a skateboard.
The initial goal by middle school was for him to hopefully be able to ride the skateboard on the flat ground of the school playground. He has far exceeded all of our expectations and we never thought that he would continue to progress or remain passionate about riding his skateboard at the skatepark for over 10 years now.
Over the years, skateboarding has become his form of self expression, a sense of belonging, and identity for our son. The ability to skate allows him to experience fun, freedom and a creative outlet to express himself.
The openness of the skateboarding community and skateboarding itself, he can ride any way that he wants. Sometimes the same way as others, and other times differently from the rest. Whatever park we go to, we feel that it is a true safe space that allows him to be himself without judgment. He is able to have a sense of belonging, confidence and purpose in life beyond his therapies and practicing behavioral and life skills.
The greatest gift of skateboarding continues to be the relationship with our son. We have a common bond and language that we share with our family.
In this video, we have changed the format a bit. Instead of showcasing progression, we are sharing clips of our family's "Connection Sessions" with JMAN and Dad bonding and enjoying numerous father & son skateboarding sessions together at the various skateparks visited since the beginning of the year and doing mirrored lines and the same or similar tricks.
