American College Student Goes Missing in France

- An international search is underway for an American college student who has gone missing while studying abroad in France. Twenty-two-year-old Ken DeLand Jr. was last seen on December 3rd in Montelimar, France. DeLand is a senior studying pre-law and psychology during a semester abroad. He was scheduled to return home this week and resume classes at St. John's Fisher University in Rochester, New York. His mom, Carol Laws, says French police were notified by his school after he failed to show up to class.
Hopefully this young man will be found safe, but over a week and no contact with friends and family is a bad sign!

I'm glad you said that. Some places have laws which require the people who work at a school to notify law enforcement whenever a crime is committed against a student at a school, on the way to school, or on the way home from school.

The scariest part is that you don't know what happens to him, so many thoughts and so many things could happen to him. We all hope he was found alive, healthy and nothing happens to him.

This is a very unlikely case but maybe he just lost his phone and he’s just having fun in France, and is going to make his plane in 5 days. I mean his plane hasn’t departed yet. I really hope this is just a big misunderstanding and or something not serious. My well wishes go out to all of his friends and family, and I hope he gets home safe and sound soon.
That doesn’t make sense. If he lost his phone he would’ve contacted his family with other devices, he would’ve seen the news and realized that everyone is looking for him and he would’ve go to college, he would’ve talked to his friends, etc
This is gonna sound unlikely, since we don't know much about him or his case. But maybe he got lost while exploring the France catacombs. Idk, him going to a sporting goods store and having a backpack on before he went missing. Maybe he was planning to either explore the catacombs and got lost. Or maybe he went on a hike or to a gym. That's just my theory tho.

Idk his situation but when you're abroad, especially as a tourist, it's always not a bad idea to leave a paper trail wherever you go in the form of purchases from local shops/services (public transport, gym, restaurants, etc.) there. That's helpful for the local detectives in tracing your whereabouts if you get lost or get kidnapped.
Also ideally if possible, have at least one trustworthy local contact living in the city/town you're going to visit. Could be a friend or even just an online follower from social media that knows the area. Let them know your public itinerary while you're staying at their city such as which places you plan on visiting on what day, etc. or even just your daily routine there.
I've watched the Eli Roth movie Hostel . I ain't going to Europe. Ok. That's why I live in America and own a handgun. I don't trust the police.

My buddy did this in england, he was fine , he had found a lovely girl and went on dates , left phone at hotel and never came back they traveled train and he bought new phone ,called 4 weeks later

yeah like the majority of western/all Europe can speak english as a 2nd/ 3rd language. Maybe not fluent, but enough to get information across especially in jobs like police and higher level jobs. Bit of a weird thing to not go search for your missing son over

Update : he is alive and went to a visit to spain, he saw himself on the news and called his father informing him he that he was safe

Has @InsideEdition contacted French media in the region he was studying in? You mentioned he spent $8.40 in a sports store the day he went missing.What did he buy? Eg .Hiking map. Can you find out if his credit card has been used since then? My hope is that if he went hiking in the region he is just injured and his mobile phone may be out of reach of phone towers.

There has been an upstate on Kenny, they say they found him in Spain and that he's alive and well. Although Kenny hasn't shared any details on how he got to Spain, his mom is in France and preparing to see her son. The way Kenny found out he was missing was he saw himself on the news. That's all the update has said so far.

Being lost in a place thousands of miles away from home is perhaps one of the worst feelings in the world. i hope he is doing fine.
As a possibility, the area he's in is a region (I guess that's what you call a state/provence) just north from a known French Foreign Legion recruitment center in southern France. They could try checking there if he haven't changed his name yet.

I truly hope that he is found safe. As a US citizen who lives in France, I cannot understand this view that France is dangerous. There is very little crime here. I have seen 2 murders on the news all year. Y’all live in the US where violent crime is normal. That is not the case here and probably in most countries without easy access to guns. There is a strong sense of community here. Once a child was lost on a train and all of the trains in the country were stopped until he was found. It only took 25minutes, but we were all offered a partial refund. Everyone on my train was just concerned about the child. Yes, violence is everywhere, but the level of violence and crime in the US is unimaginable here. Hopefully the student will be found safe.

The parents calls easily travel. They have usa passports that allow them to travel anywhere unlike other people. They use every excuse to not go but as a parent, they shouldn’t even have to think about it. They know where he goes to college. Where he is living. They need to get there and pressure the police to search for them. They don’t seem to really care and it’s annoying when parents don’t act fast.
Yeah I agree that seems extremely weird that they use the “idk the language” excuse when they can literally hire a translator and search his trail, dorm/living quarters, cell phone pings for clues.
