Hey Jerry, My dad was from Manchester, England and served in the British Army during WW2. He told me that the reason Leslie Howard's plane was shot down was because the Germans knew that Mr. Howard had been carrying Intelligence from the points of origin to the Allied Headquarters in London. As an actor it was easy for him to explain "why" he was traveling so much. My father told me that Leslie Howard boarded the plane that was due to be shot down *knowing* that he was going to his death. That British Intelligence had already decoded the encryption the Germans had been using in their communications, and yet - in order to preserve the illusion that they had yet to receive the key components, (which they believed Mr. Howard was carrying), Mr. Howard went through with the mission knowing that he was never going to see his family again.

Jerry Skinner I think he felt a deeper duty than most as having been sent home with PTSD gave him a feeling of being "less of a man", (in those days it was *never* discussed nor understood as a "real by-product of war"), so - yes - he felt compelled by those who simply *asked* him to undertake the mission, to perform it. And, no - he wasn't the kind of man who (oddly enough), sought out credit for simply "doing his job". A most unique individual - thank you for honoring him here Jerry.
Leslie Howard was so young when he died......what a tragic death of someone so young. He certainly was a great actor and I will never forget him playing with the great Bette Davis in `Of Human Bondage`.

I'd strongly disagree with the 'significant factor' part. Most Jews did not openly fight/rebel/defy the Germans during WWII. They did not enlist as the rest of Europe (claiming it was against their religion). The lucky ones fled to North & South Americas (eg. Einstein) & some who stayed in Europe, with the help of Gentiles were hidden from societies until the end of the war. The rest, were unfortunately put in ghettos & later in concentration camps along with millions of Gentiles.

I was only recently made aware of Howard's activities, over and above being an actor, and I have been trying to gather as much information as I can on this heroic man. We cannot let the memories of people like him fade away.

I read The Scarlet Pimpernel when I was a teenager. It was not required reading, and the teachers did not even talk about it in English Literature class. I happened to run across a copy in the school library, and the Librarian was a friend who recommended it with a smile of enjoyment. I knew then it would be a great read. Of course, years later, I saw the movie, on late night TV before political comedies became the thing, and enjoyed that rendition as well. When I saw the Pimpernel Smith movie I thought it would be good. When I saw Leslie Howard was in it I 'knew' it was going to be great. Thank you for sharing this bit of history. It is so sad that today's Entertainment representatives are so negative about our country, when their predecessors lived and died to produce great movies, both as entertainment and as 'propaganda' in support of the Free World countries.

We've had some of this conversation before and I must say that I understand you perfectly! You know I'd tell you if I thought differently! You take your time throughout your narrations because you appreciate the fact that "down-home" can be difficult to understand when spoken at a person's normal cadence. She's merely throwing some sour grapes in here for some reason and as a non-native speaking person who was transplanted from who knows where, has difficulty with your accent. Yep, that is the story I heard too that though Bogart was in the role of Duke Mantee in the stage version of 'Petrified Forrest' and that the powers that be did not want him for the movie and Lesley Howard told the big shots that if they did not offer Bogart the role then he would not be in their picture either. What a beautiful act of loyalty for a friend!

When I read the Margaret Mitchell novel, "Gone With the Wind" at age 16, I had a mental image of Ashley Wilkes. When I saw the movie in re-release they year I was 21, the actor, Leslie Howard, was exactly how I pictured Ashley Wilkes to be. Later, I purchased a video of him with Bette Davis entitled "Of Human Bondage", again after having read the novel. He starred in the precursor to "My Fair Lady"--"Pygmalion"--and "The Scarlet Pimpernel", too. He was multi-faceted and talented. We lost him far too soon.
He's been one of my top 3 actors of all time since I was little and saw The Petrified Forest. And he's still my favorite Sir Percy in The Scarlet Pimpernel.
Leslie Howard was killed 11 years before I was born. I first saw him in GWTW in the late '60s & have seen this movie many times. I have always admired him. I first saw Intermezzo about 20 years ago & earlier this year saw The Petrified Forest. Then It's Love I'm After recently. That did it; now he has a piece of my heart. I just love this man, his bravery, character, gentility, kindness. I have seen 12 of his movies now & in due time it will be all of his movies that are available. Each one is special. RIP, Leslie; you left a great and touching legacy in a life gone too soon.

I'm devoted to the work of Leslie Howard and thought I knew everything that is public knowledge of his life. However, I never read anything about him in an auto accident. His son Ronald in a book about Howard said that years after the war he met a young man who told him that as a child traveling to England he and his nurse where bumped off that airplane to make room for Leslie. Lucky kid!
Thanks Jerry, Arch Whitehouse,was a well-published author who wrote many books on WWI aviation . He claims that as an American in the British trenches circa 1915 Leslie Howard was his young officer. He claimed that one morning this young officer walked out of the trenches into the fog and disappeared towards the German trenches.

Was there one movie where Leslie Howard did not epitomize the classic British debonair gentleman? He and Ronald Colman were two of my all-time favorites, by far. And both are terribly missed. I thank them a million times for their contributions to film. Their mission was greatly accomplished.

A charming elegant man (and no am in no way gay thanks, but always admire elegance in anyone) : the curious thing here is that at 160,227 views... there are (with mine added) so far 858 thumbs up... and 41 thumbs down... now this is not exactly a political blip... so I'm sort of curious as to why anyone would thumbs down a u-t like this?! Indeed, the only reason I thumb at all is because it seems strange that anyone would disparage a down over such a bit of interesting info concerning the dramatic arts... and the real drama of life...

When I read the Margaret Mitchell novel, "Gone With the Wind" at age 16, I had a mental image of Ashley Wilkes. When I saw the movie in re-release they year I was 21, the actor, Leslie Howard, was exactly how I pictured Ashley Wilkes to be. Later, I purchased a video of him with Bette Davis entitled "Of Human Bondage", again after having read the novel. He starred in the precursor to "My Fair Lady"--"Pygmalion"--and "The Scarlet Pimpernel", too. He was multi-faceted and talented. We lost him far too soon.
He's been one of my top 3 actors of all time since I was little and saw The Petrified Forest. And he's still my favorite Sir Percy in The Scarlet Pimpernel.
Leslie Howard was killed 11 years before I was born. I first saw him in GWTW in the late '60s & have seen this movie many times. I have always admired him. I first saw Intermezzo about 20 years ago & earlier this year saw The Petrified Forest. Then It's Love I'm After recently. That did it; now he has a piece of my heart. I just love this man, his bravery, character, gentility, kindness. I have seen 12 of his movies now & in due time it will be all of his movies that are available. Each one is special. RIP, Leslie; you left a great and touching legacy in a life gone too soon.

Most people who talk on the CZcams speak so fast and auctioneer would have a hard time understand them. I like listing to you and enjoy the stories you share with us. Keep up the good work.
I'm devoted to the work of Leslie Howard and thought I knew everything that is public knowledge of his life. However, I never read anything about him in an auto accident. His son Ronald in a book about Howard said that years after the war he met a young man who told him that as a child traveling to England he and his nurse where bumped off that airplane to make room for Leslie. Lucky kid!
Thanks Jerry, Arch Whitehouse,was a well-published author who wrote many books on WWI aviation . He claims that as an American in the British trenches circa 1915 Leslie Howard was his young officer. He claimed that one morning this young officer walked out of the trenches into the fog and disappeared towards the German trenches.

Was there one movie where Leslie Howard did not epitomize the classic British debonair gentleman? He and Ronald Colman were two of my all-time favorites, by far. And both are terribly missed. I thank them a million times for their contributions to film. Their mission was greatly accomplished.
