For me, my family and my friends in the 1950s he WAS Superman. He was so good in that role we couldn't imagine anyone else being Superman. We loved him so.
One mistake GR made was turning down the opportunity to star as Dick Tracy. It would have really gotten him out of the Superman character. He could've put more of himself into it.
I'm 68 years old and grew up watching "Superman" as a child. In 1959 at age twelve I remember sitting with my Father as it was announced on TV that George Reeves had died by committing suicide, as a twelve years old I could not believe this could have happened. But how ever his death occurred and being raise watching Superman as a twelve year old his death was something I could not grasp. Now at age 68 they are showing reruns of "Superman" on weekends, so now some 56 years after the show ended I'm being taken back to my early youth to re-enjoy one of the early TV programs I so enjoyed so many years ago.
I'm your age. I loved all the characters on the show. Being interested in photography, Jimmy Olsen held a special place for me. Plus he was Superman's pal. My favorite villain on this and other shows at the time was John Doucette. I'm not sure why... maybe 'cause he looked like my dad. I've always liked good villains. I don't remember the TV show ever having Luthor or Mr. Mxyztplk (original spelling), which was disappointing. I would've like to have seen the miniature city of Kandor also. I never could stand Batman or the other DC "heroes." To me they were ripoffs of Superman.
I got to meet George in the 50s in Tennessee as Superman... I'll never ever forget that day... I along with hundreds of other kids got to shake his hand...
No... and it's a problem.. haha.. Before he came out to shake kids hands... His handlers announced.. "Now kids, we all know Superman is the man of steel... but if you throw things at him to test that, you will make him very angry." Never forgot that... haha
You are, to me, one of the best story tellers. I enjoy your voice, your "paced" way, not hurried and very clear. I believe the world today is, in other ways, including verbally, way too fast and therefor VERY UNCLEAR to a lot of folks, including me. I appreciate the relaxed manner and for me, the information you give is most interesting. Thank you ....Karen
Deplorable American Lazy too! very accurate commentary, so if it is known that Reeves was gay he most definitely committed suicide cause he couldn't accept that he could handle a marriage
My Super man was George Reeves ,I remember ,,I use to run to the pictures to see my hero in the early 1950 s he was the greatest ,,in the pictures all the kids love him they all wished they could fly like there hero ,, Thank you Jerry you do a wonderful job I look at all your work Best Regards Darrell Gordon ................PS I loved my Hoppy too ..
He was a thoughtful, kind person, and with Clayton Moore the heroes of the fifties. May they both rest in peace, and thanks for this presentation, Jerry!
Thank you for this wonderful tribute to Actor George Reeves -- television's Superman. I grew up watching reruns of "The Adventures of Superman". I will always remember him as a great actor and as one of my boyhood heroes.
I used to watch super man when I was a kid. I always thought it was funny how he would stand there and be shot in the chest till the gun was empty, then the bad guy would throw the emptied gun at him and he would duck lol. RIP George
She killed him. You forgot to mention that they had an argument that night, according to guests, and that she was upstairs when they heard the gunshot. That is the original report.
Such a rare person for Hollywood. Poor kids, he'd never commit suicide thinking of them. He was young still, and everything was going just fine, gentle man.

I am not from the South, but those understand, when I say "BLESS YOUR HEART'. It is the southern way, nice way of saying.."HOW STUPID ARE YOU?" BLESS YOUR HEART. I am not born in America & even I know, how different regions speak.
Georges old B&W Superman episodes gave me inspiration to read the comics starting at age 7 without which I doubt I would have been the reader and worker I was all of my life, a great actor indeed. Thank you Jerry!
I agree with the lady below, Well, maybe not the best, but love hearing your voice ~mmmmm, thank you for this quest ~ I try to read up on my STARS, but so many of them. Thanks for being that guy for us! Stay caring and know, you do delight so many of us ~ and we appreciate what you do! Bless a Jerry of Skinnr
I understand how much work is involved in making these videos. Thank you very much and please continue with future presentations. Ignore the rude comments from the obvious mentally disabled.
The 50's George Reeves "The Adventures of Superman" TV series was a huge hit in Australia, telecast on the National 9 Network, Australia-wide, up until the early 1970's. At one stage in the 1960's episodes were played each weekday in the children's afternoon time slot. The 104 episodes were telecast on 16mm black & white film and extremely popular TV action adventure show.
He WAS Superman, all others that came later are just poor imitations. Growing up in the 1950's Superman was my hero, and Superman was George Reeves, Thank You George, may you rest in peace.
Thanks from Australia, Jerry. Always informative and good watching. I feel like you’re talking just to me as we’re sitting on your front porch. Thanks again. 🏆
Suicide, Bull Shit. Reeves was loved by tens of millions. There was plenty of work for him. A new Superman program was in the works for him. He was murdered and the police know who did it. The story surrounding his death is a fairy tale. Lots of great comments here. My pleasure to be amongst them. Mark Davis.
I was just a kid when Superman was on TV. I remember sitting watching TV with my Dad when it was announced that George Reeves had died from an apparent suicide, I was a little older by then but just could not believe that Superman had took his own life.
Growing up in Pittsburgh in the mid 70's, I remember watching Superman (with George Reeves) in the early morning hours before school (maybe 6 or 6:30?). A childhood memory!
I remember it like it was yesterday, now more than half century later the memory is vivid and clear. As a small boy standing in front of our old, tiny black and white Philco T.V., bursting with excitement and anticipation to hear those long awaited ( from a week ago) words, "Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's SUPERMAN"! I never missed an episode unless I was not at home or our T.V.. was not working, I'll never forget those wonderful days long ago and the man who was my hero and influenced my sense of right and wrong for a lifetime.
My serious childhood hero. I think I would not wanted to know all of this. But, it is just as important and I feel Superman played by this man will always live, on my screen, in my living room and mostly in my heart! Mr Reeves is the only true Superman, my hero for life!
You can see by my logo that I am an AVID Superman fan!! In '59, I was not aware of his death. I didn't understand what I was hearing. It was even said that "Superman jumped out a window because he really thought he could fly". I have read the book "Hollywood Kryptonite", I have the DVD "Hollywoodland" and I have the complete six seasons of "Adventures of Superman" on DVD. George Reeves, Superman ~ ~ my HERO!! ;-) שלום

You don't speak for me.
Of course not. I've edited my statement to make it more specific.
Aw right, den!
Love...You may speak for me! ^ 5.
Well I like Christopher Reeves. But I can see George being a great Superman too.
I LOVE THE SOUND OF JERRY'S VOICE WHEN HE TELLS THESE STORIES
Wow gone but not ever forgotten
I remember seeing the article in the newspaper that day...I was a young boy at the time. I didn't believe it was suicide then and I still don't.
Bri G. this guy needs to get off the internet. I'm sick of this hick.

was he a nice man when you met him?
Hard to make that judgment when you are just one of a thousand or more smelly, sweating kids waiting in line to shake his had...

I couldn't get enough of watching Superman as a kid in the 1960's...
"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." (Could well be the case; ask Betty Broderick)
I was 14 at the time. I remember thinking how ironic. I was sad though. In my mind he still is the only Superman!
Rest in Peace George. Thanks Jerry.
