Doug, I really appreciate the painting videos, because there are some of my carvings that I spend more time painting than I do carving. This is so helpful!
Awesome video. I don’t paint very good at all, my wife watched your painting video on the fairly doors and she did great. Now she paints a lot of my carvings. By the way I have a granddaughter who says the fairy doors are for mice😂
Hi Doug, thanks for sharing your craft and teaching those of us who struggle how we can improve. I have watched you for years, and have enjoyed seeing how your art has evolved. ❤
Thanks for the video. As usual picked up some small tips that can make me a better artisan. I think painting your piece is as important as the carving. I've seen some nice carvings ruined by bad paint jobs. When I paint I see how I could have made my carving better and easier to paint.
Thank you Doug, again a great video! I leaned so much. The blending of colors, and using the watered down black for shadowing. So many great tips… really appreciate all you do
Thank you Doug, very enjoyable painting video. Appreciate all you do for us. Learning so much from yourself every video you post. Can't wait to see what you are planning to carve for us over this coming Christmas.
Thanks Doug, Very informative. Always had issue with blending and highlight technique. This really helped.
Doug, thank you for all of your tutorials, love them all.
Hi Doug, I just recently finished a carving of a little man and decided to just stain him and not use paint
to keep a woody look / after seeing this video I’m rethinking that decision and I think I’ll try painting again
thanks for another wonderful video , all the best, josh
Thanks Josh!!
I’ve been trying my hand at carving, but having a tough go at it. Because of a mini-stroke during the first of several craniotomies, my entire left side is partially numb.
Have you tried a carving clamp? That might help you use one hand
No, but I will look into that. Thank you for the tip. I definitely appreciate it.👍
You can use a carving platform that you clamp down. Square wood three sides are edged and material glued in that helps to hold wood in place. Try relief carving. Find picture make paper copy rub pencil on back. Lay on flat carving wood and trace the outline. Lift off go over lines and start carving. Leave high points for last
You might also try carving soap or sweet potatoes or apples to help retrain your muscles. I like to use soap to test out an idea before carving in wood because the softer soap is quicker to prototype.
There's also power carving options if the clamp doesn't work out. Never personally used any but they seem like a good fit for someone w physical disabilities.
Hi Doug. I discovered fractionated coconut oil for sealing. It doesn't go rancid (Eww)! Just a thought. Be warm, be groovy!
I use Americana Triple Thick brilliant brush on gloss glaze on the eyes. Gives them a real sparkle.
Love the new merch 💚🇬🇧🌱 very helpful video for those who always ask about your methods, you have come such a long way since your early paint jobs👍👍👍
Hi Doug ❣️ Love all this info, tips are important from an artist!! Thanks so much🥰✌🏼
Thanks Doug - a very helpful video. I use the terra Nova naturoil to seal my carvings. I live about a two hour drive from Kevin Coates and from time to time I will drive out to see him and have a chat. I enjoy and learn from all your videos. Thanks.
There are tons of good tips to be had in here. Thanks Doug!
Gooood evening from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great night!
Doug many years ago I had a ceramic shop and did a lot of dry-brushing. This is a very good video; thanks for sharing..
Thanks Doug, I like to see your painting techniques. Thanks for sharing.
Great video Doug. I particularly found the oiling bit interesting since I have done some painting but mostly have done the oiling as a finishing coat.
This was SO helpful!! I have always admired your painting--now I know some of your secrets!! I watched every minute. Thank you SO MUCH!
Excellent thanks Doug. ❤❤❤
A great video Doug, well worth watching your process and informative tips 👏
Fantastic video Doug! Thanks as always
This was an an amazingly helpful video and has given me the insight into painting my finished pieces so much better. Thanks for taking the time to show us Doug.
This was so much fun. Thx for doing this Doug and sharing. 👍👍👍👍👍
Very well put together 😊👍 answered most of my questions I had as a beginner

Thanks, Doug; just what I’ve been looking for!
Doug thank you for the great video I'm getting ready to try my hand at painting my carvings and your video really helped me. Thank you again

Really appreciate the painting video. Feel like i'm learning more all the time, and video's like this are the major contributing factor!
Thanks Doug!!
That was a brilliant video. Thank you so much for your expertise on painting.
You are the best. In this season of being thankful...I am thankful for you and your fantastic videos. Happy Holiday Season Doug...and thanks for being so genuine
I am watching your instructions because I want to apply paint to some of my carvings. My biggest 2 problems are lack of knowledge and hand tremors. Thank you! Please do more tutorials.
Super helpful Doug! Thanks
You are a great teacher! I’m just beginning my carving and learning so much from you! Thank you!
Hey Doug that’s brilliant, thanks for sharing! 👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
You have an amazing work Thank you for sharing
When I get to finishing a carving, I stop and never can figure out how to finish. My philosophy is that the process is more important than the product.
Excellent video!
Wow! Very impressive, Doug. It's obvious that your artistic talent is not limited to carving. Thanks!
Love the painting video! Thanks so much.
Thanks Doug, Another great video
Thanks for all the tips love the videos

Excellent work here. Great tips. Thanks!
Thank you Doug great videos 😊
Thanks Doug, took care of my question.
Revisited,.... Doug, intriguing for sure. will be changing my finishing process a bit. That's the interesting thing about carving be open to change when it's beneficial. Looking forward to your program on crackling. Have a Blessed day.
Thanks!
Muchas gracias por tus videos, aprendo mucho con ellos. Un saludo
I made an elaborate holder. I took a 2x2x2 block and drilled a 1” flat bottom hole about an inch deep. I filled that hole with lead for weight. I attached a 1x1x6, centering it on on the opposite face of the 2x2x2 block. On the other end of the 1x1 block, I have a drywall screw glued in like your version. It is a perfect handle and will stand up vertically on its own when I need to sit it down. It is heavy enough to stand up to the hairs dryer when I need to dry something
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I am sure you do not get as good a return on these, so I want to thank you for doing this!
Great techniques ..thanks for sharing 😊
Cheers Doug, this was really usefull. I havnt painted any of my carvings yet, may be I'll give it a go now.
Great video!!!!
Appreciate the instruction, Doug!
Thanks!! Appreciate it
Cool! Great Content! Good job, Doug!
StaySafe! 😂
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻Awesome video!
Invaluable info ! Many many thanks!
Parabéns , Doug, acompanho você aqui do Brasil, fiz uma cabana de toras modelo Canadense aqui em casa onde faço as minhas peças. Obrigado por sempre compartilhar ❤
Thanks I have been struggling with the painting
Like the video very much, thanks again Doug
Mighty Fine! Thank you.
Thank you for posting re disposal of USED RAGS. Using a toothpick for the eye bc I didn't have a teeny tiny paint brush!
Love this channel
Doug, you have read my mind with this video. I just got a set of really good quality acrylic paints( I usually do woodblock paintings) , but all of my miniature carvings ( all from your videos) have ended up looking terrible. I envisioned these grand pieces, gradients, shades etc but I always end up with a single color that looks horrible. Uploaded this vid just the right time as I'm in the process of making Christmas presents. Thanks so much sensei
Great info!!
Thank you for the tips
I needed this video.... thank you...
Great help 👍
This was very helpful, thanks
Super therapeutic video! I guess it's time I get some knives again and get back into carving
Painting is one very weak area in my skills. I think i need smaller brushes ans a steadier hand. And a lot of practice. This video has been most helpful.
I use water color paints for my carvings. Building layers after each dries in the areas I want to darken up. It takes a lot more time but I personally love the look it provides.
Try acrylic inkt. Dries very fast and you can water it down extreemly much. Dont need oils and stuf
Thanks for sharing. I always wondered you did you finnishes.
cute saying! great job!
I do not like painting, mostly because it comes out half ass. This video might change that. Thank you 🙏
I love the not planned comic relief😂
Hi Doug. Enjoyed your video’s during recovery from surgery and have tried only a few- did ok but not as smooth as i would like them! I know it can be my wood and also my knife-trying different wood and when i get some time i will try again-hopefully soon! Just wondering if you have any advice that might help? Look forward to all your videos and thank you! Have a good day
I use the wax and feed also..i love it..and it smell.s good
Thank.s for the video.
It.ll help me with my painting for sure..
Did you use Howards on a finished painted Santa? Doug used in on a raw wood carving. I'm not sure if it can also be used after painting.
@@carverbp i use it after painting ...i have retouched paint work after useing it and had no problem.s..
Good video
Made me drag a poplar branch back home from a walk..
Hey Doug. I love the painting videos. I watch all your videos. I love whittling. However. My biggest struggle is keeping my knives and gouges sharp. Would doing a tool sharpening tutorial video be difficult? Thanks.
Nice, comprehensive tutorial Doug. I keep reading that in the artist painting world you never put acrylics over oils. They say it would crack and peel. Don't know and maybe a question for Alec. Thanks!
You wouldn’t use acrylic paint over oil based paint when it comes to painting, the gloss will create a bad bond. But the oil paint doesn’t penetrate wood like just oil does. Oils like BLO or tung oil will penetrate and harden. This can prepare the wood for just about any paint mix.
@@wattsnex2725 So the oil has to dry before putting acrylics over it?
@@billyaxley1762basically yes. The oil soaks into the wood any excess should be wiped off. You can paint then. If you paint shortly after oiling, the oil can help with paint bleeding. If you wait a few days, the oil will harden more, which can be good because it prevents thinned paint from getting sucked in and blotchy. I prefer painting shortly after oiling. I know plenty of people that skip the oil and apply poly to seal, and just paint over the poly. You can really layer well with that technique as it is easy wipe off paint. Creates great shadows.
Try putting aluminium foil over your plastic palette before tutting paints in. After paints dry you can just toss foil and you have a clean palette.
i am amazed that you oiled them and then paint them , you would think the oil would keep the paint from sticking! very interesting!
Great tutorial Doug, THANKYOU. I've found the Howard-Feed-N-Wax a wee bit oily (and takes a while to dry) but no doubt protects the carving. Thanks from Titanic Town.
Steve, did you use Howard's on a painted carving or raw wood? If you used it on painted, I'm interested in your thoughts on how it turned out an looks.
Hi Karl, only tried it on carved wood and it took a good 24hrs to become even touch dry.@@carverbp
I am wondering can you paint over Howards FnW
I’m not a fan of painted sculptures. But for Christmas decorations it’s almost necessary. I agree paint that’s thinned like stain looks better.
Thanks for another great video Doug!! Would the following process work for a good antique look?
1.) paint carving with acrylics
2.) seal with howards wax
3.) apply antiquing medium and wipe off
4.) reseal with howards
Thank you so much for all the videos you post. I'm a beginner and have learned so much.
I have a question, though. As someone who has painted with acrylics on canvas for decades, I was always taught that it was a big no-no to paint acrylics over oil. Oil prevents acrylics from adhering. So when I see you seal your carvings with oil and then paint with acrylics, I am very confused. However, it seems to work for you, so I trust that you understand the science behind it. Can you explain why it works?
