I'm a bed bound disabled 48 yr old woman who found you by accident. Now I'm getting into whittling because of you! I'm just afraid I don't have the strength to actually whittle. I made your Christmas pickle. But I can't seem to get deep cuts. I am getting some flexcut knives for xmas so I hope it helps me. Please keep these videos coming, they are therapy for me. So soothing and your work is amazing. Thanks for the inspiration!! I hope to get even half as good as you!
I'm not as young as I used to be and find that I put my work in vise on my carving bench and use a wood mallet and chisels I can get so much done with less pain, if you had a lap table and a small vise attached it would make it so much easier for the deeper cuts and less fear of hurting yourself when you cannot hold your work tightly in your hand. Keep the faith and keep up with the carving.
I'm a 35 yr old man of average build and I can't do cuts like Doug either. He's a carpenter by trade (I think) and has hand strength that I'll never match hahaha. Also, he uses extremely sharp, thin blades. I just take more shallow cuts and get there eventually :)
As someone on the verge of beginning to carve, I find your videos to be so informative. This one answered a lot of my questions. I plan to watch every one of your videos and hopefully they'll guide me to success in carving. Thanks!
This is very well done, Doug. You gave a thorough but simple explanation of something that confused most of us when we started carving. Your most important quote-- "Every set will include tools you will never use." I always encourage people to buy individual tooles as they need them for their projects. Grow your tools as you grow your skills and experience. Thanks!
Great videos Doug! Thank you so much. As I am just beginning, I have been harvesting gouges from my local "secret tool store" where the proprietor and I have become friends and I get a decent discount on his supply of vintage tools. I cant wait to stop buying tools, and start buying wood!
Good video, lots of info! Thanks for the refresher! Slowly building my collection, the hardest part... finding tools locally. Web is great, but not every tool feels good in your hand. If it doesn't fit, you won't carve. Time for coffee...
Always wondered what your colour scheme represented. I also use colours because I don't have room in my tiny workshop to spread them out. I have a knife block style rack for my 90+ chisels and, I as I'm into electronics, my scheme is the same as resistor colour codes so I don't have to think what colour is what as it's already in my head! (ha ha). All the best with your carving adventure Mr D. and hello from a wet and windy UK.
Thanks Doug. I have learned so much from your videos. I bought some bark to try, but I am so scared I am going to flub it up!!! I know, I know, if I dont try I am not learning. Thanks again. You are a great teacher!!
Thanks Doug....... now it makes sense. 😂 Also liked the advice on painting 🖌️ on your last video. Looking forward to practicing. Thanks so much for sharing your talents. 😁🏴
Hey Doug, Great instructional video. What a great explanation of the gouges. Love your videos and I have learned to carve/whittle because of you. Happy Holidays to you and your family. I hope some day to meet you.
Coloring your tools, I use to do shotgun sports and I bought color coded chokes for easy pickings for different competitions, skeet, trap and sporting clays. Easy Peazzy, lol.
i had to go look to see if i could find the ones you didnt have i did find #4 and #6 but not #10 and#12 at Wood craft i also saw a #25 very interesting
Great thinking about having a color code system, To bad the tool people didn't do it permanently on their brand, and it would be better if all companies could copy the same color and make a standard code. Life can be easily done. Some might inlay a piece of color plastic for permanent marker Thanks
Thanks Doug. What knife holding system are you using on the walls? Hope you are getting some personal time to just enjoy your carvings. You give so much to us.
Great video - now I know. All the carving I did I made my own tools out of old saw blades. This kind of limited my ability sort of. To sharpen them I used emery cloth etc. What is your method for keeping them razor sharp ?
Buongiorno La seguo da 2 anni a questa parte e le sue opere sono delle piccole magie... Quando avrà tempo farebbe delle piccole renne un po' buffe? Grazie per la sua magia che ci dona
Hey Doug, I've been carving characters for a few years and I'm doing it more now than ever. My entire arsenal consists of a Mora 120, a Flexcut KN13 and two spoon-carving knives I've never used. What tool do you think I should get next, if anything?

Great video
i have a #12 (6mm). it appears to be a v-tool, but maybe just shy of a v---- i've never used this one yet.
the #12 atleast for pfeil is a 60 degree v tool
Great thinking about having a color code system,
To bad the tool people didn't do it permanently on their brand, and it would be better if all companies could copy the same color and make a standard code. Life can be easily done.

Thanks Doug. What knife holding system are you using on the walls? Hope you are getting some personal time to just enjoy your carvings. You give so much to us.
Looks like magnetic strips. You can get them at harbor freight
@ericwasson4255 thank you
Dammn Doug almost 300k subscribers this is incredible be happy and healthy! Are you a full timer now?
Great video - now I know. All the carving I did I made my own tools out of old saw blades. This kind of limited my ability sort of.
To sharpen them I used emery cloth etc. What is your method for keeping them razor sharp ?
I use the power strop kit comes with two wheels for a drill mount. Cheapest way to go if u want fast results
When sharpening your V tool, do you keep the endflat, or bring them back a bit at the bottom? I have seen both
that's different from the Sheffield list numbering system (uk) then as a number two is a skew chisel and the first curved is a number 3
Thanks for the video Doug , some visuals are hard to beat. Thanks. Do you have a sign on your door that says no kids allowed?😰🥴

Doug I think that not all manufactures don't use the same numbering system you might want to mention that or not just saying
