The stain I use is boiled linseed oil with a small amount of raw umber oil and mineral spirits. The mixture starts with one quart of boiled linseed oil; into that, squeeze approximately 1/2 burnt umber oil paint from the tube, add 25% mineral spirits. Then mix well.
this is the exact method that i have used for a long time now .there are several different methodes but i like this one the best , i like how it softens the colors and makes them less harsh and easyer to look at . also kind of antiques them . great instruction Van ,thank you !
Hi Van I live in Tasmania the Island state South of Australia, Wood Carving is not valued here as a hobby or an art form in Australia so much as Europe and America .So I want to thank you Van for your patience and teaching Once again Thank you so much to you guys who take time and effort to document this craftsmanship you are a great help. Thanks mate, Cheers Colin Australia
Forgive me, I'm a dunce..... But I do not understand the mixture... I know it's pinned at the top but to ME it's not clear.... ONE Quart of BLO... got that.... but squeeze 1/2 of a tube of Burnt umber oil....I CHECKED... THOSE TUBES COME IN DIFF SIZES!! So, what size do I take HALF out of? and 25% mineral..... 25% what?? 25% of a quart??
The Burned Umber tube, in the video, looks to be about 200 ml (7 Oz). It's for tint and grain highlight so, a precise amount is not critical. 25%, is 1/4 of your final mix. Or, a ratio of one part Mineral Spirit to three parts Linseed Oil.
I had problems in my learning months of using acrylics on carvings that the paint would lift with water based polyurethane varnish unless I let the acrylic mature couple of days. Then I found acrylic varnish and mixed some 30% with the paint colour which seemed to stabilise the paint and give a light sheen
Hi, can you recommend a varnish that will work if I want to seal any outdoor art from rain? I have some wooden sculptures I want to paint and place outside and need a sealent that will protect the paint.
Я не так давно занимаюсь резьбой, но мне этоочень нравится, может у вас будет совет для начинающих для выбора инструмента, так как я я скупил все что можно что можно купить у нас, но так и не нашел что хотел

I use the BOILED LINSEED OIL. Now I'll try your mixture. Thanks 😊

I believe he said one inch in the video. I use 5" of Raw Sienna.
Good idea
Thanks for sharing.

Ty Van 👍👍👍👍🍺😎
I’ll try this. I haven’t sealed any carvings yet. Thank you
I sometimes go back and re-dip some of my carvings after they have sat for years just to give them a fresh look.
What is the ratio of BLO to mineral spirits? Thanks
Pinned at the top.
Have you noticed any darking/yellowing of your older carvings? Great craving by the way!!
But… Do you use GESSO before painting ? I’m so new to this. Can someone answer me?
What kind of clear?
Had a question about the rags/paper towel, after they are completely dry is it still combustible?
Not as likely. I just always seal them in a bag before throwing them out.
