    This is the same thing Peter Chan has been doing for years too. Seems a good way for a nursery to keep control of alot of trees and then the customer can come in and do the refinement.

    Anybody who agrees with his method should look at those trees in Winter...and next to it you should place a tree pruned the japanese way...you will see the difference...

      I think that Walter struggled in this video to explain the full method he uses, but in another article he explains that after these 'hedge' cuts during the growing season, in winter he goes back and refines the tree further and carefully because he now has so many branches and many unnecessary one's with long inter-nodes or that don't work with the design. After this process in winter he then has a very refined tree with lots of ramification from the branches he has chosen to keep and refine, that would look as good as a tree pruned the japanese way. This method however promotes the health and vigor (horticultural aspect) of the tree because instead of being constantly pinched back, the tree is allowed to grow out, giving it much needed energy and strength.

    For anyone new to Bonsai - my understanding is that he is only taking off the long growth - cutting far away from any branches that he would think of keeping. This just saves a lot of time and shows you what's underneath. Go slow yet do what he's doing.

      Yeah except Peter doesn't do any refinement after this technique. Maybe because he doesn't know how or because he doesn't have time, or because it leaves the customer something to do

    • @Luckma1
      @Luckma1 Před 3 lety +1

      he uses wire too. After dropping all leaves in autumn he will select the branches he likes and cuts off what he doesnt want and then wires every few years or so (not sure about maples as it leaves scars easily but other deciduous species he does). Here you can see the different stages but this species is also a very very strong grower walter-pall-bonsai.blogspot.com/2020/12/oriental-hornbeam-64.html

  • @danielz6357
    @danielz6357 Před 4 lety +3

    This method works well, and I think is misunderstood because of the name 'hedge pruning'. The basic concept of the method for developing the tree and ramification is: to let the tree grow out and then cut it back; as opposed to continually pinching new growth.
    As Walter says, it doesn't matter how you cut the growth back (he has 1000's of trees so hedging them aggressively is quick and effective), just that you give the tree time to grow out before cutting back, which results in a healthy, strong and vigorous tree, as opposed to a weak and surviving tree through constant pinching. He says in other articles that once the tree is sufficiently ramified you can pinch for a season or two, especially if its going to go on show etc., but then to revert back to allowing it to grow and cutting back.
