    Great video and thank you for sharing this knowledge. Am I missing the link? Or just blind? You stated there would be a document or a list of trees you can do and shouldn't do this technique on.

    Thanks, that answered a few questions I had on this topic. A further question I have is that you're obviously using this technique on a refined tree. I have a number of tridents in early development. Do I wait until the trunk and primary branch thickness are at the correct proportions, etc, before I start doing this?

    I fully defoliated my 30 years old trident last May and it came back with smaller leaves. This spring all leaves came back to original size. Just be-careful and don’t defoliate every season because it can weaken the entire tree!

      I bought a 20 year old maple last year and this year the leaves are only growing on the ends of the branches. Don’t suppose you could offer some advice?

    Very interesting. I live relatively close in SW Virginia and get almost the same climate is you do. I have many Tridents, only three are of some age, ( two are about 15 years, one is about 12) .I'd like to try this, but every year I don't because I am worried that since my Tridents don't have the fine branch structure yours have, this isnt a good idea.

    • @kylepurvis6231
      @kylepurvis6231 Před rokem

      Hi, if you do some pruning back of the branch structure dining the defoliation process this will actually as he mentioned produce twice the fine ramification. Being where your located you should get 3 good flushes if you take full advantage and optimize the defoliation technique. You can rapidly create nice ramification especially on tridents as they are so vigorous. I’m a grower for the bonsai industry and time permitting try to do at least 2 defoliations each season on my stock. Give it a shot, Trident are super hardy you will not hurt them, and they always grow out!

    Does this technique apply to other maples like "Deshojo" as well?

    • @kylepurvis6231
      @kylepurvis6231 Před rokem

      Yes it’s applicable to most broadleaf deciduous species.

  • @2377shortie
    @2377shortie Před rokem +1

    Could you do this with a deshojo?

  • @tonimagery
    @tonimagery Před rokem +1

    How young can you start defoliation on these tridents? 1 or 2 year seedlings?

    • @tonimagery
      @tonimagery Před rokem +1

      @@goncalolopes4774 because they are getting longer shoots with bigger leaves and it is blocking light for the shorter branches

  • @renzokukenleonhart
    @renzokukenleonhart Před rokem +1

    What if you're trying to thicken the trunk? Will defoliation slow down the thickening process?

    • @kylepurvis6231
      @kylepurvis6231 Před rokem

      No, in actuality it can actually speed the process, by increasing the foliage mass, and keeping all the branches and foliage healthy the tree produces more energy, thus laying down more wood! I would only preform the defoliation of 80%plus once though, additional leaf pruning would simply be to maintain light and air flow, by thinning outer large leaves. If you continue to reduce leaf size you may slow trunk thickening.

    I love you, and I love your channel. Still, I'm a bit disillusioned with the Japanese approach to bonsai because I enjoy the unique expression of the artists when it comes to the design, but the Japanese approach leaves no place for that. They all look like a roundish triangle. Why is that?
