I'm a white African. My parents lived in Central Africa since the end of WWII and I was born there, grew up there. I too couldn't get the citizenship of the country I had put my roots in. The people from white origin were not given citizenship either. And with the first opportunity were expelled whenever the ( any) government wanted to show " resistance" to the white people. Although greeks were never colonialists and (with some exceptions always) were not racists, we had to pay along with the colonialists the price. I know it's reverse racism, a reaction to the racism shown by those who made these places a colony and exploited these countries. But the " price" was paid by whoever had white skin. I left and came to Greece for my university studies. Met my husband and stayed here. I still feel having one foot in the place I grew up and the other on the place of my ancestors I didn't go back to live in Africa even though my husband was open for us to go live there, exactly because of the insecurity. And I didn't want that for my children neither did I want them to be torn in two like me ... :( Same feeling with these guys. So, I just wanted to say that the white africans have similar problems in Africa than the black -greeks in Greece
As a person of Greek descent living in America, what i can tell you is the level of racial diversity in this country is a big cause of the political strife and unrest we've seen for a while now. Greeks have to be smart and not allow the level of migration to increase to the point where it severely changes the country's demographics, regardless if people who have an agenda are always screaming racism whenever they don't get their way. Greece was not a slaver of Africans or a colonizer. We were slaves to the Ottoman empire during that era. Greeks therefore should not allow themselves to be guilt-tripped into becoming a minority in their own country the way it is happening to the French, the Germans, the British and others due to guilt over past colonization or white Americans because of censorship based on white-guilt due to slavery American leftists are imposing on everybody.
@@bozeeke but whites are far from being minorities in thos countries, USA blacks (13% and declining), France blacks (less 3%), UK blacks (less than 2%), and these are the couuntries with some of the largest black diaspora. So no, it's just irrational fear of replacement aka racism.
I will not say kypseli is ‘the best’ destination in Greece but I believe it’s worth visiting. If you’d like to witness something different from beaches and archeological structures, then visit kypseli.. As a black tourist, I felt connected with the people. Thank you for this video 🙂
As a Kypseliot I enjoyed the video a lot but the title is a bit click-baity. Kypseli is most famous to greeks for its lack of parking spots and for being unsafe but that is not fair to the neighborhood. Kypseli is really central, has great bus connections to most of Athens and will soon get a metro station. It has a laid back lifestyle, has great food, diverse community and a very old theater tradition. It is not (yet) very touristic, as let's say Exarchia next to it which attracts a lot of alternative tourists. It would have been more great if you could have included some of the old Kypseliotes, who have experienced the transformations of Kypseli over the decades and some of the younger greeks who are now starting to settle in Kypseli despite the prejudice that mostly migrants live there. I expect to become very popular in the years to come. That being said, thank you for giving voice to the Afro-greek community, which much like the other communities with migration background (Russians, albanians,Indians,Bangladeshis,Pakistanis etc) may struggle to get citizenship.

I have stayed in Kypseli for 1 Week. People(who never been there) was telling me to be careful because is dangerous... We never felt that it was dangerous. We also saw young student-girls walking back home alone at night after partying. If one place is really dangerous you would never see something like this. Thanks it was a nice video

Greeks in general are hospitable, and they don't have any problem with foreigners/immigrants who want to leave here BUT I believe they could never consider them or their children "Greek". It's complicated.
Across Kypseli, down from Patission str. and close to Acharnon street, it is even worst...At least, the last years they' ve done some things in Kypseli area(that in - market, "pocket" parks e.t.c...).There are tavernas and cafes close to Fokionos Negri...
I was born in Kypseli in the late sixties but grew up in Glyfada. left as a teenager in the 80s and immigrated to the US. Recently I visited back after 38y and will be coming back for another visit soon, Kypseli is on my bucket list of places to visit! Very excited to see the diversity of different cultures in Athens and especially in my town of birth! Thank you for this video! And btw your Greek is very good 👍🏻
Ι don't have any problem with immigrants living in any part of Greece, as long as they are lawful and they don't try to change the basic culture, tradition and mentality of each city they live at. Of course they can practice their ancestor's culture as well
I rarely talk about other ethnic groups of people. We are all human beings I am sure there is space for some other nationalities in Greece bare in mind Greece or officially Hellas is the cradle of western civilisation a civilisation that begun 4000 years ago, the Greek Language is spoken since 1500 Bc which makes it the oldest alive spoken language in the WORLD! now I would like to remind that population is a little less than 11 million including immigrants. Greece has only experienced this wave since mid 90's and it is not something middle aged people and over can absorb this fact. The new fact that Greece is losing gradually culturally , linguistically, religiously it's homogenous appearance. With great respect to other nationalities living in my country we can coexist and we welcome them to assimilate our culture but if we over do it the dangers of changing our nation completely and seeing it no more as it has been for millennia is REAL and not an over exaggeration. Every nation has it's limit and Greece is at the borderline of simply becoming ALIEN. Do we want that? Outsiders may not care but it's non of their business.
You are very friendly towards immigrants because don't understand that this is a sinister agenda to change western nations' demographics. You live in a country that is still 95% European (and 90% ethnically Greek in your country's case) but that is changing and will have dire consequences for ethnic Greeks. As a person of Greek descent living in the USA, I've come to understand that racial/ethnic diversity is not a strength, but rather a serious, dangerous weakness. What is happening in places like England, Germany and France where the populations are quickly becoming Muslim migrant majorities and no-one can say anything without being punished because of a sense of collective guilt about past colonialization, or here in America where we are turning ourselves into a multicultural mix of different racial and ethnic groups with no majority group and are allowing it because of left wing white Americans' collective guilt about slavery, well this can happen to other countries in Europe like yours as well. It is important for Greeks to not be so welcoming going forward and whenever those with an agenda try to silence or censor you, proclaim clearly in large numbers that you were not slavers or colonizers (instead you were slaves to the Ottomans at that time) and you object to your country being overrun by foreigners. Otherwise, the same fate that is befalling people of European descent here in America will eventually happen to you too.

Sepolia has no relation to Kypseli; it was mentioned in connection to the larger Afro Greek community and the now-famous Antetokounmpo brothers who grew up in that neighborhood.

My God, what a load of crap! Kypseli is a downgraded area that suddenly some people try to pass as "cool" and "hip" because they bought property there at cheap prices and now want to increase their value. The truth is Kypseli is still downgraded, dirty and nothing special.
Κypseli is the most crowded neighbourhood in Athens that’s the reason why is downgraded. And the translation of its name describes it perfectly. Kypseli means Hive in English.

Come on....this area does not have any tourist interest and is one of the poor areas with very high percentage of immigrants (legal or not), not a very safe area to walk around especially at night time. It would be a mistake for any tourist visiting Athens to spend his time there. Why do you spread this false information? People will watch this video and will be misled. Even the Greeks from other areas avoid Kypseli, unless they have a good reason to go there.
One more documentary cutting off what the indigenous people have to say. What would they say if they were asked? About how multiculturalism was imposed against the will of the locals. About the criminality rates that are crazy. About the educational system that is being flooded by people who don't speak Greek and that means that children who already speak greek have to slow down. About the exploitation of the health system. About the sense of belonging and common culture that is being lost. About the fact that despite MC Yinka feels that this is an ideal world, it is not. Do I accuse for all the above Mr Kaluta and MC Yinka? Of course not. As human beings I respect them. I disagree with them politically though. For all the above I accuse the Greek governments that we have had since the mid 90s. Left, centre or right. Is this racism? Nope. I have not mentioned race. This is culturalism. I am talking about elements of culture that are being lost despite (or to be exact against) the will of the majority. That leads directly to the annulment of democracy in practice. That gives way to totalitarianism and populism. To anti-democratic sentiments. I am indigenous of Kypseli. So are my parents. So were my grandparents. The change is not for good. Kypseli is worse than what it was some 30-50 years ago. That does not mean that I have something against Afro-Greeks or whoever else. I grew up with them. But that does mean that i am alienated from the polity that we have since my point of view is systematically and deliberately excluded. What do I mean practically speaking? My home has been broken into twice in the last decade. That was unheard of in the past. I have to pay for private school for my kids since the level at public schools has become very low. I have to pay for private health since queueing in public health sector is inhumane. And above all is the feeling of (not) belonging. To put it simply. No problem with people of other race. Huge issue with the fact that the Greek governments never took into account their percentages and the will of the locals for a given cultural identity. We are not Americans. We are not a nation of immigrants. We are not British, we had no colonies, we have no moral obligation to accept people from ex-colonies. The fact that we are willing to help does not mean that we have an obligation to accept everyone or that it is everyone's right to obtain citizenship.
Although your video is really nice and pleasant, though the first thing you did is to interview Africans living in Athens? Really? It should be the exact opposite and then after you have spoken with the Greeks you interview some of the foreigners living in Greece. My God, what a load of crap! Kypseli is a downgraded area that suddenly some people try to pass as "cool" and "hip" because they bought property there at cheap prices and now want to increase their value. The truth is Kypseli is still downgraded, dirty and nothing special.
Κypseli is the most crowded neighbourhood in Athens that’s the reason why is downgraded. And the translation of its name describes it perfectly. Kypseli means Hive in English.
I live in kipseli and u are both wrong.In the chaos of athens kipseli has a strong community and love for our african brothers.Although of course u have to be careful is also one of the safest areas in the centre of athens

They presented the area as a dark ghetto! Now that property has changed hands at really low prices suddenly there is no problem with foreigners! Meanwhile Kypseli is still almost the same it was years ago, nothing special happened lately but the lies of real estate agents

Many friends that left Pireas went to other neighbourhoods knowing that living there is a nightmare in terms of parking spaces and of how much small the apartments were.

Great video, but not very realistic. Nobody in Kipseli pays to ride the bus.
Kypseli? Come on....this area does not have any tourist interest and is one of the poor areas with very high percentage of immigrants (legal or not), not a very safe area to walk around especially at night time. It would be a mistake for any tourist visiting Athens to spend his time there. Why do you spread this false information? People will watch this video and will be misled. Even the Greeks from other areas avoid Kypseli, unless they have a good reason to go there.

What would they say if they were asked? About how multiculturalism was imposed against the will of the locals. About the criminality rates that are crazy. About the educational system that is being flooded by people who don't speak Greek and that means that children who already speak greek have to slow down. About the exploitation of the health system. About the sense of belonging and common culture that is being lost. About the fact that despite MC Yinka feels that this is an ideal world, it is not. Do I accuse for all the above Mr Kaluta and MC Yinka? Of course not. As human beings I respect them. I disagree with them politically though. For all the above I accuse the Greek governments that we have had since the mid 90s. Left, centre or right.
Is this racism? Nope. I have not mentioned race. This is culturalism. I am talking about elements of culture that are being lost despite (or to be exact against) the will of the majority.
That leads directly to the annulment of democracy in practice. That gives way to totalitarianism and populism. To anti-democratic sentiments.
I am indigenous of Kypseli. So are my parents. So were my grandparents. The change is not for good. Kypseli is worse than what it was some 30-50 years ago.
That does not mean that I have something against Afro-Greeks or whoever else. I grew up with them. But that does mean that i am alienated from the polity that we have since my point of view is systematically and deliberately excluded.
What do I mean practically speaking? My home has been broken into twice in the last decade. That was unheard of in the past. I have to pay for private school for my kids since the level at public schools has become very low. I have to pay for private health since queueing in public health sector is inhumane. And above all is the feeling of (not) belonging.
To put it simply. No problem with people of other race. Huge issue with the fact that the Greek governments never took into account their percentages and the will of the locals for a given cultural identity.
We are not Americans. We are not a nation of immigrants. We are not British, we had no colonies, we have no moral obligation to accept people from ex-colonies. The fact that we are willing to help does not mean that we have an obligation to accept everyone or that it is everyone's right to obtain citizenship.
Children of LEGAL migrants always had the right to citizenship in Greece. Children of ILLEGAL migrants didn't, until 2015. Small correction there.
Although your video is really nice and pleasant, though the first thing you did is to interview Africans living in Athens? Really? It should be the exact opposite and then after you have spoken with the Greeks you interview some of the foreigners living in Greece. Imagine if i go for a trip to Nigeria and first thing to do is to seek out an American tourist instead of the locals...! I say this with the outmost respect of course. Cheers!

Kypseli is a terrible neighbourhood of Athens, much pollution,no space, old buildings. Greeks have moved from there many years now.

As a greek it is monumentally laughable that Kypseli is considered the best destination. What a joke. Probably one of the bottom 10 places in whole Greece. Always admire tourists for their ignorance. Imagine going to thousand of better places around the country.
