First thing it is a right hand thread. He was cutting Cast iron to drill the for cutting cast iron should be a carbide drill.
underrated feature: drilling holes on a vertical surface
Yep exactly what I was thinking
I have always felt that Honest reviews are better Both for the Manufacturer and Consumer, the Consumer knows what they are getting and the Manufacturer can use the info to make improvements
I thought you'd gone knuts for a min on the anvil...
The first time I used a mag drill for a truck chassis I was hooked.
Will check about their products on next purchases. Thanks for the review!
Having watched all of Andrew Camarata's container castle videos using evolution tools throughout, it's fair to say that they all definitely work. 👍
Great Channel!
And they don't break for no reason!
The “guard” is probably for cooling or cutting fluids to puddle in. Is drilling a flat surface it’d keep your oil all in one spot
Guessing the mag drill gard is for sharp chips or ribbons of steel.
As a new member to the fan club I could sense some humor coming with the anvil skit, well enjoyed. As an industrial electrician, been using mag drills for years and have looked at this to add to my collection. Far as the hole saws go, I would leave those for sheet metal and move to the annular cutter for any real metal with depth. One thing you left out that you might not be aware of, mag drills work great mounted vertically but need to have a way to chain them to the metal you're drilling incase the breaker pops or shuts off. Nice video, well informative and honest keep up with what you're doing and I'll be looking forward to the upcoming releases.
Thanks for your post. You scared me when you were set up on the anvil. Amazing how the saw cut through the rail. I have an Evolution 10" sliding compound miter saw. Love it. Great for cutting everything except for fine wood finish. Unless you can find a fine cross cut blade with a 1" diameter hole, I wouldn't recommend it for fine wood finishing. I also have an Evolution circular saw. Love it too. My advice on the circular saw: be careful of the material binding. Metal and wood grab differently. If you ever felt a circular saw grab because of the wood binding, then watch out when cutting steel with the Evolution. It doesn't just grab, it kicks like a mule and if you don't have a good hold will rip everything out of your hand. It felt like someone hit it with a sledgehammer. It's lightening fast. Probably why the spindle shafts are 1". A 5/8" would have snapped right off. I was lucky I didn't cut myself. Other than that, it cuts through steel like a circular saw through wood. I absolutely recommend the circular saw. Got it on sale at Canadian Tire $119.00 CDN.
Nice! I was just as impressed by the Hercules hole saws! That chop saw may be my next purchase!
Still binge watching!
Something you can use that track for is book ends to hold your manual up in your shop!
Do not get cutting oil on the steel you put the magnet on or broken wrists/arms will ensue. Ask me how I know.
Keep up the great videos! They make my day.
Very useful video, thanks.
I have both of those tools and they are amazing. The chop saw works flawlessly amazing cuts. On the drill I do not use the coolant tank at all I used oil in a can like you do. I like the diablo steel demon with cermet 11 carbide of all the blades I have used on all of my saws. I own the Milwaukee 8 inch hand saw 6370. I love it. I had looked at the evolution on their hand saw, but I went with the milwaukee. I enjoy your shows. thanks.
I knew a welder that work at the mill and he took a bigger pc. of rail, cut it and shaped it with a cutting torch and made it into an anvil. I was impressed. Have you ever made on like that?
You had me for a bit when you were going for the anvil! Gasp! Could have done some switching material behind the camera and continued drilling! LoL 😂😆
I had my doubts when you started cutting that rail! That definitely was a nice cut! Who would have thought there would be a carbide circular blade that would cut steel! I've cut aluminum on a table saw before using a carbide blade for wood with a mister for coolant.
Wood carbide blades seem to have a weaker carbide than steel cutting blades. Wood blades Work fine on soft aluminum, don’t last long on steel though
Cool. Too many other "content creators" don't pay enough attention to sound levels when they edit their videos. It is appreciated. 👍👍👍
Really enjoy and like your content, and your overall personality. I’m going to invest in some evolution tools now, because your character is trustworthy to me after watching all your videos!! Thanks!!
“My only complaint is,” I can’t wait till your next upload!!! Lolol
I love my evolution chop saw and have had the mag drill in my cart for a while just waiting for when I have the cash to pull the trigger on purchasing it.
You fucking GOT ME with the anvil, I was yelling at my TV "WHAT! NO! NO DON'T DO THAT!" You got me bad. +1.
I have the 10 inch Multi Cut Mitre Saw its Fantastic.
The real test is how well it sticks to say 1/8" steel as the mass on which it is grabbing plays a great deal in how strong it holds. I have often thought of getting a Mag drill but two weaknesses and my style of usage hold me off. I especially want it to do overhead work which is an extreme pain to drill but it has to have a no excuses positive grip on whatever it is stuck to. Another thing that is a bit of a drawback with many is the throat clearance (chuck to workpiece distance, or arbor to workpiece at times). You put a long attachment to it and many just are not going to fit especially if you add a drill chuck and a longish bit. For me most of what I am working on is angle stock, round stock and other rather narrow forms. Something the mag has a hard time getting hold of. Plop it in a piece of 2 inch angle and see how well it holds. So I end up with really needing it a few times and in most of those cases it will not work anyway. With a shop stuffed with both wood working and machining tools that is one that will just have to wait on the back back burner. A free one does alter the equation!! For six hundred dollars I just can't justify one. I would not be able to justify one of the three hundred dollar ones.
Thank you so much for saving the anvil!
The left hand thread makes sense to me looking at how you will operate it.
Use that drill to add some inspection ports to your boom lift in the right places to get a borescope camera in.
Evolution make excellent kit. We have saws and belt sanders, all well made.I’m working towards their EvoMag42. A friend uses his as a portable mill too. Top tip, only Evolution blades, others (more expensive) don’t work half as well.
Almost called 911 when you went to anvil lol. These are very handy drill with out question. Looked like it had a bit of run out but pretty good over all. Manet looked real good, very important mag won’t lift under drill pressure.
Woke up half the house laughing my ass off. I knew you weren't gonna drill into that beauty but you had me at the "he's not gonna actually do it ...is he?" point.
Que
"OH HEEELLLL NO"
I've been looking at this size Mag Drill.
I currently have Milwaukee's biggest unit. It's an awesome machine, but it has one big drawback, and that's it weight. I think it's around 80lbs. The weight is fine when it sits on top but sideways or overhead drilling is a big challenge.
A friend of mine has the metal circular saw and its a beast.
Nice demonstration of both the chop saw and the drill press.
Maybe 'Evolution' will look at this and make adjustments to the case so that people don't have to take the handles off to put the drill back in the case.
On a channel like yours, I don't mind this type of video at all. I view this as good information about a tool brand I'm not familiar with.
I’ve cut railroad track a few times with a quarter inch thick at a time , it’s absolutely amazing , I’ve done it with an abrasive saw , which is almost impossible, because an abrasive saw gets hot and hardens the steel , abrasive saws are hood for cutting light steel and hydraulic hoses ,,if your a serious steel fabricator , u need this tool
Maybe you can change the oil feed hose to one of those metal movable ones which you can direkt to your drilling spot, and it drip feeds directly to your drill? I can see it working nice with the attached oil can?
Bought a chop saw from them a few years ago for a fab project was happy with it. Was about $100 cheaper at the time of purchase.
great video as always
Great to see this. I am actually just looking for a new blade for my own 14" chop saw and wondered if the Evolution blades are worth the money. Seems to be really nice.
If you have a chance, checkout Project Farms review of these blades. The Evolution blade did pretty well.
Braking the crust on top of that rail was awesome. As a railroader who has peeled locomotive wheels, I know exactly how hard that steel can get. I wish the mag drill was rated up to 5/8 or 3/4 regular metal bits. I have a project right now that I could justify buying one tomorrow if it was.
In a practical sense, I can see the fence guard acting as a means to pool and corral the bit coolant plus it keeps the swarf from flicking around.
Question isn't the lock lever spring loaded? I was thinking that you don't need to remove the screw to reposition the lever. You just pull on the lever, reposition and then let it go.
Okay, you got me with the anvil. I could feel my blood pressure going up right until the cutaway! ;)
I guess the shield that you removed around the drill bit was to contain cutting fluid fling off and protection from swarf.
Just keep your Johnson away from those annular cutters.
I did notice that the slider was moving when you were bearing down hard with the 2" cutter. I'm guessing the LH thread is to try and torque it while pressing down, but it seems like it doesn't hold tightly enough to do that. Unless it's basically just a set screw, at which point I agree it doesn't make sense to be LH.
LOL; I was thining "wtf, that's a nice Anvil!"
Great stuff😊
I hope Evolution shows up and explains some of the features you didn't like!
Hiya. Yes, the annular cutters with the weldon type shaft are much better. The wobble is the combination of the chuck and the hole saw. I have a Hougen, and the annular cutters direct in the spindle are just amazing. Chuck is great for small holes and drill bits, but precision, extended working envelope, and bigger sizes come with removing the chuck and using direct insert annular cutters. No wobble at all.
JA, ya got me 😂. Hell nah get off my anvil. I went straight to the comments to see if anyone said something about drilling the anvil. Went straight back to the video when i heard the hell no comercial jajaja brilliant.
I honestly panicked when you went to drill the anvil I was thinking FOR WHAT REASON. as much as I trust your abilities I was genuinely worried there hahahaha you got me!
This looks so fun! All of my metal would be full of holes!
Morning John, I hope that you are well and getting better weather than us in the UK as our summer has turned out very wet just when farmers are trying to get all the crops in.
I really am impressed with this chop saw from evolution.
Do you know if they produce this for UK 240v?
Am very interested and am I too late to get the 5% off using your framcraft code?
Those are impressive tools!
Had an evolution chop saw when I was taking some welding classes at my local collage and fell in love with the things they were pretty good. That is until the highschool kids going in their after school program would trash the blades and end up having the fork out the money to buy new blades or drop out of the program for being stupid.
Very Cool Tool.
I reckon the left hand thread is so that the more pressure you apply when drilling, the tighter that lock gets.
Like the others who've commented about your anvil trick, I though, "Oh, no. He is NOT gonna drill a hole in that anvil!!!" Hahahaha. Good one!
I can see the drill clamp (the left-threaded-thing) slipping at @9:17 ... does it clamp tight enough?
As you and others have said
Needs water soluble oil and the correct cutter and will work like a dream as
You will probably use it with twist drills the most I strongly recommend a drip oil feed you will push the drills harder than you think and dabbing oil general will not be enough
Hahaha, I knew you were joking with the Anvil. Funny though :)
You totally had me with the anvil. I was coming unglued at that.
How about drilling hole in the ceiling and using cutting fluid with that? What do you mean it would pour all over the workshop?
The oil issue.. could the guard help out with that slinging oil issue?
You mentioned this is a paid promotion. Don't forget to update that setting on CZcams to indicate as much. That also helps make sure you don't end up with competing product ads etc.
Okay I'll admit you got me....I was saying "there is no F-ing way he is going to drill a hole in the middle of that beautiful anvil".....Lol. Nice.
left hand thread on lock keeps it from being interfered with by the bottle when being used.
That is impressive
Yeah, I was completely shocked that the Hercules hole saws held up. I use Horror Fright tools all the time, but always with the understanding that results may vary. I've had stuff that held up really, really well to some serious abuse. That said, anything absolutely mission critical, I'll go elsewhere for tools. Oddly enough, I've heard good things about their Hercules line, but I'm still cautious since you never know when they'll switch the manufacturing from good things mode to standard Horror Fright QC mode. Still, those hole saws doing that well kinda blew my mind to be honest.
The drill is very cool as well. I don't see me ever having a use for something like that, but I do like it a lot.
Oh that was so funny. I thought I was the only one who saw you about to drill into your anvil. I thought, this guy is crazy. He's about to ruin that gorgeous anvil. I had a great laugh and relief.
Maybe the left hand thread permits the screw holding the knob to be the "right" way in order to prevent someone from accidentally stripping the screw.
Maybe the Mag drill "guard" is more for the containing oil spin off ? 😁😁
Sweet. Good video
Receiving a free product to do a video is the SAME THING as being paid to do a video. You get $1,000 check or $1k in tools to do the video, it's the same thing. Changing the payment method does not absolve one of the possible problems inherent with getting paid to do a review.
Also, the lubrication system on the mag drill is designed to be used with annular cutters and would probably do better with actual cutting fluid (less viscous) as opposed to cutting oil.
Yep 👍
What happens if you are drilling horizontally, like on a wall, and there is a power outage, do you have to put a safety cable to hold the drill?
That guard is also going to act like a coolant/cutting fluid dam for making less of a mess/saving in fluid.
HAHA! The anvil. I was like, "Yeee...well, do people use dogs on anvils?" 🤣🤣🤣
Impressive
i wish you would have checked the run out on the chuck.
I just bought that same exact model chop saw. I noticed it has a lot of vibration only when cutting. Is that normal?
That's a nice "gift".
See if they'll give you the metal circular saw etc, too :)
Is cutting thru rust bad for a metal cutting blade?
will this work upside, or on stainless?
Good video mate good to see you stopped playing with your Johnson
Drilling thru the rr-tie with the 1/2" bit the drill looked to be flexing way too much for my liking
I bet the guard would help collect chips a bit when drilling on a vertical surface if you were concerned about them dropping. Maybe wouldn’t catch them all but it might help a little. - But the coolant system would not work!
My Evolution chop saw wanders like crazy, even when cutting thin steel. Even withe the material clamped stationary, the blade wanders.
Hahahaha that anvil scene was such a good applied psychology prank
Looks like there’s a lot of runout with the chuck. Even with a drill bit.
Jimbo’s Garage uses an Evolution metal chop saw
Love it
That anvil thought it would die that day, I saw a tear come out of it.
A bit of sweet talk, just randomly mentioning the circularsaw ;-) I think you have something coming in the mail one of these days.😀
I've used a evolution compound mitre saw cutting 4x2 box,I thought this is going kill the blade, flew though it 👍
Im not a metalworker but thought that drill speed rpm should be low when drilling metal, but that drills rpm is pretty darn high. Why is that ok? Looks like it works though.
Discount did not work on the 380CPS. I called about the out of square fence and they assured me that it is square to the blade. Hopefully that issue has been resolved. Big reason for my purchase. It is very hard to cut square and to correct length with an abrasive saw. As well as many other issues with abrasive. They did give me 5% off as a first time customer. Not much, but better than nothing.
Annular cutter vs hole saw is like day and night.
You scared me with the Anvil lol
HAHA, I wanna gonna lose it if you drilled that anvil!
Left hand threads grip tighter...last longer...jump higher...run faster...
Perfect miter saw.
I think the locking mechanism is "backwards" because they designed it with the idea that you're standing behind the handle in mind - which as we've seen is pretty silly. You're going to be on the business end of the drill, not behind it, to monitor the work and make sure the drill is staying on center.
