  • The plaintiff met the defendant in second grade, and they were best friends. Years later, the defendant moved in with the plaintiff and allegedly failed to pay rent, so the plaintiff is suing. The defendant insists the plaintiff was jealous of her lifestyle, and she claims she babysat the plaintiff’s children in lieu of rent. Therefore, the defendant says she doesn’t owe anything.

      I feel like she was at her breaking point. You know how hard it is to tip toe around someones house when you know they don't want you there? Just using you for a babysitter? She did right by just leaving. That girl was getting over on here big time. But because she is a bit louder she thought the court would reason with her because she thinks she is better and her story is more sad smh

I guess I’m just confused because in prior cases, people have had the same defense and judge Mathis would say “if there wasn’t an agreement it doesn’t matter” and then again that’s why I think at least 1 month would’ve been sufficient bc of her failure to legally give a 30 day notice. She didn’t pay for months so the defendant at least deserved that 🤷🏽‍♀️

      Exactly. Judge Mathis sometimes just jumps to conclusions. In middle and highschool there was a girl who was far more popular than me and had more friends and she was always trying to bring me into things I did not care about to make me look bad. I’m assuming she just hated I was above highschool crap and somehow I wasn’t popular but literally knew everyone.

    I really loved the plaintiffs energy and vibe! The defendant on the other hand definitely took advantage of her best friend probably bc she felt like her best friend owed her from the past. I am very glad both ladies are doing well and are in their own crib doing well in life bc there's no place like your own home😉

    JM shouldn’t have dismissed her case. Even if that was the agreement, it was only until the defendant could get back on her feet. JM should have questioned where she got the funds to move out if she wasn’t working, that alone says she had money somewhere that she could have paid the plaintiff towards rent

    I completely disagree with the judge. Just because someone has a lot of friends and gets a lot of attention doesn't mean they don't crave more. Think of celebrities, no one gets more attention than they do. However some pull stunts for even more publicity.

    It makes sense that someone staying with you for free doesn't give a 30-day notice because they are couch hopping, not a tenant. I had a friend sleeping on my couch leave within 24 hours, when I suggested that she should go to her dad's house. I sure didn't need or want 30 day notice. You don't live here. This is a pit stop. This lady should have told her friend that she was leaving though especially since they were friends and she was helping with babysitting.

    The defendant should’ve had to pay simply because she was essentially the live-in caregiver of the child. Moving without notice changed the terms and now the plaintiff has to quickly find alternate childcare which could be a hardship. The plaintiff did not present her case well enough but the defendant was wrong for just leaving like that. Whether or not she was paid fairly doesn’t matter because she agreed to it.

This woman moves in, pays $300 in prorated rent, doesn't pay another dime the entire time that she lived there, manages to save enough to get her own place, then moves out with no notice. Thus judge, who thinks he's King Solomon, offsets what she owes with babysitting for three hours three days a week?!!? That is inequitable on its face! Another bad decision by JM.

So because they had a verbal agreement and she watched her son a few hours out the week she deserves not to be paid ?! Doesn’t make sense.     I have provided a lot of babysitting and caregiving for my five sisters' and was not compensated. There are at least two dozen nieces and nephews who I have repeatedly baby sat for. They didn't pay me. I don't know why mothers believe that they shouldn't pay for sitters' work? As if we don't have a life to live. WE DO!! It is no reason to think we're just itching to babysit their children. I finally learned to say "No" to them. Let them pay for it from someone else--not me.

    This was the right verdict. Even at the most generous rate per hour, as Judge Mathis said, 48 hours of child care a month will add up; with her amount thst easily equals AT LEAST $1k in child care. Not only was the rent offset, the plaintiff would have paid way more if she hired a nanny or sent her kid to daycare for that amount of time every month.

    It doesn't matter that she babysat for her, if they didn't agree that the babysitting would go towards the rent, she's doing it for free. It's sad that JM's rulings are based on feelings, not evidence. Jealousy also isn't always a bad thing, people can be jealous/want your life because it looks better without harming you.

    The judge was totally wrong in this case. The “friend” was a user and she was the jealous one. I don’t understand the judge sometimes when he acts like this. Especially when the plaintiff was trying to help this girl.

    The daycares where I live charge almost $250 for 3 days a week for ONE child . Why would she expect the defendant to watch her multiple kids for 4 hours for 3-4 days a week for free ?

      How about now she snuck out and left her to scramble and find a replacement for child care with no warning! The defendant is trash! She blocked her number cause she had the money. The plaintiff just didn't do a good job presenting her case, if she had of came from the childcare angle, and how it impacted her, she would have least gotten something.

    I don’t understand why some ppl said JM got it wrong. He had it right, she let her know her situation how she couldn’t pay rent, they came to a resolution to watch her kid instead of the rent. If I was the defendant I leave too I wouldn’t have gave a 30 day notice but as a friend I’d let you know I’m leaving. kinda foul to block “your friend” but the plaintiff just take it as a lesson don’t move your friends in 😅

    I agree with the verdict... by the plantiff admission the defendant babysitting her kid for 12hours a week, which is 48 hours a month. in some cities they get paid 17.50 a hour.. $758 a month..it was enough to pay the rent..

    Poor judgement!! her living there was never for free. She never asked her to pay her because she is watching her child?? The baby probably slept till 10/12 when the mom gets home still have to do everything!

    When the plaintiff lived with the defendant's family, did they get financial assistance. Now the defendant' had a need to live with the defendant and she wanted to sue the defendant.
    Where is the compassion towards the defendant.

    The plaintiff is greedy. She acting high and mighty about giving her space to live, but quick to want rent money. The defendant moving out right away rly was a good decision. Avoided all the toxic drama and better chance to repair friendship.

    Y’all don’t listen. She OFFSET the rent in exchange for child care. Meaning she preferred to pay $475 for childcare that would cost almost $2,000 instead of receiving rent payment.

    The defendant should have paid at least one month's rent for failing to provide notice. Also, I'm sure it was hard for the plaintiff to find a new babysitter for the child at the last minute.

    Judge, I'm really surprised that your verdict . you are normally a very fair man. Or should I say excuse me a very fair judge. Why you disagreed with the plaintiff? I really don't understand just because she watched her child. That was just her way of helping out but she really was putting her money under the rug so she could move out. So she used her so that's what the judge should have said! I'm still proud of the girl who made it out of the shelters in one piece and really has a pretty nice or should I say a very good head on her shoulders. More power to you sis 💝

    If I had a crib and was able to pay my rent and bills with no help, and my friend who took me in when I had nothing needed a place to stay, AND willing to watch my child, I wouldn’t even have asked for rent…you helped me when I was down now it’s my turn to help you is how I would look at it. You would have had to pay for a babysitter costing you way more than 500 a month so it’s a win win. This not a random new friend, this your friend since childhood days who took you up out that shelter and held you down. But everybody ain’t solid like that

      The friend didn’t take her out of anywhere their parents had an agreement the friend didn’t do anything she was living w her parents as well, as a child. If she really needed somewhere to stay why not go to her parents, the same parents who took a friend in🤷🏾‍♀️

For an example YOU would leave your friend hanging and tell them go stay with their parents and that shit ain’t real no matter how you put it‼️Living with your parents as a child is way different than having to live with them as an adult and that’s fucked up to say if she really needed somewhere to stay go stay with her parents when she was once homeless and had to stay with that same friend!! The parents wouldn’t have done that for a complete stranger, they did it because it was their daughters friend‼️otherwise the mom wouldn’t have had to stay in a shelter she woulda been invited to stay there too! Make it make sense 🧐

Why not tell her she’s moving out? Why not say “I’m getting my own place” her friend would b happy for her right? Where’s the miscommunication, what’s the purpose of her being so discreet she was extremely reticent. She moved out quick & secretly & blocked her friend as soon as she did so..in my opinion I think she blocked the friend bc of her guilty conscience she felt she was wrong. If the parents were so helpful & let the friend move in what’s the issue with their own child staying home until they can get their own? She’d for sure b able to save her money and get her own if she’s living home w her parents, right? How would you feel if you let a friend move in with you rent free, responsibility free & not only do not have the decency to tell u but they dip out on you after you did them a favor & they block you as well as if you wronged them

Do you truly THINK if her friend gave her the same loyalty back when she needed it (giving her a place to stay now that the roles switched) she woulda left without notice ? NO . She only left like that cause she didn’t feel girl was being solid n you can’t tell a mf how to react when you realize the loyalty was one sided ‼️after we helped you at your worst, years later I needed a favor and in return I watched your kid and still helped out with shit around the house , if I’m in a fucked up situation trying to get on my feet taking from me ain’t helping me ! Help me like I helped you PERIOD . She felt some type of way about how girl was treating her now that she needs a hand n that’s why she didn’t update her on shit that was going on she started feeling like “yeah this ain’t my real friend I’m straight on her, just wait till I move” type shit
