Efren Reyes and Torbjorn Blomdahl play an interdisciplinary billiard challenge of 10-ball and 3-cushion billiards in NYC.
Mazin Shooni and Robert Raiford provide the commentary.

A lot of billiard players that Efren Reyes beat did not know that he is good at carom billiard too.And that is the real advantage "The Magician" has over them. Incorporating carom in his games makes them look Efren as just lucky. Its is not luck, it is skill.
That's why he played one pocket so well.

Although Reyes is known for pool, carom was the more popular cue sport in Philippines at one time (used to be called 'karom bola' or Carom with balls to differentiate from 'karom' another pocket table game that used pucks). He would've probably grown up playing this more than pool in the 60s.

Carom is a different animal comparing to 9 or 8 ball.
If you're from the Philippines, it's called 'karambola'. It was more popular than pool before the 70s. Efrem would've probably played more of this as a kid before the switch to pool.

When i was younger i played 3 ball with some Vietnamese fellows. My pool game was unstoppable after playing 3 rail billiards.
After my lesson videos on the fundamental and basics of pool I was thinking about turning my head to 3 rails. I feel like that would take my level playing to a new level.

I’ve always thought 3 cushion billiards meant 9 ball pool except that you have to do a 3 rail kick shots for every ball before you pocket them.
@Caden Lopez so basically there is white yellow and red ball white and yellow for each of the opponent and they have to touch either the enemy's ball or the red ball and they have to hit the rails 3 times or more to touch the opponent or the red ball then you get a point

Not true, he first started on 15 ball filipino rotation, which he claimed that during 1973-76 he is so strong in the ph no one would play him so he stopped playing that for 5-6 years and instead play carom and the like
No it's not!! It's because he started to play pool at the young age of 8 and if you know his story, there is a certain times that he make the billiard table as his bed. .

I went to a pool hall in San Jose, California a couple of years ago with a friend. We wanted to shoot some pool. We entered,
and it was a room with about 8 tables, 3 of which were for pool. The rest were for 3 cushion. The people in this hall looked
to be Asian, and I'm guessing Vietnamese, I didn't ask, and it's kind of fuzzy in the memory. The pool tables weren't being used,
and we were probably a rare sight, wanting to shoot pool. The pool tables were in poor condition, with one of them looking like
the roof leaked on it. The cues were caked with human grease. The place was run down, and had the look of a business set up
to launder money. I've gone to 2 pool halls in San Jose, and they are not places you'd want to return to. When I was a kid,
pool halls were kept in good repair. The other place had mostly pool tables, but the cues were caked with human grease, and
the atmosphere seedy. I took the furniture out of my front room and bought a pool table, but it's difficult to get pool players
because it's just not played in this part of the country anymore, seemingly. I could be wrong in my impressions, but I'm old enough
to remember when it was different.

How to play this game?i think the cue ball will hit the 2 balls at the same time to score..
Hit the first ball and then the mother ball needs to bounds in the cushion 3 times before hitting the 2nd ball. If the 2nd didnt hit after the 3 cushion bounces, its a bad shot.
Efren was the Only person to win world champion in 2 pool discipline.

It's basically 3 cushion carom shot. You can use any balls as your cue ball. You must hit 3 cushions after making contact with the 1st object ball before hitting the 2nd ball. Sorry if it's a bit unclear
@@rymundozss1366 the red ball is not a cue ball, the only you can hit is the white ball or yellow ball.
You cannot use red ball as cue ball. The red ball is the target otherwise

White and yellow can be use as cue ball. The rule is after hitting the 1st object ball, you need to hit 3 cushions/rail before hitting the second 1.
This is called 3 cushion carom that's why you need to hit 3 cushion, other carom game can be in minimum of 1 cushion carom

Cue balls should hit both balls, last hit should bounce on the rail very simple

@@atit4096 Once you hit the 2 balls after 3 cushions minimum you get one point and you go on, otherwise it's your opponent's turn to play. The best players during tournaments are doing averages between 1 and 3, meaning they make a between 1 pt and 3 pt in a row for each run they play. Records run are around 18-20 in a row I would say, but i'll let you guys fact check that ! The usual games are won by the first player reaching 40 points (UMB rules in general but there's variants on which I wont go into detail here)... btw Blomdahl just won the world championship yesterday, a great come back for him!

For the vast majority of people it's not. 3 cushion is really really hard 🙂
There are systems out there for most shots that the high level players start to incorporate intuitively. The funny thing is, if you use the proper English, a large variety of angles will converge around the same spot after the 3rd rail. And for many shots the ball is positioned where you can play it going off an extra rail or especially 2 out of the corner with the right speed and English such that it reverses off the final rail and has a large window of success. The hardest part about getting to the good player stage is learning to stay out of kisses. The advanced part is position play where you keep balls near corners and often hit softly off the final contact to keep the balls close but not too close that you're stuck behind it. The other part of position play is strategically trying to leave bad position (safe) for the opponent when you are taking on a shot you aren't confident in. Interestingly Efren is a much better player at that, but it's more stylistic. Torbjorn is a hyper-aggressive point scorer and is going to disregard position when playing with speed helps score the point (e.g. as a way to avoid a kiss or in the 7-rail shot where he knew he could get the contact if he made it to that first corner)

The Guy its kinda easy... when two people play each one picks the yellow or white ball,the aim is to make your ball touch the other two in one shot. Theres a rule or a variation where you have to hit 3 bands (sides) before touching any other ball
With a 10' by 5' no pocket table (may be smaller but same proportion), one white ball; one red; one yellow, and a cue stick.

I kinda get the mechanics of this game and the degree of difficulty but who won this match? Carombola is definitely a good way to hone skills in order to master 9 ball.

+David Marino Pocket games is easy. You do not know what you talking about. 3 Cushion game is the maximum skill what you can earn . For example, pocket players, can not play 1 or 2 or more cushion perfect, they are fail, just fail, They are unskilled on cushions shots and using dirty jump shots. This is below level. 3 Cushion is Royal game dude, just for real kings. If i playing 9ball with pool players, and ball position allow Cushion shot around the table, im all time try score 9 to pocket by 3 cushion shot. Efren Reyes is PRO so he know playing 3C,good for him,nice to see strange pool power shots on Carom table. Efren Reyes is not nuub like you ! The famous 3-4 cushion shot Reyes did against Strickland after he snookered himself, many people say "pure luck". But actually because Reyes is a very decent 3 cushion player, he has a better chance than most to execute these shots at 9 ball. Moreover this is why he became a master at kick shot: his billiards skills.
Well said. I like all kinds of pool (us 8 ball/straight pool, snooker, billiards) and think that people who are in favour of one kind and diss the others (eg billiards vs pool or snooker vs pool etc) are a bit narrow minded for sure :)

I’m surprised at 1:49 that Efren went the long way instead of short rail off the white on the inside. The angle was perfect for that shot. Plus, there’s no kiss and also position play. But then again, this isn’t his game of choice.

@@ryanturner8423 Not sure I understand your question,, but if you’re asking do I think Efren would have won because of that one shot I recommended? Of course not. Efren is at a huuuge disadvantage no matter what he does against blomdahl . But with the shot that I said he should have taken, he could have extended his run. And if he would have missed, he would have left blomdahl safe.
