So glad that the R3 is still a top performer.
I swear my R3 was better than my new R7. And the 3 isn't as big as a brick either.
The R3 is definitely the best value detector out there.
@@jasonpatterson2143 I was worried about the same thing but the guy I sold my R3 to was riding to work on the same road with me one morning and we had a police radar vehicle with a constant on signal about a week after I sold him the detector aimed at us. I talked to him when we got to work and asked him where he picked up the radar signal. He said on top of a bridge about 4.5 miles from the radar car. I picked the signal up a couple hundred yards before I got to the bridge, approximately 5.2 miles away under much tougher circumstances. Ground level 5.2 miles versus R3 on top of a 100 foot bridge at 4.5 miles. The R7 with it's larger antenna(s) is more sensitive and to me was worth the money difference. But the R3 proved itself many times on that same road for over 18 months saving me a couple times a week. Great detectors both.
My R3 has false KA alerts and I have no idea how to fix it. Very annoying as KA is typically real
@@MrKevinritsema Try rdforum, alot of people there can help you make the R3 more quiet.
Road Scout: me getting pulled over by the police, I gives him my information he runs it comes back gives me the ticket to sign then my Road Scout goes off🤦♂️
🤣
lmao
Accurate. Wait for the K results. ☠️
The officer shakes his head in shame when he sees you using a cobra detector.
Same results I had with my Solo cordless. It started going off as the cop was walking up to my car. Maybe he had his radar gun in his pocket😂
19:42 The look of stern disapproval.
That's the all-time greatest reaction!🤣
Great video, again. Thank you so much. I got the Uniden R3 because it was mentioned in the CanonBall Run and because you reviewed it; I got mine in Jan 2021. The best signal from a Ka I have obtained was 2 miles away, around a bend in the highway, that reflected off a semi-trailer. Then the signal stopped, they were using an instant ON radar gun. I am extremely fascinated by this detector. Keep up the good work on your videos.
Recently was coming back home from Austin, TX and driving along I-10 E.
Texas state troopers sure loved using Instant on Ka band right outside of Katy/Houston. Thankfully my Uniden R7 picked up Ka band alerts from the other cars they were targeting waaay far ahead!
Long range detection of instant-on with a detector like the R7 is key for survival. I have no doubt that most state troopers have perfected their technique for picking up someone's speed almost instantaneously with instant-on. Your chances of picking up I/O in advance are much greater around Houston where the traffic is heavy,; but in west Texas with light traffic, I/O is deadly. Every Texan knows about Sonora being a speed trap.
@@MrSgtau Small towns in texas in general are speed traps lol. Going through Eagle Lake to take the back way to I-10 always has a cop camped outside the buccees.
it worked out, traffic was semi-dense going back into houston because of the construction. figured the guy/gal was definitely running instant on Ka band because I'd get a weak alert for a second or two when I was further away, then it would go away. Then as I got closer, they tagged me too and my Ka band alert went off at full tilt, then stopped alerting as I passed them.
My Bel Vectors always reached out . Mounted up off the dash on windshield below mirror. No way a detector works best on dash. SMH
Myself, I'm a Valentine guy. But I have recommended & given as gifts Uniden LRD/DFR series detectors. Glad to see they made honorable mention. Kinda surprised Rocky Mountain outranked Escort Redline 360c, but I did notice your (entirely correct) comment. That was a lot of work, thanks for doing that.
You get a like for being a fellow Valentine user 😎👍🏽
Damn can I be your friend during Christmas?
@@shafto.6648 That's funny! I have 3 sons & a son-in-law, they are the 4 who got the detectors as gifts, and, indeed, for Christmas. Unfortunately, I only have one daughter & she's married.
@@isaacarnold4635 Family isnt just blood. I'm available for adoption and I come with all my shots. 😂
The face was priceless after the cobra radar test 😅
00:48...."Yellow Eye?" We don't want to know.
Nice video. When I lived in NC, Instant On was my tormentor.
He's a member on RDF
Yeah some of the NC State Troopers here are I/O ninja's.
Now where'd I leave my MelloYello....
The multiple signals on the R7, V1 and any others is being created by reflections of the source signal from objects at a different distance from the radar gun plus the 2 antennas in the detectors. In truth, the detectors are actually receiving multiple signals be it from the same gun. That is a good thing actually. That is an indication of extreme Sensitivity. One of the reflections from possibly a closer object reflecting the signal could actually be the initial detection.
Similar (or basically) the Doppler effect?
Your work is always so professional. I love your videos.
Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to do these tests and edit these videos for our benefit. Your work means a great deal to me and I would to acknowledge your work and applaud you as well. God Bless you.
Thank you to the 2 of you for putting in the work.. love my G2
Given how most leo capture speed measurements, this is the MOST important test for a radar detector. Would like to see the focus on this more on the future to also include different bands. 👍
Super insightful video. Thanks, Vortex!
I am surprised that the Batman radar detector can outperform better than those Cobra.
Yea that surprised me also, I start laughing every time he brings that Batman detector out 😂🤣😂
Vortex is the top countermeasure authority extant. Surprised Escort didn't produce quicker response times. But I need the Max360 for the MRCD robots here in Maryland.
Sleeping Beauty prevajls!
Love the video as always!! Love how u double check results.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS ONE!! My R7 is awesome!
Just did a road trip of 1,000 miles worth of fearless flying with my R7 and the cruise locked at 90mph (traffic and conditions permitting) and made it home ticket-free.
Keep up good honest reviews...hats off🙏🙏
Education is always the best defence. Great video
Great video thanks for all the work in pitting this together. I recently have seen the new cobra detectors and was wondering about it.
Excellent work! Damm and I just bought a radenso sp as a 2nd detector. It is good to know it’s weakness. One thing I will test with my radenso sp is if quick trigger on the radar will go undetected by the detector, or if it is just a delayed response.
Update: I've since gone back and retested on Ka with the manufacturer cables with different detectors. It didn't improve performance. You can check out my Ka retesting results here: www.rdforum.org/threads/111273/
I got mine base on your earlier reviews, I have to say that my Uniden R3 is fantastic for the price. I got a refurbished one for 30% less new. This little thing does not fail me every time it's on. Moreover, updates are a breeze to do. I never had even one issue. Ka works like a charm. I can't see myself getting anything else.
Just bought Uniden R3 few days ago.. we.went to Pheonix from Tucson and my dad was amazed.. we caught a Police right before it merges on the freeway ramp on I10
The Radenso Pro-M is the radar detector I regret buying most. R3 and R7 smoke it.
It makes me wonder what the times of the new Theia will be like.
@@darthvillarious And the semi conductor shortages r effecting Theia, Redline 360C and R7 now. It sucks!
@@mikekuhn214 I would hope that our politicians finally realize that relying on China for EVERYTHING is a very,. very bad idea, but I don't think they have or are being bought off to keep the status quo.
Watched and liked, thanks! Enjoying my R7 while I wait for Theia. I know it might be quite a while because of part shortages though.
As *ALWAYS*, great job Vortex. Thanks for the education. :)
great video and testing!
Excellent comparison. I am looking for a good unit and most of my driving is from Washington State to Arizona, so all the info I can get will help with the best unit.
This is fantastic, and very practical, thanks. Instant-on is what cops use in my location Cali/Nevada border. I hope you do similar testing on some older radar detectors to compare if new tech is better than old. Say old Valentine vs New. As you said better filtering as in newer radar detectors may slow down the response time.
I would have, but my old V1 is out on loan, sorry.
@@VortexRadar Great stuff you did here.
V1G2 FTW! 💪🏾
Edit: And that Vortex is why I sold my Road Scout 😂.
Mike Akins (BossDad on rdforum) tested it against IO and it failed BADLY!
Yeah I’m really glad he tested it too. These results are crazy…
@@VortexRadar They are indeed (the results being crazy), for an "Elite" line detector I and everyone expect better results. The DualPro 360 is the only good Cobra detector, the Road Scout with some tweaking and updates (on performance) could be a good product in the future. I checked your review on the Scout and agreed with all your points. I had an issue with mine where it would sometimes randomly stop recording.
When me and Mike tested the Road Scout, it was pretty deaf on I/O shots, the DP 360 was good though
@@392nightrunner Yeah, even his bench testing showed the RS was awful with IO. I legit exchanged it for the DP360 after seeing Mike/BossDad's testing.
Maybe you can do a test with detectors that read speed cameras.
Good job!!
The Cobra's response is measured in minutes.
Use a calendar
You call them claps, I call them baby sharks. 🦈
🤣
What distance are you testing from the radar gun, thanks
Thanks, very informative! I'm disappointed in the I/O performance of the RL 369c, I own one.
Another great video!. I'm curious as a non-user, what value is it to know the actual frequency?
I upgraded from
The ixc, to the Uniden R3, to the Uniden R7... I sold my friend my R3 after like 7-9 months and boyyy it saved his TAIL today. ALEA (Alabama law enforcement agency) had the ugliest speed trap that involved a trooper sitting on an overpass using LIDAR and it set off BOTH MY R7 and iXc on a Laser alert at the same time.
Love your work and effort - thanks.
Let's see how an R3 fares in Japan...
Nice Cobra comedic edit cut there! 😂
lol 😄
As someone who was a very long-term Escort customer, I've never been happier with having become a V1G2 owner. In combination with JBV1, it's simply unbeatable.
Can you compare the Uniden's with the current, and previous firmware? The arrows not working properly have made this radar useless. I enjoyed the Autolockouts, but it was not enough for me be without (reliable) arrows on my R7.
Thank you!
Thank you for testing out these detectors for IO. I recall RDs being called sleeping beauty when they did not respond to IO. I believe one of them was the Redline. I also recall one individual who did a video showing how some detectors did not respond based on the quickness of the IO. Do you recall that video? And are there any detectors today that might miss an IO hit?
I saw two detectors do that on K band
What is name of the power supply you are using to power the detectors at home?
I’m guessing after this test Escort will send out v1.9 for the Redline 360?
REALLY disappointed with the Redline 360C. Question for you regarding RD placement: would having the unit's placement basically on the dash in lieu of mounting them higher say around the rear view mirror affect the unit's detection time?
No
That was awesome 👍
On the V1 G2 shown multiple (3) radar sources (@ 8:10), could that be the signal bounced off from near-by parked cars/signs?? Also, I had came across something as this yet the V1G2 immediately displayed "J" (Junk signal), what does that mean anything besides ignore - LOL ?
Great videos and information again and again! Thank You!
Great video! I’m glad that I got myself an R7! If you get hit with instant on is there actually anything you can to do avoid a ticket or is it already too late and just notifying you that you have a ticket if you’re over speed?
I'd gradually slow down without causing the frontend to dip showing your hand and causing the PO to target you
Hopefully your RD will have sniffed out the I/O shot on a vehicle way out in front of you and the brief alert wasn't ignored.
I've noticed the arrows on the R7 has been working great since they were released, but as it gets updated over time, the arrows starts flipping back and forth more often. Software issue?
Yep, latest update adjusted how they react. Hoping the next one fixes that.
Very disappointed in the redline. My old one makes a racket but has saved me from instant on many times, even when I was the only car. Id appreciate a test of various Ka segments to see the improvement in reaction time . Great job!
I am too. I almost bought the R360c, glad I went with the V1G2 instead.
The old Redline M3, once it got BSRDR in 2012, was every bit as quick and sensitive to IO Ka as the Gen 1 V1. In fact, an old RX65 on USA Mode rarely missed a shot as well.
Sleeping Beauty prevails!
@@normt430 no, that was the original Redline before BSRDR. Once added, it became the benchmark for a half a decade. Dethroned by the Uniden R1/3 , but even today it’s still a monster on Ka.
@@alexnutcasio936 So what is the best? The R3 or the Redline, I ordered a redline but may have to cancel it.
Still 💜ing my DFR9. 😁👍
IO KA is deadly. With lidar there’s a defense with parking sensors. With Ka IO there is no defense.
No one is as complete as this fine gentleman. How’s the baby? Getting big I bet.
Have you rerun the real world test for the V1G2 with the V1 power cable?
Love seeing real A to B test. Actual measurements cut through hype. Was disappointed in Escort's performance. Before your test results was looking at the 360. Won't be better than the higher model 360c. Would be after a Valentine but it seems to like the companion app that only runs on Android. Which I don't use. May look into the Uniden R7 instead.
BIG LIKE FOR THE VIDEO, from Romania
Reaction time on Escorts have been really neutered for a while. Going all the way back to the M4s. I can slip QT shots all day and get speeds without Escorts chirping a bit. The only exception to this would be a old M4 with Ka turned off, then it sees the fastest K shots. They have really turned down the reaction times to avoid false alerts, but it's a detriment to the driver if the officer is running QT
You’ll rarely slip a shot by the RX65 S7 and that’s twenty year old technology.
@@alexnutcasio936 Yeah the good old S7 on Bel was lighting fast. Not so much on the Escort variants. I had nothing but calibrations problems on my Escort S7 8500
@@NKaumans my Bel S7 is still lightning and I can’t slip a shot by with my Stalker nor K band gun. You’re talking something old.
In this video, you mention having a WiFi Hotspot in your car. Is that a standalone unit or are you using a Hotspot on your phone? I ask this because I recently purchased a V1 Gen2 and plan to use the JBV1 app; however, I am a committed Apple product user (iPhones, iPads, MacBook, Apple TV - they all integrate so nicely) and the JBV1 app is not available on iOS platforms. Do you suggest tethering to the Personal WiFi Hotspot on my iPhone, paying for an additional line with my carrier, or getting a standalone WiFi unit such as a Jetpack offered by Verizon to operate my Android phone?
I prefer a standalone option over tethering. czcams.com/video/BNVFvs4Vx7U/video.html
Would the V1 12v outlet have different or inconsistent rating that direct wire to the fuse box splitter?
👉 This.
I have a V1 G2 and I'm disappointed by the results. It was expensive AF. It is well built though (magnesium case) which handles heat well
@@petbull7038 the Ka-band range is best in the business!
@@normt430 It's saved me many times. And most police use KA in my city. What I meant was I'm disappointed in how it performed on this test.
@@petbull7038 every scenario is different so looking at many tests before creating an opinion. See RDForum.org for more tests.
Given this IO test and how poorly the Escorts did due to them being less sensitive to filter out false alerts do you feel that it effects their constant on range as well? Also do you feel that their issue is processing speed?
Well there’s been tons and tons and tons of testing done and it’s done well over the years against constant on. I think Escort is simply focusing on filtering/quietness at the expense of responsiveness.
It would be beneficial to benchmark each detector on the bench as you did with some and provide a baseline performance for best case data. Then provide the test data in a chart that shows all of the results.
Yeah for K band, I'm gonna bench test everything again and add that into the final results.
I think I'm buying a Whistler for the second car lol fast response. This was a great video!!
The Whistler performed very well!
R3 is way better for the money
And the range is much more important. If it’s quick but not alerting at a good distance it’s useless
@@jays9211 That's why I said" lol " I was joking.
@@adaboy4z duh , I didn’t notice the lol!
I'm wondering if you happen to be caught within range and if a quick reaction and hard deceleration it's possible to brake hard and delay the radar actually locking your speed.. I know I've been hit at fairly close (visible) range while not realizing I was traveling at illegal speed, more then 10 over but for what ever reason I wasn't stopped. In other words, can you stop hard enough to affect the radar from immediately locking a speed? I'm using an old Redline that's had a factory update.
No. The radar gun picks up your speed in .3 seconds. It will take you .1 to .2 seconds for your foot to hit the break then the car jas to physically slow down. Thaat process of reaction + actual car slowdown is at least 1.5 seconds. He's already acquired your speed so you're screwed. The best you can hope is that you pick up the radar signal of the car being shot in front of you so you get an early warning.
@@dyinbreedband Maybe a better question is, is there a certain rate of braking that affects the gun ability to lock a speed?
Been really struggling to find new suction cup mounts for an R1 / R3. Tried amazon and got weird sizes. Anyone have recommendations?
I have a R7. You done the test in City mode or highway mode and what is the best best setting for everyday driving use on my R7 .. thanks 👍
That affects sensitivity, but not response time
Ofcourse Highway is more sensitive & should test that way!
Great vid. Thx
The smart cords can be a problem...but what if it is hard wired into the car like escort. I am using an escort and want to get a new radar detector. It was going to be a valentine but now I am not sure. Will it cause a problem?
You’ll need to run a new hardwire cable then, yeah
Great video…..Is $179 for a Uniden DFR9 a good price? Do you know of a better price? Thanks so much
Excellent deal
Thanks I noticed it just said “renewed” on Amazon….. so my search continues for a new one….
Radenso XP gets beat by the Batman. Now that’s , embarrassing .
I’m in Maryland near Washington DC. I have the uniden r7. The ka setting u have up on this video for the segmentation ka 2,4,5,6,8. Do U recommend that in my area. I’m using all segmentations for my ka band now.
I'm in Alexandria, VA. Good choice for this area. I have an R3 btw.
Vortex has a video on the subject...24568 is the way to roll nationwide & and canada. All segments on will decrease performance
a good choice for VA is an r3 as the r7 isn't stealth
I have a uniden R1 and was wondering how this unit still stands with these other brands. I love my R1 and haven't had any problems at all. How do you rate it?
The R1 performs the same as the R3. You're good 😎👍🏽.
did you ever think of mounting them high above rear view mirror as most of them suggest for better distance and less interference from wipers?
Of course. I've tested in both locations and arrows performed fine in both. We also repeated the test yesterday with slightly higher placement (the wipers weren't blocking the RD's view in this video either, though it's hard to tell on video) and the results were the same.
@@VortexRadar Awesome!! thank you for sharing. I own a R3 and was curious
great job testing. in every instance, the speed was clocked so what is the point of the fastest response if the detector is already too late and you do not have time to respond?
If a car is driving 1/4mile ahead of you and the cop quickly turns on radar, he sees that car is not speeding and turns it off quickly.... if your detector’s reaction time is slow you just reduced the amount of time you have to slow down or if your detector even picks up that “blip” of radar that may have only lasted 0.4 seconds.
@@southfloridanick thanks. That makes sense. do you think that radar detectors are less effective against instant on pulses in an empty country road like in the Midwest?
@@DR19X open spaces tend to be better for range but if there are less cars on the road that means the car getting hit in front of you could be an extended distance away resulting in no alert.
I definitely need help with my Uniden R7
Because my reader it's not this good what should I do
True story. Racing home one day going about 90 mph. Had been running for about an hour when I came up on a slightly down grade with a lot of trees in the medium. Saw a truck about 1/2 mi ahead of me. Near the bottom of the hill, saw his momentary brake lights, but no detector signal. Slowed down, when I just passed the median tree line, radar detector went off, instant on. He had my adjusted speed which was within the limit. As I passed him, he turned into my direction and eventually did a "U" turn. I suspected someone had reported me and he was waiting for me. There is no substitute for situational awareness Waze wasn't available back then.
Does anyone know if it’s a power cord for uniden r3 with out the cigarette bottom , but instead usb and;
Have a question for ya. My company really frowns on detectors but allows it. I need one that's non detectable because I use a comical vehicle. Is there more then one thats non detectable???
Sure, check out my Spectre tests. The Redline 360c, V1 Gen 2, and I believe Uniden R3 would all work great.
Im curious how the original redline would have done
I looked at your website. Why do you use a different radar for your travel setup compared to your daily driver?
I explain why on my website. R8 daily and V1/JBV1 for travel. www.vortexradar.com/best-radar-detectors/
Different tools are best suited for different purposes. Same as a hammer and a screwdriver.
I guess the v1g2 was not segmented?. I don't think that's an option anymore and was scanning the entire frequency spectrum. Customizing only limits what is presented. Pretty impressive. Great video, obviously a lot of time put into it.
Segmentation doesn't affect the Gen2 the way it does the Gen1.
Now I'm concerned with my mirror tap power cable. Could you test that cable?
Why? Those are power only and don’t add any data communication which is what was causing the issues in the first place.
great video! is MAX 3 firmware 1.5 out now?
It is, yeah
What’s the lowest % you would go for tint on the windshield for a radar detector. How much would if affect the performance
Tint, unless it's metallic, won't effect radar reception. You could put it behind a strip of vinyl and it'll still work fine. Against lidar though, which radar detectors aren't fantastic at, you can effectively take the current sensitivity and subtract by the % tint. A radar detector behind 60% VLT tint is going to drop sensitivity by 40%.
I'd love to see you repeat this test on the V1G2 while it's connected to an android phone via bluetooth running JBV1. I wonder if having bluetooth on will cause reaction times to be slower.
It.wont matter if you are using the V1 for your initial audio source. But I do love JBV1 as the military upgrade for the V1.
I commute 70 miles each way every day to work and my V1G2 paired with JBV1 saves me all of the time.
Running App and BT will NOT slow reaction time.
@@bigbuckinchicken7562 I have JBV1 only report police and aircraft. Aircraft range is set at 20 miles and police set at 1.5 miles and the later trounces Waze constantly!
@@normt430 I run waze concurrently also and you are right, JBV1 is always ahead of the game. That is the only app developer that I have donated money too because it is so well deserved.
Do you think Uniden will ever improve quality on the build? I love my R3 and R7 but quality on build is bad. Detectors work flawless but looks like shit and displays are going dim. Such a great Detector and saves me everyday but wish it had a better build. Didn't know if you talk to these companies and might have information on this issue. Thanks for all you do. Your videos are extremely important to me
Do these work in UK?
Stalker DSR's only have instant on while patrol vehicle is stationary, right? Not while moving and measuring same or opposite lane?
It works in moving mode too
Would love more info on how the DSR's are operated real world scenarios
@@VortexRadar Hmm, interesting - I have noticed that over here (Latvia), police officers are only using instant on when stationary. Was thinking it's technical limitation, but maybe it's due to their policies or just laziness :P
Thanx!
R3 baby. Got mine for 200 bux. Works great for mobbing out in the countryside.
how long before a cop has you locked in? seconds wise ?
I’d be interested to know stalker speed lock time when patrol and target car are mobile please? Thanks and keep up the great work my friend 👍💯
I noticed in several of your test that the distance you shot the on-coming car was much further out than when you shot the car going away from you, this could affect the signal strength.
Sure, but it was so far away in every instance that there's no excuse for the behavior I saw.
Would like to see the v1g2 tested with the correct power cord at the testing site.
Did you see the part where I mentioned bench testing the V1 with a V1 cord a bunch and it consistently doing 0.3s?
@@VortexRadar yes...just wondering if on the course if it would produce same speed.
Can you acquire the new ODIN detector for testing by Rocky Mountain Radar, as well as the K100 platinum detector by K40, as that would be pretty sweet to see how they perform up against the competition.
Oh I wanna do both. Just a ton of things to do and all of them take so much time, lol
@@VortexRadar Alright no worries, & will wait for you to come around to it no problem.
Have you tried this with the Uniden R8?
Of course, as have others. I’ve covered it in another video and there’s lots of data on the forums. It’s very snappy and responsive.
In the past you have said that the Redline 360c is one of the best detectors on the market and that that is your detector of choice for daily driving. After the results of this test, would you still make that recommendation? Would you consider one of the other detectors a "better" daily driver due to this poor performance by the Redline?
I’ve been thinking about that a lot. Every detector has pros and cons and there’s so many things to consider. This isn’t the most critical thing ever and so I don’t know if this alone should knock it out of position, but it’s still something I’d really like to see improved.
