The contractor was either not motivated or professionally inept... solution: create some drama...walks off. Normal contractors quote you a price. You agree on a price. They provide the tools and manpower. Write a contract that cover all jobs required, materials, estimated work amount, and completion date. Pay 25% at the start. 50% once major jobs are complete. And pay the last 25% on completion after the last walkthrough.

If contracts are not enforceable, what is their use? Especially if it takes 15-20 yrs to move through the ‘justice’ system. Your description of how it should work is correct and fair - in most countries - but Italy has apparently become a welfare state - getting paid not to work. It’s very sad.

We decided a long time ago we would buy a property in Italy that does not need any major upgrades...a little more money but worth it unfortunately we learned a lesson early on and would rather not deal with any contractors. It is already difficult to deal with Italy's regulations to buy a property will not add any more problems by doing any construction! Lessons learned!

As an 8th grade teacher in Pennsylvania this behavior is so very common. I have been teaching for 27 years and the moral values of students are gone. No one wants to work hard for their education and as educators we are to so called "water down the program" and move kids along. So sad, I only thought this was the new way in America, but now I see it's the world. To think my grandparents came from Italy to America and helped build this country. How sad this world is. My children are hard educated people who are teaching good work habits to my grandchildren. Let's pray and hope the world changes. Who do we blame? Parents, Governments and Educators because this is what we have created. The easy way out. Know that God always has a plan and obviously he was not the right person for your job. The good Lord protecting you and someone wonderful will come your way. Be faithful and know this too shall pass. Blessings.

We are renovating a Casale in Montalcino (6 years already!) and we are going through the same emotional roller coaster due to bureaucracy and unprofessional workers. I understand exactly how you feel - you are not alone! I'm from Sweden/Switzerland and for me "Italian way" was difficult to accept. Thanks to my Italian husband I changed the approach about how to handle these issues - I take it easy and I have lowered my expectations - and that helps. Just hang on there because it is not going to get better in Italy. To end on a positive note - I still love Tuscany and would not change my life for a second! I wish you all the best! And remember, one day you'll have a beautiful place to live.

An Armenia guy told me...that is what they do...they try to scare germans with their loudness...sound like it is like that in your case to. JUST FINISHED renovating a wing of a palace in Florence. Italian building contractors… they have a very delicate ego 😂 and they essentially need to be babied and kept in good spirits at all costs, otherwise you’re the one who ultimately suffers due to tantrums.
Professionalism isn’t in the equation. At all. But once you build a rapport, they can also be very sweet and hard working.
Ultimately business relationships in Italy are NOT based on professionalism. They’re based on emotional connection. Standards, quality, speed, efficiency - its all intrinsically tied to how the contractor feels about you as a client, rather than their professional al obligation to the job.
I’ve tried to steer clear of criticising Italian contractors in my videos, but I totally understand your feelings and sometimes their behaviour needs to be spoken publicly about it!

Hi Kylie! I'm also a farm owner in the Philippines and this is one thing I have noticed about people working for us. I don't know if this will help but my 2 cent thought on this is I have noticed workers with whom you build a friendly relations with can abuse you because they no longer treat you as someone contracting their services but their comrade. In our farm, my husband, who is a lawyer (I mention this because he should command more authority than me because of his profession), is very friendly with our farm workers and builders and they actually don't take him seriously. Like your builder, they'd throw tantrums and walk out on him and he's the most chill employer I know. I observed this and so I, as a stark contrast to that of my husband, try to make a distance and reduce our relations to being contractor and contracted service worker. Meaning, I'm not friendly with them in such a way that i try to keep boundaries. Not asking about their family or anything that is personal. I reduce our conversations to work and the expectations of both parties. I don't know if it is psychology but the workers actually do what i ask them to do so much so that whenever my husband wants something done, he asks me to tell them because he thinks the workers do what i ask them to do compared to him. We give them benefits over and above of what was agreed upon because as you mentioned, these are highly skilled workers and we acknowledge that it's hard work. But I make a mental note to make sure that the relationship will never go beyond professional. It's interesting to note that everytime my husband attempts to give them an instruction, they will fret and start making excuses why it can't be done and my husband would immediately tell them "it's how my wife wanted it done so if you can just explain to her why it can't be done". Almost immediately, they will retract and say they will do everything to meet the expectation. Funny Noh? It actually works for us. It may not relate to you based on the culture and social location of your country but may help in some way.

@@KylieFlavell I understand your frustration, but it's ridiculous to even think that this situation has something to do with the RdC or welfare payments. Inform Guido that welfare payments are available to all EU citizens except in Greece, and till 3 years ago in Italy. Also 2/3rd of people receiving RdC payments can't even work due to disability. As an italian living in Australia, I'm also well aware of how welfare payments work here. Please inform Guido that here in Australia there are generations of families living on Centrelink payments. On the contrary, my understanding is that in Italy you can lose the RdC after refusing two jobs. Unfortunately, trashing the RdC has become a national sport in Italy and it's very disappointing to see that for any kind of issue that arises people pick on the most vulnerable.
As many have already posted, your problems with builders are very common all over the world due to the higher prices for fuel and materials. For example, here in Australia there are many big well known companies that have gone bust and left their customers with nothing.

In trades, some people are lazy and don't want to get up early or work long hours. The only people who will work hard are the migrant workers who come to work for wineries and farms. What has happened to getting a job and doing it to the best of your abilities and work your way up the ladder. Governments are to blame. I knew things were bad in Italy but I never thought it would be like here. Stay strong and get Kylie's father over there fast! Once again, thank you for a wonderful video. We are from the UK with Italian residency , with the assistance of our architect we have established our own building company, paying the Italian taxes IVA . So we can now legally build and restore our own property . This will take us some considerable time , however we are now in control with our own project. We also started a CZcams channel Brambletye , about the restoration and our lifestyle . We wish you all the best and thoroughly enjoy your vlogs both quality and content. Lynn Steve & Button (dog )

I am so sorry about what happened to you and I hope for you guys that you solve this situation as soon as possible and before your baby arrives!! However, the way you are portraying things such as Italian cultural work habits, the lack of employees mainly in the touristic sector because they would rather take the "Reddito di Cittadinanza" than work is not entirely true! Reddito di cittadinanza is not the cause of people not wanting to work, rather the fact that the contracts are only seasonal and the pay might be low, perhaps? and people need more stability. A little more objectivity would not put Italy in such a bad light maybe. I completely understand where you are at and where your judgement comes from. Your bad experience might have made this all sour? Many thanks, you guys for your videos!

I can’t imagine not following through on a contract (I also can’t imagine not wanting to work by the hour because jobs ALWAYS take longer than anticipated). I consider it my responsibility to provide a quote that is realistic for me. It is my word. I have completed jobs that took much longer than expected and still have never changed the price mid-job. We are embarking on a renovation of our own with a recent purchase of a piccola casa in Calabria. This conversation of the state of work ethic with the general younger generation is, I believe a Western, global concern. We live in Canada and and I was raised stateside, (originally from Spain) My husband is Swiss and lived around the world, including your Australia. Both of our parents have always worked and sacrificed for our education, however we both have always worked while in school, and in fact, since 12 years old within the family restaurant/hospitality business and all through university. As a business owner & chef now for many years, I have seen the gradual shift of work ethic among the generations of my work team. All great “kids” , but it’s very interesting how the perception of work has changed. The notion of applying oneself to a discipline, while learning about what it means to be responsible and credible (doing what you say), and learning how to “adult” and be held accountable for your decisions and contribution. It’s certainly different from how we were raised. Perhaps we sound old (55) and that may be the case, but I would hope that there is a return to the crafts and artisan trades that have been held in high esteem over the centuries. We need to return to this sense of pride in one’s work. Best of luck in the renovation and thank you for sharing! 🙏💗💪

Sorry that you are going through this frustrating situation. Try not to get too stressed over it. Hi Kylie this is so hard to hear… I am just beginning renovations in a property I got in my hometown in Tuscany. My position is very similar to Guido’s one, we have known this construction company for long time so I hope I do not have to go through what you had this morning. My heart is with you two an I hope you’ll find a solution soon ❤️
Unfortunately this is something it is happening everywhere. I work remotely as HR manager for an Australian company and I know from experience and colleagues that some people receiving centrelink support send blank applications or clearly say “please do not call me I prefer stay on centrelink payment”!… please do not get me wrong, I love Australia and its systems, so much more fair than Italian ones but “Tutto il mondo è paese” and you’ll find similar experience wherever you go.
Sadly in Italy there is the old idea that if you go to a technical school and go to work straight after, becoming a Plummer, electrician or similar you are not as good, as “worth” as someone who did classic/scientific high school and went to Uni, graduated and build a career (hopefully!)
Of course this doesn’t apply if you define yourself as an Artigiano… you get so much more respect because you’re doing art and not labour job (even if sometimes there is no much difference).
I think the only “cure” for this is not just travelling, but moving and living in a foreign country for a while. It is such an eye opening experience, it makes you questions so much of your believes and those things you thought all your life were normal.
Then you go back to your home and not only see clearly the faults but you actively want to fix them!
At least, this is what happened to me :)
    Sorry for the endless comment!
Buona fortuna … I am sure everything will be fine in the end!

I remember having an apprentice in our bakery- someone that actually decided to learn how to be a baker- and after a few days he just quit- it's too difficult. Same goes for people who just need to work in the shop and sell bread- they will come for a week and then ask for sick note for two weeks- and we have to pay them a full price the first month- before the state will pay them (half of it of course). Same goes for people here who prefer to get state benefits than go to work. I feel sometimes like an old woman (and I'm 44)- when I feel that the world is not changing for the better. In the USA, young people have an epidemic of so-called mental health disorders and by the time they are preteens, they are labeled as “Disabled” and will live off the government for a lifetime. The worst thing is, there are some people who NEED the help, but those able-bodied people who are not willing to work are taking from those who truly can’t work. It is global, shockingly, after reading through many comments here. I knew it was bad in the USA and Canada, but had no idea that it was as bad in so many other nations. That should make us ALL aware of the bigger agenda here.

So sorry this is happening for you all as you embark upon parenthood. Breathe deep and all will eventually work out. We have traveled Italy several times and love the Umbria area of Citta della Pieve, where our cousin had a home. We dreamt of buying and renovating, but gosh it seems extremely difficult. My husband is a master craftsman and finisher and also a construction guru so we have that going for us. I hope you have great news by next week! We love watching your adventures as you guys make your dreams come true. But the reality in life is there are setbacks, so you are handling a big one right now, so sorry. It is no different here in America for construction, welfare or politicians. Integrity is a serious problem for the world! Teach your child hard work! My son had to help his dad learn skills, and he has just graduated college as well. Both can help you in life. You and Guido are very hard-working, one of the reasons we admire you both. Best of luck this week in finding a solution!!!

Move forward leave the negative not meant to be find a new builder that values his clients and always have an agreement in writing..it's best to agree on a quote and time frame to complete the work . Do not worry it's frustrating and everyone has a story like this when it comes to renovations!

So sorry to hear of your trouble with the hired person you chose for this job. If you get an attorney to force him to finish a job may be dangerous because if he finishes a part of the work, he may do a crappy job that looks o.k. on the surface, but then you have trouble down the road with his work. I would look for someone different completely.

Some times God takes someone out of your life to protect you. Don’t run after them. This guy would have continue to hold you over a barrel and make your life miserable. You will find someone. You will have to find a professional crew. The job will get done faster.
I feel your pain we have a structure problem that needs to be repaired and the bids are high and everyone is busy and they don’t call back etc etc.
You two will be in my prayers. Good luck 🍀

I am in Australia... I did kitchen hand work, cafe service whilst a student and this was the norm. My children worked in fast food and kitchens from 14 years of age whilst at high school...they enjoyed earning their own money and I believe it has given them a very good work ethic now as adults.

We are facing the same issues in Canada due to unemployment incentives. Feels like our entire global social structure is changing. Hang in there, thankyou for this informative and touching content.

100%. Renovating in Italy can totally be a nightmare. I work incredibly hard to keep client's renovation experiences as transparent and stable as possible, but I have to remember my limitations as a real estate agent. This is a constant battle that baffles me even today and is no different here in the northern lakes. So sorry to hear about your experience.

I know only to well of this behaviour also as an Australian 🇭🇲 living in Italy 🇮🇹❤️✌️
At the moment I'm trying to negotiate a monthly price on a rental property , it's becoming more difficult theses days.
The past 2 plus years we've all had so many challenges and things global are very difficult to find especially when it comes to building materials. Stay safe and well everyone Ciao Wendy 😘❤️😘
