Despite being a lifelong city slicker who's idea of wilderness is taking a walk through a park, I just love this amazing use of natural ingredients to make a vital tool. Respect.
@@soniakal7751 I mean, others are saying the same thing as you. So it's understandable. But when I see a short where someone is in the woods with a tin can, it usually always ends up being about starting a fire or something related to that
Here’s something neat to try. Rub a bar of soap on the bottom of your pots and pans. Preferably one that won’t melt and isn’t toxic when heated. After you’re done using it over a fire you can wash away the soot that builds up on the bottom easily.
Cat tail fluff is a wonderful fire starter, my environmental literature professor had us dry out cat tail fluff and then later in the semester he took some, put it on a kids desk, and lit it with a farrow rod, it worked a little too well and he had to bring his boot up onto the desk to stomp it out.
first off i just want to acknowledge that the way you formatted this comment is so reddit (cringe) secondly he mentions that the makeshift torch drips hot sap so you wouldn’t want to hold it upright aka burning yourself.
Very useful and portable. Thank you.. Another tip for outdoors. Carry a candle with you. When lighting your fire, light candle with match, gives you more time to light a fire, you only use one match. I use a birthday candle in my small kits, larger candle for my pack. If a true survival situation, you never know how long your usable gear has to last. Stay safe and all the best and may God bless. Take care of our great outdoors. If you take it in, Pack It Out. Be respectful of property owners rights, ask permission first. Take care and be safe.
I would probably just pull chunks out as needed as a firestarter. I have seen people do this same idea with cotton balls and Vaseline or paraffin wax. Same idea and works like a charm when your working with wet material
Me and my cousin built a settlement in the woods and we love these videos because they help us learn survival and building fires techniques. This channel is honestly a huge help. One time when we were 11/12 and we built an entire house with 20 foot tall trees in about 2/3 days. It could fit 4 huge German Shepards and her me and her parents. It’s not big, we only used about 8 or 9 trees in a teepee style build, but it’s functional, with cedar leaves for insulation. We are 14/15 now and still built on to the settlement😅
as someone with bags stashed in places for all sort of emergencies, this channel has made me realise that dont have a "survival outdoor" bag. SUBSCRIBED
I love your videos. They make me feel informed and like I have a better chance out there if I do get stuck. It gives me an odd sense of comfort and preparedness, even if I'm just watching something.
No he meant emergency fire starter in wet conditions. In wet conditions you need a constant fire source to burn the wood dry so it'll catch on fire. You try that with a lighter and it'll explode on you before you can start a fire. So you'd get a wet pile of sticks, light that can on fire, place it under the sticks and in about 10 minutes you'll have a nice fire.
Idk why I watch these, I don’t live where I would need it, I don’t go camping and I never intend on doing so but I just think these videos are cool af, i feel like I learn so much every single time I see one and if I was ever in a predicament where I would need to have a fire and I only have the land to work from I have the knowledge. Ty
Literally the best type of information I NEED, I literally just randomly head out in the day and go exploring in the forest or something. This is so cool, I’ll probably use this the next time I go camping with friends, (well, if it’s needed)
I thoroughly enjoy these. Reminds me of being out camping with my dad and he’d always have something that you couldn’t get at a store to make sure we’d be alright.
He meant it works as emergency kindle material, not that it can be used to light the fire. for in case you are in wet conditions or somewhere without other ready available things to kindle a fire.
Me not knowing how to identify these plants or if they even grow in my area: Ah yes, splendid. I must memorize this information in case it rains the next time im out on a hike. Thanks for sharing, videos like this are encouraging me to learn more about nature and old-world knowledge.
Check enough pines and you'll come across a good bit eventually.. most of the time I'll only a find a little at a time, but every now and then I find a tree with a huge injury that produces a ton of it
I am not sure you can use a lighter to effectively cook, nor would it be as effective a touch as the one he made. The lighter is the same thing as the ol' rubbing two sticks together to generate heat. Just faster.
Well, a big flame illuminates the surrounding environment more than the little ass flame from a lighter, but let's be real, even people like me that live next to forests just carry a couple electric torches in their fanny pack, so you're right the third use case was a bit meh 😅
I think he said "fire starter" for bad weather conditions, meaning all the tinder in the surrounding area would be wet, while this would ignite just fine.
Ha! Just taught this to my kid when hubting for snow free camp sites. Dound some wicked bunches of pitch. Used witches hair, but basically the same thing. Mixed it by hand on a piece of flat wood with sticks, then made quick 5 min torch.
Get a lighter and go try and light stuff on fire while its raining. You’ll quickly realise why you need to either prep well or bring something to accelerate starting a good fire like this
I don't think I can find these materials in hot Asia Regions. Cattails, whatever fluffy tails, pine raisin. Ever in US, Canada forest, you can find those easily as long as there are pines forest.
Reminds me a lot about prepping wax covered cotton for emergency fire starting, but this is something you can do on site if you either misplaced the waxed cotton or ran out unexpectedly. Good stuff!
