Thanks for the tip, great video mate.

Well done sir
The choke doesn't send more fuel. If it did they'd call it a sender. It chokes the air so the bike runs less lean or more rich.
Thanks for teaching me something new! Good to know!
this was so awesome and interesting, well elaborated :) new sub here!

How many are here cause your dad said “if you can start it, you can ride it”?
haha! I remember my dad telling me the same thing! Thanks for watching!
Exactly what he said😂
I'm here because I didn't have a Dad 😂
Bought my first bike today, 2006 Honda 450R. Stupid fast but I have trouble starting it. Back at it tomorrow
I had a 04 Honda 450R for a while! It’s a great bike, mine got hard to start as well, I replaced the valves, and did not have any more problems with it. It could also be difficult to start from a dirty air filter, carburetor, or spark plug!
@@RadAdventureDude thanks for the response! so it turns our the air filter was EXTREMLY dirty but before I cleaned it I ended up getting the hang of kicking it over. Started with standing on the bike stand and now I can kick it over first try from the ground. The guy didnt ride it for the last few years so it was probably from sitting for so long
Glad you were able to get it figured out! Always keep the air filter clean, and oil changed for the longevity of the bike! Have fun
Have you made a video of how to turn off a dirk bike without a kill switch
No I haven’t, and that would make a great video thank you!
i got a question, my yz250f doesn't kick start but you can bump start, what is the problem?
I like that
Thanks dude! What kind of dirt bike do you have?
Hello please answer me. I would like to ask if it doesn't matter if the bike is kicking and the kicker is down for 2 seconds with the engine running. Won't the starting segment fail later? 5:13 THANK YOU :)
It’s not a good thing to have the kick starter pushed down as the bike is running. Once you get the bike started try to release the kick starter pretty quickly so it doesn’t cause any issues with the bike!
Ik how to kick start it but I’m just gonna put this out for other ppl if ur in a rush kinda or wanna make it a tiny bit easier when u kick it down with ur foot on it Rev ur throttle
That’s great advice! Sometimes all it takes is a little extra throttle to get the bike started!
thank you im getting a kick start soon

How about when you kick start swings back at you? 🤔 opinions on that?
After kicking the Kickstarter, try to keep your foot on top of the Kickstarter to avoid it coming back up as fast and aggressively! Hope this helps!
Hi!This summer i might get a 08 rmz 250 and i wanted to ask so i can understand better, the choke means you let gas go in the motor?(english is not my first language) and after your bike starts you have to close it or do i leave it?
Once you start the dirt bike with choke, and the bike idles on it own then turn the choke off before riding!
The choke cuts back on the air intake, to help the motor start up more easily!
Always glad to help, and your English is great!
Stay Rad Dude!
I can’t tell if pausing at the bottom is a recipe for kickback or if I’m supposed to pause at the bottom after each kick
A slight pause is okay if the dirt bike doesn't start up, but if the dirt bike starts you do not want to hold the kickstarter down!
Can I leave fuel off when I am riding and not riding I seen peaple no using the fuel
The fuel switch no, the bike will run out of gas and quit.
The throttle yes! The only time you must have the throttle on is when letting the clutch out for the first time. After that you can use the throttle when you want to go faster. You do not have to have the throttle on all the time.
Just make sure if the rear wheel starts spinning slow, pull in the clutch to keep the bike from stalling!
Hope this helped you out! Keep practicing dude!
Hey I’m looking for a dirt bike and I’ve never really had one what size should I get (im 4.11)
How old are you, and have you ever rode a 4 wheeler or any other type of off road vehicle?
Should I give a little throttle when starting?
Most of the time using a choke, or a hot start will help enough to get the bike started. Some older bikes however really like to have the slightest amount of throttle added as well! What type of bike are you trying to start?
Just got a sr189 2021 and tge peg is interfering with the Kickstart lever any advice?
I’m not sure how bad it’s interfering, but this is normal for some bikes to hit the foot peg as you start the bike! You should still be able to get the bike started like this but as it wears over time the kick starter may get scarred up!
Hope you get this fixed soon!
Btw if your not sure if the bike is in neutral roll it forward, and if the bike won't let you roll it forward it is in gear.
Thank you for watching and commenting Curtis! Always feel free to ask any questions you may have, I will always try to help as much as I can!
@@RadAdventureDude How do you set off( like your in the start of a race) without the front wheel coming up because it is quite scary sometimes when your not expecting it.
Just hold the clutch in when you start it then it doesn't, natter if it's in gear. I always hold the clutch in when I start my yz490. Lots of guys hold the clutch in when they start a dirtbike
Some how I missed this comment, but here is a video on how to master starts! It will explain the secrets to keeping the front wheel on the ground!
How To Master Your Starts
czcams.com/video/kXQ383VizDo/video.html
Wow
Hope this helped you!!! Make sure to check out my how to ride a dirt bike for beginners playlist for more information!
Great videos. I've recently bought a 1997 KTM 250 EXC, which is a 2-stroke, and I worked on it and got it rideable. It is my first bike and I'm a learner. So when I got it rideable I just had two rides and now it won't kickstart. I will look at the power valve and carbie, but in the meantime I want to try to bump start it.
What I'm confused about is the difference between your bike and my bike when it's bump started. My neighbour, who is an experienced rider, bump started my bike a couple of times the other day while going down a hill, and each time the rear tire did a very big slide before starting. It looked quite intimidating to me, which is why I haven't tried to bump start it myself yet.
However when you bump start your bike in this video, your rear wheel is very different and doesn't loose traction at all. My neighbour knows about weighting the back wheel, although perhaps he wasn't doing it well enough. However there is just such a big difference that I think it must be more than a weighting issue. With my bike, the rear wheel skidded for a long way and wouldn't start until the bike had almost skidded to a stop.
Is this ok and why is there such a difference between your bike and mine when bump starting? The bike runs well, although it doesn't start easy with the kickstarter most of the time. And now not at all. The kickstarter doesn't have an easy action like yours, there is some hard compression spots. Although when I measured the compression it was only 150 psi.
Yeah that is kinda different!
The bike I was on was a 450 4 stroke, and it struggles to start as well! It seems like your 250 2 stroke would be easier to bump start, and wouldn’t have as much torque. I did some valve work to the 450, because the valves are known to get flattened, which will make it hard to start. This helped a lot! It still struggles to start when it is cold.
Also I like to put the bike in 2nd or 3rd gear when bump starting, because it will start up easier than if it was in 1st gear!
Always check the air filter, and the carburetor. If the are dirty then this will also make it much harder to start!
Hope this helps, and always feel free to ask any other questions you may have!
@@RadAdventureDude
Very helpful. What valves are you talking about being flattened, the reed valves or exhaust power valve?
The engine valves we replaced are located right at the top end of the motor! This was not a super expensive fix!
The skidding is likely because your bike is cold, you might notice there is still resistance with the clutch in while the bike is off in 1st gear. In dirtbikes, a clutch is never fully disengaged, the plates always make contact. (hence your rear wheel locking up) you will not notice this when your bike is warmed up and off, the clutch should operate normally.
How long do you keep the choke on
Once the bike has been started you will hear the higher rpm level with the choke on. The newer bikes do not need to have the choke on too long, older bikes however may want to be running for a few minutes! Also if it’s cold outside you may want to leave the choke on longer than a warm day!
Just make sure not to ride your bike with the choke on! Hope this helped!
3:11 your choke is asking to be accidentally opened when you crash or ride too hard
It is pretty tucked up inside the dirt bike! The most common is breaking a clutch or front brake lever!
Question when I crank the bike do I have to hold in the clutch like a motorcycle or no?
If your in nutrol no but in gear year
Exactly if you in neutral then no, but if you are in gear yes!
You can hold the clutch in when you start a dirtbike even in neutral. Just a matter of preference. Many guys do it out of habit. I always hold the clutch in when I start my yz490 dirtbike.
Holding the clutch in is a habit for me too, even in neutral!
Question: can you ruin your kick start if you put to much weight or force?
Maybe if you weigh 500lbs
@@NasdaqManiac i mean if you kick it to hard
@@johnlee727 that's what I'm saying. You'd probably have to put 500lbs of force to break one on a big bike
It is rather difficult to do but anything is possible! I just like to assure people are not forcing anything. If its not wanting to move check if anything is stopping it from working correctly before continuing!
i'm trying start mine and all i smell is gasoline and it won't crank no matter how much you try so i'm going to check the spark plug getting spark
So you only need to use the clutch to start it if it's in gear, not neutral? Right?
If is in gear the clutch will free up the back wheel, but I always find it easier to start a bike in neutral!
I always hold the clutch in when I start my yz490. Many guys do. Just a matter of preference.
Absolutely, I think I hold the clutch in out of habit, but I still like to put the dirt bike in neutral first!
Me too. Always hold the clutch in whether in gear or not. Just force of habit. Most guys I know hold the clutch in when atarting their dirtbikes. Does make your hand ache though when your kicking the shit out of a stubborn 490 for 10 mins. Always gets an audience when your kicking over a big dirtbike high and hard ,having a hard time getting it to start.
I know that feeling all to well! On single track trails you never know how your bike may be positioned, and that can get interesting too!
I been trying to start my bike and I couldn’t, could it be because I would try to start it from the very top ?
Some bike can be a challenge to get them to start the first time after they have been sitting a while!
Probably not, it would still start from there. I always like to check air filter, and clean the carburetor!
Bigger cc bikes should be kicked from tdc (top dead center)
Thanks Carl great advice!
I got honda 450 bro
That’s awesome it’s such a great dirt bike!
How long have you been riding for?
Who knows how to do this but you just watched it
Hope this helped you!
If you want to fix a dirt bike, please please please fix a two-stroke not a 4-stroke because modern 4-strokes have these fancy electrics that make it hard to repair. My dad had to find this out the hard way
Haha yeah that’s so true! My dad would rebuild my two strokes my whole life. Ever since my first 250 4 stroke, my bike goes straight to the shop to get fixed!
I broke my crank today
Yikes, that’s not good! That can be an expensive fix. Hope all goes well!
Not much and you?
What about the fuel
The on and off fuel is on the left side of the bike! It’s a nob near the carburetor!
I recently bought my first bike and the entire thing jumps forward in neutral. Anyone know what's up?
It could be a couple of different things, depending on the bike. Always check your oil, and fluid levels! It most likely has something to do with the clutch. It could be internal, or just cable adjustment or fluid level!
Great advice! Thanks for helping!
That’s awesome! Great work!
It’s not on neutral 😂
Then its not on neutral or the bike slips from neutral to gear
Hey man I got my first bike its a 1981 kawsaki 175cc and my kicker is stuck what should i do
Try to put the bike in neutral and see if the bike rolls! If the dirt bike rolls thats a good sign, and your kickstarter could just be jammed! If it does not roll then your piston or crank could be seized!
If you pull the clutch cover you can tell if the kick shaft is broken, but you will still have to split the cases if anything is broken!
I hope you can get this resolved quickly!
@@RadAdventureDude thanks sir o willy try that as soon as my throttle cable comes it

Yes
What kind of questions do you have?
I was trying to kick start my dad's trials bike and couldn't do it I thought it was me but it was out of gas😂
That’s always a good place to start when you can’t get a bike started. I have done the same, but forgot to turn the gas on, on the bike.
Is it true a 125cc kickstart 4 stroke can break ur foot
I would like to say not with the proper footwear, but I assume anything is possible.
Hope that didn’t happen to you.

with the choke
The choke always helps when you are first starting your dirt bike! Thanks you for watching!
How you turn it off
Kill switch?
The Kill switch is normally located on the left side of the handle bars normally it is a big red, or black button. your thumb should be able to reach this at any time!
thank you for your helpful reply!
I’m dumb I was riding mine with the choke on😂😂
ooh thats a big no no! haha
Allowing the dirt bike to warm up is great with the choke on, but as soon as you get the dirt bike started, and briefly warmed up, turn the choke off, and never ride with it on!
i am riding in a winter and that bike cant fokin start its so cold
It’s so difficult to get a super cold bike to start. Especially a 4 stroke! Try to get the bike in a warmer place to help get it started. Also cleaning the air filter, or cleaning the carburetor will help the bike start better!
@@RadAdventureDude okey thanks
Hi again

I don’t like hearing that what happened?
Here is a video for you about that!
How To Turn Fuel Shut Off Valve ON or OFF
czcams.com/video/UHmjefxT3rg/video.html
I can’t kick my kickstarter, is it that I’m too light for the bike or something else
I’m not entirely sure, but if the Kickstarter won’t move at all it could be a bigger problem inside the motor! If you can move the Kickstarter, and it just won’t turn over. Then you may have to clean the carburetor or air filter. Hope this helped!
@@RadAdventureDude it works but I have to jump a little bit otherwise it is impossible for me
Yeah it sounds like the bike just has a lot of compression! That’s much better than none at all!
@@RadAdventureDude I’ve seen a two stroke 85 that this guy could start with 3 fingers literally almost zero compression
Yeah when I was growing up the smaller 2 stroke bikes had hardly any compression, you would kick them 4 or 5 times in a row and they would start right up!
I didn't want a how to like I have never cranked one yet. I kinda wanted tips and tricks. I will wear myself out trying to start my shit and then my bros get on and kick it 2 or 3 times and it pops right up. Am I giving it to much gas using the choke when I don't need to? Or what? I don't need to know where the choke is or where the kick lever is or if it has 3 inches of movement before it catches I know all that. Make a video where u tell the specific trick that YOU are doing yourself to get it started.
Thank you so much for your response! I will make a video soon on tips and tricks on what i am doing more precisely, but the type of bike your on does matter a lot! So depending if it is a 4 stroke, or a 2 stroke, or carbureted or fuel injected! These factors will really add into how to get a bike started!
What kind of bike are you on so I can help you more?
@@RadAdventureDudeI have an 06 Cr125..
Oh sweet bike! So being a 2 stroke, and carbureted will definitely add into the bike being hard to start! Always keep carburetor clean and make sure there is no moisture in it!
When the bike is cold, I would use the choke, and apply the smallest amount of throttle possible. Kick the bike a few times, then maybe let off the throttle and see if this will help the bike fire up. It’s really easy to flood a 2 stroke, be careful with the amount of throttle added.
Also a rapid kick works well with 2 strokes. So by trying to kick the bike over two or three time in a row can sometimes be able to get the bike to start up!
If the bike is still struggling to start at this point, clean air filter, and air filter box. Change spark plug, clean carburetor, or check the gas mixture you are using!
That should be a easy bike to get started when is warm. It may give you some trouble when it is cold. So just keep these things clean, and the longer a bike sits the harder it will be to start!
I really hope this helps you, and I am so glad you found my channel! Always feel free to ask any other questions you have, and I will help as much as I can!
@@RadAdventureDude thank you. I will make sure to go over these things in the future. I just had the engine rebuilt and carb cleaned and new spark plug. Heck I keep extra spark plugs always for my 2 stroke. I mix my gas with a measuring thing with Motul 2t. And every 2nd ride no matter how far i went I change my transmission fluid with motul trans fluid. I think the way my buddies were getting it and I wasn't is one of the things that you mentioned. The "RAPID KICK". I'll kick all long and hard and come to think of it they do hop on and kick kick kick 2 or 3 times all RAPID KICK like 🤣.. im going to do that next time and see how she likes me now 👿
That’s perfect routine maintenance for your bike great work!
Oh good! Yes I have found that rapid kick technique to work great for a 2 strokes! Where a 4 stroke just likes one good hard kick to get it started, because of the amount of compression the 4 stroke has!
I really hope this helps you, and gets you starting your dirt bike on the first couple of kicks!
