    Early morning wakes aren't something you just have to live with as a parent with a new baby. You can actually get your baby to wake up at a much more reasonable hour with a few small changes.
    You probably don't want to wake up at 4am or 5am every day if you don't have to. And believe it or not, neither does your baby. It's most likely only happening because they've fallen into a pattern where this is their current 'normal'. However it's quite easy to change once you understand the cause.
    In this video you'll learn why your baby wakes up early and the simple steps you can take to change their routine and get them waking up at a time that's much better for you and them.

    I feel lucky. My little guy wakes up early because my husband wakes up for work at 4 and is too loud in the house. But my little guy goes right back to sleep after a snack and a diaper change. And he will stay asleep til 9 or 10 after. And I go right back to sleep too. I feel blessed.

    My little one (almost 5 months) keeps waking up between 5 and 5:30 in the morning. We do keep him in the dark bedroom until 6 but he needs his first nap at 7 then. Following the second step in your video, would we have to push his first nap then by an hour as his desired wake up time would be 6?

    Early mornings was 6 o'clock with my boys. I do not think it was because of a habit. I have twins and I always fed them at the same time, they slept at the same time and still, one of them waked 2-3 hours earlier than the other one. As hard as I tried to make then wake up at the same time, it didn't work. Now they're 4.5 yo and still one of them tends to wake up earlier ( not 6 anymore) and the other tends to sleep longer. And they are put to bed at the same time.

    I found waking up at 5am was nice and helpful. It made me feel like I have so much that I can accomplish during the day. I’m saying this knowing that baby went to sleep at 7pm so she got solid ten hours of sleep. Yes, baby does want to take a early nap by 8am or 9am, which is fine. I’m not sure why waking up early is bad. It feels natural. As a mother, I’m an early riser too, so maybe that is why it doesn’t bother me. Obviously, I try to go to bed by 9pm myself so I’m getting enough sleep hours. I also worked night shift for four years in my twenties so my stamina and endurance for intermittent or unconventional sleep is high.

    • @karolinna880
      @karolinna880 Pƙed rokem +7

      Maybe it is considered as "bad" because for most people 4 am is the middle of the night and they cannot function properly when they wake up sooo early.

    • @lavralaskai7822
      @lavralaskai7822 Pƙed rokem +3

      I guess all these "bad habits" are a matter of preference really. You should go with what works for you and the baby. :) Most of these videos' target audiences are working parents who have to plan their schedule around their work but I am just guessing.

      I have 2 kids one toddler that doesnt find into sleep early but sleeps long and a baby that falls asleep quickly but wakes up early. Doing all my kidsfree chores after toddler is asleep means I am working until 10pm. So waking up with my baby at 5 means a total of 7h sleep. IF i find into sleep right after cleaning.
      I need a more synchron sleep pattern for my kids..

    My 3-month old was falling asleep around 10PM and had 1-2 wake ups until 9AM, so like 10 to 5, 5 to 9 (we have blackout blinds so it's still fairly dark in the room until the curtains are opened). I'm quite happy with that bedtime and wake up time and if I'm understanding the sleep guide properly, it should be developmentally appropriate as it's about 10-11 hours of sleep.
    She is going through a sleep regression right now where she's waking up more often though :( Still following the same bedtime and wake up time, but more frequent wake ups. She falls back asleep easily enough, so she's still getting at least 10 hours, and sometimes she falls back asleep on her own, but I can't wait for this regression to pass because we're in the same room and she's so NOISY when she's self soothing back to sleep! So regardless of whether she needs help or not, I still have to wake up lol.

      I haven't started brushing my little ones teeth yet but will soon. One thing I find with my almost 1 year old is that he is easier to do things to -like nappy change, getting into pram or car seat, getting dressed, ect - when he originally doesn't want to comply by singing silly songs I just make up on the spot. Trying to make normal things a bit silly & fun tends to make them much more doable for us & I imagine teeth time will probably be the same. Another thing I would think is I will brush my teeth as well at the same time as babies love to mimic what we are doing.
      One last thing I have seen are little brushes you put on your finger which seem interesting. I imagine sticking a finger in their mouth would be far easier then angling the brush around.... & again wiggling it like a little finger puppet or something while singing might be funny for them.

    Any thoughts or comments regarding an early morning poop and how to maintain a regular schedule? My 10 month old has been pooping every single morning at 5am for the last month. I usually change his diaper and put him back down, but it leads to consistent crying until I get him out of the crib at 7 AM, which is our desired awake time. He usually gets anywhere from 2.5 - 3 hours of nap sleep and about 35 ounces total in 24 hours.

    Hello Emma, thanks for this video. My baby is now 5 months ans half, he was used to sleep all night long (9pm to 7am) but since one week, he awakes at 4-5 and I think because he's hungry. I fed him last night and he ate like half of his normal quantity and fell asleep again until 7am (our alarm clock). There is any chance to make him sleep until at least 6-6.30 and feed him at this moment? We started weaning two weeks ago with dinner at 7.30pm and full bottle of milk ad 9, just before sleep. Thanks!!!

  • @enieniz

    well my 6mo old has started to wake up earlier after her first teeth came out a month ago and that is waking up at 4-5am instead of 6-7 am (even later sometimes). so i just change and feed her next to her bed without fuss or turning on lights and tbh after her bottle she goes back to sleep until around 7:30 or 8am. I wouldn’t call this a first nap or should I?
    I put her in bed for the night at 8:30pm after a last bottle of milk and she naps twice a day now which I trained her to do because she is not easy to fall asleep during the day. i follow a three hour gap between naps which basically makes the first nap around 11am and second around 3pm. each nap is of 1h15 - 1h30 max and that has helped establishing the night routine. this and also a bottle/food schedule every 3h30-4h starting at 9am (excluding the early morning one). so it goes 9, 1pm, 5pm and 8:30pm give or take. Hope this helps anyone

    Hi! Do you have advice for toddlers' parents?
    My daughter is an active baby and getting her to fall asleep is very very difficult. I have been advised to let her be in a dark room and she'll eventually fall asleep. But I am usually short on time. And I made the mistake of helping her fall asleep, and now she needs my help to fall asleep. And I can't let her be because I have an infant who needs me to get her ready for bed and everything. So, how do I get my toddler to fall asleep faster, and independently. I do take her out for a little exercise, but she needs more of that but she has to do other things on time to have time for outdoor games. Like eating. She is frustrating at lunch table as well. He goes to sleep at 7pm wakes for the day at 7:30am, usually. He usually only wakes at 1-3 am for a bottle. He only naps at daycare 1-2 hours total. So he should have enough sleep pressure to go back to sleep but doesn't.
    I put him to bed awake and he puts himself to sleep, even in the middle of the night after a bottle. His hunger is waking him and keeping him awake but he "shouldn't" need to eat in the middle of the night any more.

      Hello Julia,
      you can train your child to go to sleep without you - but it needs some time.
      What you can do:
      - a bedtime ritual (for example a little prayer or a little song) and then you can give the child a kiss and say Goodnight.
      - the room should be dark
      - not too many words and excuses and explanations. Use short sentences and always the same words to explain the situation
      - Trust the child (and God) that your baby can learn this in a few days or weeks
      - Use white noise to get the child to sleep (for example you can play the sound of the vacuum cleaner. There are some videos with this sound on CZcams)
      - You can give the child a piece of clothing that smells like you (for example your t-shirt that you have worn)
      - Don't panic when your child cries and wants you to come. You wait maybe half an hour and let the child try to fall asleep by himself / herself. Then you go to his / her bed and repeat the sentence you have said to the child: "Now it is time to sleep. I wish you a good night." (or something like that). You smile at the child, wave your hand and then leave again calmly.
      You repeat this every half an hour or every hour (until the child sleeps).
      And after a few hours or days or weeks the child learns to sleep at his / her own.

    Hi Emma and everyone. Our little one is 12 months old now and he falls asleep around 10:30 pm and wakes up in the morning around 9-9:30am (I know, it's late, but it works for our household as I work 8am-8pm and I cook the food for everyone, then give him a bath, lullaby and put him to sleep). However, he still wakes up twice-thrice and won't go back to sleep until I feed him milk, 6-7 oz each time. He eats well solids during the day, but the night he seems to be still hungry for milk, and the pacifier is not enough. Any help? Thanks!

    • @angheldee6562
      @angheldee6562 Pƙed rokem +3

      Try to give water instead of milk. Or give him the amount of milk he drinks at night during the day. Normally Babys tend to wake up more often during the night when they didn't get the amount of milk they needed during the night. That's why BF mamas wean the babys too early because they are exhausted of waking 10 times at night and during the day the BF only 3 times. Babys will need an amount of milk in 24h and when you don't give it during the day, they will wake up during the night for it. But if this still doesn't work put water instead of milk. If the baby has teeth already it's not good at all to give him a bottle during night ---> because decay! The milk spills all over his teeth when he drinks it. With BF Babys it's not the same because the breast goes way back in Babys through and he swallows the milk immediately and nothing comes on the teeth. ( I'm a dentist and did this year a course in early childhood caries)

    • @bianka4001
      @bianka4001 Pƙed rokem +3

      Leaving her in bed is one thing, but letting her cry no. By letting a baby cry it out you only teach your baby they can't depend on you and they are on their own abandoned. Which has nothing to do with self-soothing. Comfort that baby, they need us and won't understand why mum or dad are not coming to help. You can look up all the negative effects of crying it out and see for yourself. Apart from that I'd never be able to bear and let my LO cry on purpose without trying to console her, that'd break my heart. Really don't understand how anyone could do that and I am a high sleep needs person so it's not like I don't know how hard it can be with night wakings.

      Hey Shel, in newborn's their sleep is driven by sleep pressure. Their circadian rhythm is not mature enough at this point. It doesn't really become mature until 5/6 months of age. That is why at 5/6 months babies generally develop a more predictable routine. Hope that makes sense!

    Once again a great video. But I am a bit confused. Some people say you should do all you can to soothe a baby and babies don’t get spoiled. But also you say that we should not help them a lot with getting back to sleep so that they learn to do it independently. So in the end what should we do?

    • @teganmartin8751
      @teganmartin8751 Pƙed rokem +1

      There are two different schools of thought: one promotes sleep training and the other promotes helping baby get to sleep and allowing them to learn naturally over a developmentally normal time period. Some people think sleep training is damaging, others don’t. Of course, if you do sleep train you shouldn’t do it before baby is four months old. We tried Ferber and I couldn’t do it; I felt like it was damaging to baby’s mental state and I don’t see how babies can learn to sleep when they are in a state of hysteria. We then tried a more gentle method where I would go in after 30 seconds, then a minute, two minutes and then three (never more than three). This helped somewhat and it is easy to put my son down drowsy but awake now, but I’m not sure I would do it again. There are still times when he needs the extra love and affection, like when he is sick or teething, and at the end of the day, babies don’t keep. It also never helped with waking up during the night - He is a heavy wetter and often needs one or two changes, and he also still has one middle of the night feed. I expect he will continue waking until he is ready to night wean, and although it is difficult, I am okay with it. It is developmentally normal for him to do soand he won’t be a baby/toddler forever. I would recommend researching both schools of thought and doing what you think is best for your child and your family.

    • @teganmartin8751
      @teganmartin8751 Pƙed rokem

      Note to add: we only really tried sleep training because we had to send him to daycare and we knew it would make it easier for him to nap if he could already self-settle since most daycares seem to expect them to do this. Though it isn’t my preference I recognise you need to do what you have to when there are four babies to every one carer.

      @EmmaHubbard  Pƙed rokem

      Hi Pooja it really depends on lots of different things. Some bubs are happy with less sleep and some are not. If you find your baby is generally unsettled after a nap then she may need more sleep. It also depends on how many naps she is having during the day and how she is falling asleep. If she requires help to fall asleep (like a dummy, a feed, rocking etc) then she is more likely to wake after napping for 30 minutes because this is the length of a sleep cycle.
