  • The 5th and Final video on my Big Bore Royal Enfield 865 . The videos have covered the journey from original conception , through the design, test and build process and this video goes through my thoughts now , having ridden the bike for 6 months. What have I learned, what would I do differently and would I do it again? Hope you enjoy watching it as much as I have enjoyed the journey!

    When the young guy ask if it would go fast that must have brought a smile to your face! A waste of money! lol You should see what they do to tractors around here! One of my teachers use to teach kids how to restore old tractors in his shop class. The most popular class we had and now that those kids are older they love that teacher so much. Seeing it setting in your driveway with the vintage helmet is great. I bet you roaring around the neighborhood on the Enfield gets the Old Bitty's heart raising. lol Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

    It's good to hear your data on glazing and breaking-in first with mineral oil, then synthetic afterwards.
    There are a lot of theories and opinions on that, and I'm glad to hear your Real World experience.

    • @SvenTviking

      Does the bike need synthetic? It simply doesn’t rev high enough.

    • @daveinwla6360
      @daveinwla6360 Před rokem +1

      @@SvenTviking - The value of fully synthetic oil is its stable viscosity vs. temperature and its resistance to reduction of that broad temperature range due to oxidation resulting from heat. That means that any engine that goes from cold to hot in normal operation can benefit from synthetic oil.

  • @LethalD86
    @LethalD86 Před rokem +4

    It's be more accurate to say that the rings won't mate with the cylinder wall during the break in if the engine isn't run hard using mineral oil rather than synthetic, and that in turn causes blowback and then glazing

    So happy to see another video on this project. Previously I have mentioned that I am in Virginia, USA and bought two of the S&S 743cc ("750") big bore kits for my R.E.s.
    I also own two of the 865cc Triumphs and they are heavier and have one less gear so I am hoping my 750INT will have similar performance. The same size 90mm pistons that are in the S&S kit for the Royal Enfield 650s are the standard size for the Triumphs; on the Enfield it figures to 863cc due to the difference in stroke, shorter on the R.E. Thanks again for the update Michael, excellent video.

    I think if you are looking at a Royal Enfield and ask well how fast does she go you do not have a very good understanding of motorcycles or their engine designs. This is not a 200 hp 16k rpm revving inline 4 super sport motorcycle. If that is what you are looking for then you want a Yamaha R1.
    This particular engine design is a low revving tractor of an engine that pushes gobs of torque at lower rpms making it a hard accelerating bike in the low to mid range and makes for great fun on twisty back roads as you can use the engine torque to flip the bike around in the corners.
    I live in the USA and over here we do. Ot have near the tuning restrictions that I have observed of the builds in Europe. I have a dealership In my hometown that also is a speed shop that with high compression pistons, cams, some port work, 2 into 1 exhaust, and a power commander has squeaked 90hp and 90 lb-ft. of torque out of the stock 650cc bore. Now, to put that into perspective a 2022 stock Yamaha R1 super sport makes 198hp and 83 lb-ft. of torque and at much higher revs using two extra cylinders and 348cc more displacement.
    Now, using the big bore kit and performing very similar porting and head work with all the same add-ons and a custom tune, he is getting around 125 rwhp and 120 lb-ft. of torque which makes the Continental GT an absolute monster off the line. I was dumbfounded when he showed me the dyno sheets upon visiting the dealership but was even more impressed when he showed me the bikes and fired them up for me.
    Could you make this bike go 175 to 200 mph I suppose with the proper chain wheel setups and wheel and tire sizes sure, but my question is why do you need that much top-end speed and then where in the sam hell are you going to safely run 200mph on the street? The more you gear for top-end the greater your sacrifice in bottom-end grunt and launch capability. If the bike tops out at 125 to 135mph in stock configuration and then you triple your power output think about how much quicker you are going to reach those speeds providing you can keep the front-end on the ground and the back tire from melting out from under you. Just saying.
    This is not meant to be a Supersport bike it is for those that want to go tearup a canyon road, or twisty country road where quick throttle response, good engine braking, and plenty of low rev torque will pull you from one chicane to the next without ha ing to be heavy on the brakes.
    As far as lonv term reliability is concerned, I have run S&S performance kits in several Harley-Davidson motorcycles over the last 35 years and have had them hold up better than OEM Harley Performance parts. If you are going to take a bike and build it to play with you can be assured that S&S parts are going to hold up to the task. That being said, any part can fail if you beat the snot out of it and do not routinely maintain it, but if you are not on a professional circuit pushing it to the outer limit on every pass a regular off season tear down, inspect, re-torque and new seals should keep your ride thumping along for miles upon miles. If you neglect it and just beat it sooner or later it's gonna fail. Again, just saying.
    Anyway, I have a 2023 Continental GT ordered for the first quarter of 2023 and have the guys going to do the conversion and tuning to get me all the torque they can possibly squeeze out of it before I take delivery so around March to April I should have me a British Racing Green Mean Machine. I will try to get down to the shop and get video footage and dyno sheets for you all before and after the build up and then post it so you can see what these beauties are capable of. I will also document the cost and parts list provided they allow me to. Remember it isn't what motorcycle you ride on your journey, but the fact that you chose to ride a motorcycle on that journey at all that matters, and always keep the shiny side up. Cheers

Happily spending time and money on motorbikes isn't a waste of money, spending the better part of your life in the pub or the bookies is, or saving it all for HM Revenue and Cutsoms to take when you come to meet your maker! Visual mods look understated and tastefull, looks really cool with the lid and goggles hung on the mirror. You have to credit the Indian owners for the idea and financial gamble they have taken with this venture, however the buying public have shown that they want to ride this sort of bike, and that 270 degree twin is reason enough on its own. To what degree does this worsen the fuel economy of the bike?

      Takes it into the 50’s ridden enthusiastically but with a little restraint . 60’s if accelerating but legalish ..
      if you are worried about fuel economy , I would leave it as a standard bike 👍

      I haven’t tried it but , with the extra tooth on the front and the fact that it will rev out , in theory , 115 -120 . Standard bike has been tested at 110 ..
