I had tidying up competitions with my son when he was little and could count. We counted everything we took to it's right place. Or I counted the dishes I did and he took toys in his room. He shouted and asked me what number I was at, and he speeded up to beat me and win all the time. Quite fun! 😊

Speaking as someone whose mother, with best of intentions, never gave her kids chores (cause we will all have a house to care for one day), I think you are totally right Angie. Involve your kids in caring for your home. They learn the discipline of caring for their stuff & doing less fun things to help their space be comfortable, while also feeling like a valuable contributing member of the family. It also means they will know how to do the thing when they need to do said things as an adult. And competence as an adult is gold.
One channel I watch the mother basically thinks giving her kids chores takes away their childhood. That’s a bit much

Good comment! I never had chores either and though I’m sure it was well intentioned, it put me YEARS behind in being able to care for my home! Doing ok now…20 years later… but it was a steep learning curve.
YES! My mother didn't make us do ANYTHING! My brothers and I have all suffered the consequences of this! It's so hard for me to keep up with the house and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing for the first 10 years living on my own! It's disgusting looking back. I had no idea what it took to keep a clean and healthly space. My brothers are in the mid and late 30s and still live at home with my parents, and cannot keep a job. Now that I'm a parents I see that it's probably because we had 0 responsibilities growing up and they just crumble under the pressure of it all. It's so sad. I'm for sure going to give my children chores/responsibilities!!!

My mom had a stitchery that said “A home should be clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy!” I am forever grateful for her feelings on this subject. We certainly could have cleaned 24/7 with our family and pet situation but there are definitely things much more important in life! I could see the contrast in some of my friends homes, there was no relaxing really anytime in order to keep it show case ready at all times. Now I feel sorry for their moms that put that kind of pressure on themselves and consequently on to their family. That’s for your ideas and thoughts on this video.

As someone who had chores all my life I agree it is important to include kids in housework. I strongly suggest having everyone put their own dishes in the dishwasher after using and maybe letting the designated dish-washer choose a specific time to wash the rest each day. Leaving everything up to the designee and getting upset when it isn't done when the parent thinks it should be can cause a strong dislike of the task that lasts for years.
Can I just tell you how refreshing it is to watch someone relatable?! We live a similar lifestyle (well, we're half your family's size, but I digress) and enjoy our family's company, being outside, living with less (especially toys), inspiring work ethic, etc. We often feel like the odd ones out 'cause we're at the dinner table together every night (within reason) then outside chasing the chickens and playing ball afterwards. So sincerely, thank you for reminding me that our version of life, is just that, our version, dog hair covered and all ♥️ ...much love from Indiana!

Look into minimalism. Check out Dawn the minimal mom on here. I'm the same way and it helped a ton. Minimalism looks different for each person.
Checklists are a huge help to me. It is much harder to get distracted if you can see, in writing, what you are supposed to be doing. Plus getting to check something off the list is extra satisfying.

This is me…and the kids constantly disrupt as your cleaning a d so focus is shot. Yes, I never achieve clean but am always cleaning for this exact reason. It’s very depressing.

“Power Hour “ I love that title. It is strong and satisfying. My time is usually 3 o’clock to 4 o’clock in the afternoon but now I have a name to title that time . I LOVE it !
Over the years I divided up my house into 31 sections. I found this idea years ago probably on Pinterest or something. But it’s a 31 day checklist so I try to focus on one of the items on my 31 day checklist a day. To be honest I think in all the years I haven’t actually fulfilled the 31 day checklist in 31 consecutive days. But it keeps a guideline for me so at least over a couple of months I can tackle each space in the house and then I restart it. It has definitely kind of helped me have that list organized and when I have time or during the power hour I can tackle some thing off that list.
Yes yes less toys is so much better.
First of all it’s less overwhelming to the kids. Second of all how many times do you notice your kid pulls out a toy plays with it for 2 to 5 minutes on occasion maybe 10 minutes and then they’re running off to the next thing and before you know it the room is destroyed and so overwhelming for them to even know how to clean.
My tip for helping to eliminate fighting over cleanup time is doing a drawing for which room they have to clean. Y’all for ever did I hear ,” well I didn’t make this mess and I didn’t do it.” It has totally eliminated that to where they know they get the fun part of sticking their hand and drawing the piece of paper and see what room they’re responsible to clean. It has helped so much!!!
OK and my last tip has been a life-changing thing for me. There is only a handful of clothes that the kids have that we hang up in their closet. Those clothes are you know the nice clothes if we go out to eat or we go to church or do some thing like that. But the rest of their clothes are stay around the house play close. Over the years I have gotten to wear the pajamas that they put on at night is pretty much the clothes they wear the next day. So pajamas for them are more comfy clothes that can be played close too. Y’all I don’t worry about stain sticking these things or stressing over if they stay in the best condition. Ain’t nobody got time for that !
Also what I’ve done is they each have three bins fabric bins in their closet one is for depending on the season shorts or pants the other one is shirts longsleeve or short and then the third bin is for their underwear.
OK so how many times have you guys had your kids go through their dressers and unfold very quickly all of your hard work and sitting there folding their clothes up nice. Mine forever did that so I finally decided why fold their clothes these are they’re sleeping play clothes anyways it’s not they’re nice clothes that I keep unwrinkled.
So here is the revolutionary thing that has changed my laundry with the kids. They each have their own dirty clothes hamper. I only wash their clothes separately. I used to have one big laundry basket they threw it all in and I washed their laundry then it will take me a couple hours to sit and separate their laundry and fold them. But now I wash and dry their clothes separate from each other and then every Friday is “ workday “at our house. On work day is the only day of the week they get to earn quarters for different jobs so it kind of helps motivate them. But even my three-year-olds takes her clean laundry basket and their 2 clothes bins and sorts their clothes into the right Bin. You guys, this has been awesome it’s taken off probably two hours or more a week off of my time to deal with their clothes. They do their own laundry and it’s so great they’re learning how to sort and even use hand eye coordination and take responsibility for their own things. It’s been so great!!!!!!

We are the same.. vacuum every day, dishes always done through the day, beds made… I find that when things are tidy homeschooling is so much easier.. myself and kids all neat clutter free to focus!

We have 3 indoor cats and I too vacuum every day with my shark stick vac which is made for pet hair and although I have the fancy dyson stick one too-over the years I will say shark has been far better performing and much less expensive
This is the second instance in the past week where God chose to speak to me through others. On Sunday my pastor spoke on rest and now a video on cleaning. Both have been a thorn in my side. I literally just had a mental break down in the middle of my living room while sitting in a pile of my children’s toys. I’m so mentally and physically burned out.

We were raised up with this Golden Rule: Pick-up, Put-up As You Go. As soon as we were walking and started pulling out toys, we were taught to put them back-up when we were done. We learned you could only play with one set of toys at a time and when we finished, we put them back, before we took out something else. Not perfect when you were small, but that came as we learned. We taught our kids the same thing. Also, we were not allowed to eat or drink in the living areas, that was what the kitchen table was for.
Vacuuming everyday is a big one! My home feels clean when the floor is clean. Even if the kids don’t vacuum the greatest, it’s better than not vacuuming at all, and then I’ll get in there at least every second day to do a thorough job.
I love how you keep it real by not editing out your kids busting in on your filming. Its great that you're so down to earth and set realistic expectations for your home & your family. We use to do the 10 min tidy with a timer on when they were little and now it’s when company comes we can dash and get shoes,towels,etc picked up. Love power hour…morning and after bed….we think alike. We also never ate anywhere but kitchen area..I wasn’t about to trash the couches,etc…even grands know…we eat in the kitchen, no food in bedroom(ants would be another layer). Our playroom growing up was outside🤣

Yes to all of this! Love all of your examples and methods! Started getting my preschooler involved in everyday chores a few months ago and he loves being a helper and will do some things on his own now without asking just to feel like he is helping and has a sense of responsibility.

Yahoo!!! I completely agree!! I went to college for early childhood education and I have been saying the same thing about toys for years. Rotating toys is also a GREAT idea. The “new” toys that come back into rotation seem like new!!
I agree the toys can become overwhelming to even the kids when they have to many. I have a large family that is always eager to give to my kids. In order to not get too many toys from holidays and birthdays I ask my family to gift experience. get everyone a movie ticket, a gift card to go bowling, a day at the ice rink. or contribute to a larger ticket item like a ski pass, or a snowmobile for the whole family. (We live in a very cold climate if you can't tell)

I didn’t have a “playroom” growing up, mine was the middle of my bedroom floor! I shared that room with at least one sister, and at one point, two sisters, making it three of us sharing a room. I got my own room at age 13 when my older sister got married. My three children, on the other hand, had their own room from birth. There are four years between my first and second, and they wanted to share one bedroom and keep their toys in the other and have that as a playroom. Later, when our third was born, we moved to a 4 bedroom house. As the youngest got a little older, she was afraid to sleep in her room by herself, so the second and third shared a room and made the other one into a playroom, their choice (and these 2 girls are six years apart in age!).
As to laundry, my girls have done their own since the older two were 12 and 8. The oldest was upset that a certain shirt she wanted to wear that day to school had missed getting washed (it wasn’t in the dirty clothes!) so I took both girls out to the washer, showed them how to operate washer and dryer, then bought each member of the family their own laundry basket, including my husband! Oldest daughter complained that I still did the youngest child’s laundry. I told she’s 3, she can’t reach the knobs! 🤣 She did start doing her own at age 7 or 8. All three told me later on how glad they were I had taught them this very basic skill. They were so surprised when they went to college and had roommates that didn’t know the basics of doing laundry. I was a working mom all their growing up years and I couldn’t manage it all. Just that much help made such a difference. Each family member had a day of the week that was theirs and no other person could use the washer without the assigned person’s permission. It worked for our family!

I did rotating toy bins when they were little and kept drawers in the living room empty so I could put toys away quickly when they were toddlers. As they grew, we adopted a rule that they could only have one thing out of their room to play with at a time.
Minimizing their wardrobes was a lifesaver! Each kid and myself have one week of clothing per season. I like to do one load a day M-F with one assigned laundry assistant.

My toddler (well she’s 5 so I don’t know if she’s a toddler anymore but she’s been doing it a while) LOVES to vacuum, mop, wash dishes & fold laundry! I enjoy her helping me it definitely makes the chores take longer but that’s ok lol

I really enjoyed this video. About to welcome baby 2, and as a new to the SAHM mom world (with my first), I fell i to the toy trap because I was bored and wanted stuff to play with my son with! Now it’s interesting to see what he enjoys at 2+. I would love to see more content if on kids clothes, toys/crafts, and ways you include your little littles in helping around the house. (Mines LOVES to sweep and vacuum and help load laundry in, and cook, so want to grow that some more).

I very much agree, my little one will see that everything is organized so when she gets toys out she will actually go back and put it where it goes instead of throwing it somewhere…. She watches me everyday so now she wakes up and starts putting things where they go. She’s already leaning to be a clean little person. I love waking up to my clean kitchen!! Lovely! I'm all for less toys and responsible children. My older children grew up like that and they were so glad to always go outside to play, especially when I joined them. As someone who worked out of my home and a single parent, I saved myself from a breakdown by having them help doing things along with me and for themselves. It helped when we had to get ready to go on tours, because we worked together. We had a clean home to return to and relax together.

This is great advice! I also keep toys to a minimum or at least keep them all in a container and bring out one container at a time, have done this for years and we have kept the same toys for years because they seem like new if they are only bought out occasionally. An evening clean up time at 4pm for the kids toys or crafts and then an evening clean to get the kitchen and living area back to beautiful. It feels so good in the morning walking into a clean kitchen. We sweep and vacuum everyday, I like to mop every evening in the main kitchen area also. Love your style I do a lot of the same you have talked about today. Makes life easier to take care of lots of kids, animals and a home. 👍✅👋❤️😎

I wish more people were like you. I get so grossed out when I go to someone’s house and they’ve got a nasty floor or clutter all over. It’s disgusting. We have a large family and manage to keep our house picked up and tidied all the time. Some people just don’t make it a priority and feel comfortable living in filth. Then when their kids come over they treat your house the same. They’re destructive and messy. It drives me up the wall. It’s so disrespectful.

I’m am 100% on board with the limit toys… as a child I had soooo many toys and my family could have saved so much money and cleaning up with less toys!! Now that I’m a mom I have definitely limited toys and my little girl is super content!! When they have too much they get overwhelmed!! Also thank you for bringing up that kids should help with cleaning!! That is something that doesn’t happen anymore!! Moms aren’t the maids they r the teachers and trainers so that when that child grows up they can clean and keep a tidy home for their family!! Since my kids were little, I have noticed they are more creative & more likely to play in their room if I keep their toys count down. For Christmas, this year we purchased few “toys” & bought creative & sports stuff.

Been working on smaller amount of toys, and clothing for all of us, but it’s challenging for me because these past six years I’ve been through three pregnancies so my body’s “needs” keep changing 😂 I know once my childbearing years are done, I’ll be SO happy and content with just having a smaller number of pieces that I love ❤️
We eat all our meals and snacks sitting at the kitchen table. I’ve never had to clean crumbs or food stains off any other part of my house. It’s wonderful! And the kids love it. They each have their own special chair, placemat, napkin etc… it’s practical and brings the family together. Thanks for your awesome videos Angela!
All of my kids know that food stays in the “shiny Floor” area (kitchen and sunroom). They even told adults who visited! 😝 Ten minute Tidy, we do it every nighty! Toy rotation works great (wooden train set, castle, doll house shelf, etc,). Just like learning is a part of our lifestyle, so is cleaning and being good stewards of the things we have. Thanks for the great advice.

YES! I keep all of their toys in their bedroom but without a doubt, there are ALWAYS toys EVERYWHERE!! I definitely need to scale back on the toys. I did the smaller wardrobe and it's awesome!!! Honestly, our kids wear the same five things over and over lol and the rest would just sit there

Oh my, with the toys! Yes, every year, when my family asks about gifts for Christmas or birthdays, I tend to ask them to limit the toys and expand on books or supplies for homeschool. If they want to buy toys, I ask for them to be more educational or art-focused. We have this 8-cubed shelf that we lay on its side, and there are those fabric drawers that have stuff like legos, magnet tiles, gears, etc. Then, in our couch ottoman, we have kid specific toys in plastic baskets. We do have a ton of books! Ikea's Billy bookcases are awesome! We have 3 big ones and 2 small ones that we put on the wall, with loads of books, for them and for my husband and I! Plus, it's a beautiful aesthetic, which is a bonus. I try to keep their toys out of their bedrooms because they would play when they were supposed to nap/sleep for the night. Living room is the playroom. Lol.
As far as chores, I tried my best to start some form of chores for each kid at 5 years old. My oldest is 11, and she does dishes, puts away food after meals, and cleans up dog and cat poo. My next kiddo is 8, and she puts away dishes from the dishwasher and vacuums (yes, every day like y'all!) The third born is 5, and he's responsible for feeding the dogs and cats, picking up dog toys and kiddo toys, and helping his big sister move things for vacuuming. All three of them help Dad with gathering trash cans around the house to take out trash, and prepare the yard for mowing/maintenance every Sat/Sun. We have a 1-year-old and he's already learning how to put things into containers, but he needs a lot of guidance.
I think the best part of all this for me is that, they rarely complain about having to do chores. Maybe we're just not at that phase of life yet (no teenagers yet), but I try to let the kids know that this is how they practice for when they have their own home, and suddenly, it turns into them daydreaming about how they would have their home, what kind of home, where their home would be, and I love talking about that with them.

Yes my eldest is nine and puts his stuff into dishwasher.. Have help out, he is very good, done up a chart for points, homework, a good wash of hands, chore, dressing themselves, teeth brushed properly

Mama. I’m gonna need more about the toys. For example. How do you start limiting the toys? Kids that are used to having them, getting them…we don’t have much, be we have more then our little house can handle. I’d LOVE more on how you handle toys in your house 💕💪
This idea is probably known and utilized by many: when periodically purging toys, consider involving your kids from a relatively young age, depending on each child. Ask them to choose their favorite x number of toys and then ask which of the remainder they would like to give to a child who doesn't have any/many toys. The life lessons are self-evident. Looking forward to each video in the upcoming series. Go on with your bad self!

I completely agree about having less toys for your kids and for us that go for every one of us, the more you have the more you have to manage, we also live a very simple life on a 57 acre homestead and it takes up so much of our time, not complaining we chose it and love it, but the less stuff you have inside and out gives you more time with your family and animals and things you want to do instead of managing all the stuff!
Love this!!! I have a loooot of toys. We just left for a month and she didn’t play with any of the ones I brought. They are all super nice wood toys and lots of KiwiCo but dang it’s so much. Luckily she’s amazing at cleaning up and that’s not the issue. The issue is more so one of our 4 bedrooms is dedicated to toys only 🤣
