    The timeless place also relates to mithrix, the final boss of the game. He was betrayed by his brother and was stuck on the moon of the planet for god knows how long. Stuck surrounded by his designs that have no life without his brother. He is quite literally the king of nothing, which is his title in game. And in the end, its raining. I never realized how fitting the name was for the game.

      more than that, Providence didn't just give the creations life, he gave them "soul". without that component, mithrix's creations are nothing more than automatons. He's surrounded by things with no personality; no need for names. a word without nouns. a world of soullessness. without soul, his world is empty and lifeless. That is why he is the King of Nothing, because he is the king of no one.

  • @pyrotius
    @pyrotius Před rokem +557

    Its exciting to have you listen to this song! Besides being a banger, it is the theme of one of the final stages in Risk of Rain 2. Originally, the stage was a long empty walk to the final boss which felt like a great time to reflect on the current run and the journey it took to get there. What hit for me personally was that it is a remix of one of the main themes of the final level from Risk of Rain 1 which had come out 7 years prior. It was wild hearing it for the first time in game, it sent me back to when the first game came out and how things had changed for me since then. I do hope you get to sit down and enjoy the other songs Risk of Rain 1 and 2 have to offer!

    • @TinariKao
      @TinariKao Před rokem +16

      Goodness. Not only is it a remix, it was a touching song then, but it was ambiguous to what or who Providence was. As Risk of Rain 2 comes out, it fleshes out who Providence was. Self proclaimed protector of the weak and one who usurped their brother, sending them to the moon of the planet and locking him there, where his brother grew both mad and upset, not understanding why his brother did this to him.
      I think having a lot of the context just makes an excellent song so much better.

    • @MagicalMidgetPete
      @MagicalMidgetPete Před rokem +2

      Coalescence is the song this builds off of from the first game. The transformation between the two songs gives such well expressed context to the shift from providence as final boss in the first game to mithrix in the second while still sharing the same melodic themes.

    • @einaudi3901
      @einaudi3901 Před rokem +4

      Those are my exact thoughts, the pre bandit moon stage was a great time to reflect on your 2 hour run with your best friends and then the drop comes and it sets in that you're finally at the end and have one epic battle left to be fought like none you've had before. And it's Providences brother who Providence banished to the moon, and it's the entire story of both games coming to a climax as a battle between Mithrix and the person who killed his brother and captor, and if you kill him the world is changed forever and you get to go back home, and the music during your escape is an epilogue of this track and also brings in more elements from the rest of the games music and it's just an incredible end to the story of 2 brothers. Maybe in his next life Mithrix will learn to love worms

    When you get past the god complex you get in RoR2 from a great run, and you REALLY look into the story playing out in the background its very profound, deep and beautiful. Honestly Chris only amplifies the background story with his tracks, especially this one, as its the track that makes you go "am I the monster, was this worth it in the end?" and the original level of the moon giving you that long stretch of peace to walk through the quiet parts of the song and reflect. Only to be bombarded by the breath taking wails of the guitar and the last defenses of the Petrichor V, before you end it all. This song still just fills me emotion, especially since the beginning is a callback to the original final track Coalescence from RoR1 witch was a favorite between me and my friends when it released.

    • @potatocripp
      @potatocripp Před rokem +21

      Mad spoilers for RoR2's ending and general lore:
      If I remember correctly, the things that attack you in the primary ending of the game aren't necessarily the last defenses of Petrichor V, but "perfect" constructs created by Mithrix that were actually meant to populate Petrichor V-- but because his brother, Providence, disagreed with Mithrix in how life should be given to the planet, he was banished to its moon with all of his creations. Then, the player takes the only functioning transporter that can travel to Petrichor V's moon (a trip that can only be completed one-way) and, after amassing incredible power by this point, slaughters all of Mithrix's creations as well as the creator himself.
      This then crosses the line for the creatures of the Void, a kind of unknowable cosmic force that acts as enforcers of balance, which launches an assault on the moon and attempts to "capture" it and everything on it to prevent it from posing a threat to the universe. This is hinted at by the fact that if a run goes on for long enough, creatures of the Void will invade stages and attempt to "capture" you.

And this is the canon story, because the DLC, Survivals of the Void, tells the story about how the character survived their visit to the void after being captured on the moon.

    The way you broke down your personal interpretation of the song, elaborated on its philosophy and really explained a song (hell it could be considered a concept at this point) is something I wish more people who react to music would do more.
    As someone who struggles to identify emotions normally, its songs like these that help understand music and the emotions it can bring. You explained it perfectly, even related to the game. The struggles of life as time pass you by almost seem mechanical, you lose all sense of being (even in game as you almost mindlessly shred through the hordes of creatures simply defending their home)
    this song and the level it hosts makes you stop and take in the actions that lead up to this point and the characters morality of if it was worth it all. How perfectly it relates to the songs namesake makes you really think.

    It sounds like two brothers, chasing glass frogs in the sun."
    Risk of Rain is a very sad story, about betrayal, loss, and where the only villain is the struggle to survive your current ordeals.
    This song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the story all in one piece. The loss, the loneliness, the betrayal, and the anger, the rage at those once loved who chose to turn their back. And behind it all, a tinge of regret, wishing that, in some other time, in some other place, things could be different. That they could return to simpler days. The days of two brothers, chasing glass frogs in the sun.

    The name Con Lentitud Podersas means it "rained with powerful slowness" which is so fitting for the last stage as it rains heavily whilst playing this song.

    Chris's music always hits emotions in really raw, but also gentle ways. This one hits me with such a melancholy that you just can't turn away from. You're in too deep. There's no going back now- the only way is forward, through that pain in the timeless sea. The songs in the DLC are still fantastic, but it's so hard to match that wordless emotion as you approach Mithrix. I think Once in A Lullaby probably comes the closest?

    KNEW IT!!! I was so 99% sure that quote at the beginning was from Borjes: had to be. There is a sense that his work evokes that so very few spanish authors (or any writer) is able to express through language about language itself.
    And the way you recite it was so adequate for the song too. Risk of Rain, a game that is just looting, surviving, running and gunning yet when the music hits in that last stage makes you question so many things
    Thank for this gift Marco ❤️

    My man. You put into words what I think that song exactly stands for. A somber reflection as to why, only to be interrupted by the powerful remembrance of why. From a more musical standpoint, it reminds us of contrast. If not for the sad parts, would the epic parts really be all that epic? And vise versa, if all you know is sad music, is it really that sad then? It’s the general idea of two sides of the same coin, one cannot exist without the other. To exist without the other would be to go against the very nature of the cosmos (another motif very prevalent in the game: going against the inherent laws of the universe). This dichotomy is Risk of Rain. The whole series. Providence vs. Mithrix, Passion vs. Order, Nurturing vs. Analysis, Mortals vs. Immortals. The idea that everything has an opposite, and it’s in the existence of that opposite that it’s true beauty is found. Because if nothing lives that is the opposite of you, do you truly even exist then?

    Fun fact. For the level that this theme plays, there's a LONG corridor you have to run through in order to get to the actual level. It lasts for as long as the music build-up.
    However, due to this game's main mechanic of difficulty increasing with time, you'll probably never experience this properly, due to the movement items you've probably gathered in order to survive to this point in the run.

    I have to say I absolutely love the way the guitar melodies were written here, as well as the solo. It's a term that's been used a lot but it fits perfectly here: it just seriously sounds like the music is crying, and it's so beautiful, especially in the context of the mission itself. Up to this point you are, more or less, on what seems to be a rescue mission. People arrived here before you to investigate a world that was already explored (due to a crash landing caused by a seemingly chance encounter with the world's protector in the previous game) and have gone missing. You are here to find out why, and maybe rescue them if you can. By the end you are once again reminded of the lessons of the first game: that you, the player, are not the hero of this story. This story *has no heroes*, just... survivors. Survivors of war, of conflict, of the wastelands, of the many beasts that exist on this world, of the mysterious, uncaring void lurking beyond the universe itself. In the second game, even the original final boss was a survivor of sorts: his brother has already fallen in the first game. Mithrix is the survivor of his people, who... no longer exist, at least as they once were, hence his title as the King of Nothing. It's a very melancholic game, while still being incredibly action-packed and fast paced, and songs like this do absolute wonders to capture that feeling.
