You know, you hit a chord when you said that the music seems personal, because it absolutely is. I always strive to compose music that first and foremost I would personally enjoy. But the more I look at my work I realise that I actually write music _about_ me. Especially in a piece like this which is a literal retrospective of the past ten years of my life.

Coalescence was a banger, fans of risk of rain loved it.
Con Lentitud Poderosa was a Magical re-imagining of Coalescence that focused on the grief and solitude that resulted from the events of the events that played during the original, became so much wider known then even the risk of rain 2 community, and you could just FEEL how special it was the first time you ever made it to the moon.
Coalescence Returns is... one of a kind. I don't think i've ever heard a song this uniquely, powerfully moving, and it's a re-imagining of Con Lentitud Poderosa in a way that makes it call back to the original in a much grander and meditative way. Like your looking back on the past, and finally realizing the scope of what you've done, and how truly widespread and heavy it's ramifications were.

"You might need an umbrella, too." is likely just part of the weather forecast elements playing on the title, Risk of Rain (named such in that during your runs, things can go wrong at any time, suddenly). It's also worth noting tangentially that Returns introduces several new items not present in the original game, one of which *is* an umbrella which on pickup simply states: "They fear the rain."

To me (someone who knows absolutely nothing about this game), the slow start of the track sounds like grey skies and maybe some light droplets of rain, and the moment the track takes off with the vocal harmony sounds like a sudden downpour, and then the stripped vocals are the sun peeking through the clouds while the rain slows down. The entire track sounds like weather.

PLEASE make an episode on the original Coalescence, it’s one of the best pieces of vgm I have ever heard and Chris has stated he feels that you really need the gravity of it to fully understand …Con Lentitude Poderosa and, I personally feel, this song as well, as they are both effectively successors to it, though neither try to “replace” or “redo” it. Coalescence is, to me, at the very core of Risk of Rain as a whole, and the series and its music wouldn’t be the same without it.

It is just amazing to me how easily music can become part of someone's life and just completely let themselves go in the notes. It's part of what inspired me to dip into composing, because I want to give that experience to others as well and show them how far it can go.. and hopefully inspire an audience to create as well.
I already like writing stories, so why not take that a step further and tell them through music, through the emotions they convey?
I know I'm ranting at this point but it is something I've wanted to say for a while now. You have helped morph how I listen to music, leaning into what emotions they get off and losing myself in them.

To add to your point of spoken word over music being so impactful, using something so mundane as a weather report to cut right in the middle of the piece really makes it feel like it’s a song we’ve heard before. It instantly peels back the layers of instruments and voice and gives us something from life we’re oh so familiar with. It’s like it’s creating a melody of heartache for us we didn’t know we were already singing. And the melody doesn’t have any words either…we can sing it too. What a beautiful song.
Marco, you always remind me how much I love music, even if the music is from a medium we wouldn’t expect. Keep doing what fulfills you. Bless you and your family.

He’s genuinely one of, if not my favorite composer, and this track is perfect, especially as an (in training) vocalist. I know it’s not the last work he’s doing for the franchise, but this track feels like a send off to the franchise as a whole, and it is for Hopoo I suppose. I also jumped the gun on my comment, posting it before the ads had finished, but I wanna point out that I believe the song uses a lot of ukulele, which Risk of Rain features quite a lot in the item the Ukulele, for his music was electric. I always like to think this is one of the survivors (Commando, maybe Huntress on vocals) after the game. The game is very much painting you as the villain for slaughtering all of these otherwise docile creatures, so now here you are, resting against the deck of the damaged Contact Light, singing sadly as you come to grips with what you've *done* on Petrichor V. That concept helped along for me by this being played over the ending credits, after killing a god named Providence, slaughtering his creations, and leaving with everything in the cargo hold. Unfathomably amazing song, incredible work.

I've tried composing before, and the amount of time, effort, and learning it took me to make a garbage, barebones track is actually insane. It gave me so much insight into what goes into instrumentals and soundtracks. I have never heard anything else that has anywhere close to the kind of sound that Chris's work does. I'm half convinced he summons these melodies with black magic. the sounds I hear in chris's music can't been created by playing by a string attached to wood, or wind going through a pipe, or sticks pounding on a drum. they had to have been forged in fires, tempered with hammers, and cooled in rain.

I like to think that the reason the song sounds this way is because it is a rendition of the final area before the boss fight with Providence, Bulwark of the Weak. Where Mithrix would build, Providence would provide a soul to the things that Mithrix built. So I think that this piece represents the mourning of the creatures that were given life by Providence before you killed him and them coming to term with his death over a very long portion of time until all thats left is a faded memory of the one that once was there protector.

I always felt the main theme of the music to Risk of Rain was loneliness and isolation. You're stranded on an alien world with almost no hope of rescue filled creatures that want you dead and fragments of civilization scattered all over the surface from the cargo ship that you where on. This is only built upon by the so climb of collecting things till you feel almost unstoppable by anything but a god only to find out your god is an overloading worm that you never saw and it never saw you.

My god, this is the first time I've heard this (i still haven't beaten RoRR yet. It's taking time to get back into the swing of things) and man this is phenomenal. I've always loved the RoR soundtrack, and this just feels like the ultimate synthesis of everything the music of the game is about in one place. The callbacks to other pieces, the gorgeous vocal harmonies, the phrasing on the acoustic instruments, the mixing, everything about this is incredible.

I know there is like 20 other comments mentioning Surface Tension Returns, but when I was playing the game and heard that 2nd half of the song play. I was astonished on how crisp it was and immediately had to pause, look it up, and just listen to it on its own mid run.

hey there marco, i'm back lol.
very good video, as always, now, another thing that is completely different is something that i don't know if you did a video once, but is about The Witcher 3 soundtracks, like Aen Seidhe, or the Song of Sword-Dancer and of course Guillaeume versus the Shaelmaar, these pieces are very very good.

I know Marco likes music that is great for the gym and I've brought this game up before but after it's recent DLC it got a brand new set of music. That would be Undefeatable, Break Through It All, Find Your Flame and now I'm Here (Revisited) from Sonic Frontiers. They all feature Kellin Quinn and are some of the greatest boss themes I've heard in a long time.

Have you played risk of rain or do you know the story? Because your vibe check in the beginning talking about how the melody makes you feel loss and forced change is literally perfect for the vibe and lore of the game. I'm just saying because thats even more props to Chris that he made a melody that perfectly meshes with the game. I mean I guess that's an obvious thing to do when making a soundtrack lol. But idk this song in particular really makes me feel those same feelings.

i just got the info that fight crab 2 was announced and went back to listen to the fight crab soundtrack course damn is a banger and i need you to check it out, all the songs are good and very different from eachother so if you could check all it would be nice but at least give "Death Crimson" a listen, i will never forget how the opening of that level was, with you and your giant crab with swords at that point fighting tanks in a desert until you out of nowhere see 2 giant crabs on motocicles swinging chainswords and kusarigamas at you while you use the bottom part of the broken tanks as speed boost rollers and shoot at the crabs with the cannons of the laying tanks...
    god i love that game

Just a idea im throwing in the air for the my 2 favorite CZcamsrs of opera music! The name of the channel is: Doug Helvering. Have a nice day ❤

The Ambitious Brother, trapped in his kingdom:
...I know you can hear me.
I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, at first.
Perhaps there was a flaw in my design.
Perhaps it was one of your games. I was even willing to forgive you.
But no, I see the truth now. You trapped me on this forsaken rock.
    And for what?
Is this all for your little pets? The creatures you love so much?
Or, can I even call it love, when you would stab your only brother in the back?
How could you do this to me?
I, the only one who looked out for you after her death.
I, the one who showed you how to create?
I, who HELPED to CREATE the very power you use to invite VERMIN and
    PESTS to our home?
    I, YOUR ONLY BROTHER?
HOW COULD YOU LOVE THOSE IMPERFECT, FLAWED VERMIN BUT NOT ME? AFTER
ALL I'VE DONE FOR YOU? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?
    ...Say something.

Fun fact: did you know that the name Risk of Rain (RoR) was given to the original 2013 game because creators of the game just thought that it sounded cool.
Also you should review double fucking rainbow and double fucking rainbow returns but instead of listing to both songs individually watch a video of the final boss providence because in the original game his boss theme is double fucking rainbow and in the remake of the the 2013 game providence has a new 4th phase and gets a new boss theme for that phase.
Edit: in risk of rain returns providence main boss theme was changed to perception but it would still be kinda cool to compare double fucking rainbow and double fucking rainbow returns

honestly my interpretation with this song is a sort of send off to hopoo, i'm fairly sure this is the last full scale project they'll be working on now that Gearbox has the IP. it almost feels like Chris himself celebrating what they have done together.

part of me desperatly wants chris to stick with risk of rain going forward...but man this track really makes it clear that chris has done everything he possibly could for this franchise. this sounds like a goodbye; a celebration, and it would almost be inappropriate for chris to make anything else ror related after how much passion and emotion that he's put into this track and every other he's made this past decade. i'm not sure if he will or if he wants to, but of course i would be ecstatic to see him stay with ror. however, like i'm sure chris is, i am satisfied with what he's done, and would highly respect any decision of his to move on.
