- Have you ever made pickles at home? You should -- it couldn't be easier. Today, I'm slicing cucumbers into chips (this is a great shape to use with sandwiches, but you can cut them however you like) and pickling them in a vinegar brine. These tangy vegetables will be ready to eat after a few hours and will last in your fridge for the rest of the summer. Make them today and enjoy!
Sarah's Tip of the Day:
When pickling, cucumbers with fewer seeds and thinner skins work best. Choose small Kirby cucumbers or larger European ones.

I made this, but left out the dill because I like my pickles a little sour. I made with only 1/4 cup of sugar and added a few red pepper flakes, garlic, and black peppercorns. Incredible pickles and ready to eat the next day. The only problem I had is I drank all of the pickle juice before I could eat all of the pickles :-P
Thanks I'll definitely try it 👍
This is the beautiful thing about base recipes. You can stick to the principals and customize any way you want
this is my first time and I didn't have any of the spices that she mention in this video so im adding what you added cuz I also like my pickles to be sour!

Am I the only one that thinks she reminds them of Ms Frizzle from the magic school bus?

I wonder how the camera quality is so good even though it was 6 years ago????
Aman Kil because it was a tv programme i said was but i dont know if they are still on air
2013 wasn’t THAT long ago lol it’s not like this from 1985...
Because they borrowed it from professional porn stars
You can buy 6 year old cameras that are better than some cameras now

This technique is the truth! I ran out of regular white sugar so I used half white sugar and half brown sugar and the flavor was extraordinary. Will use half white and half brown from now on. Ate most of one jar the day after making them, so I'm not terribly concerned with the shelf life of these in the refrigerator.
+Charles Lee I must try this :)
+Charles Lee I replace half the sugar with sweetener. Works well :) .
TheWitchvortex I used only stevia in mine and they were delicious ⛤
thank you! good to know! i'm not a big white sugar fan so i'm happy to know i can use brown too!!
I guess it’s a good thing I only eat dill pickles since I’m diabetic!
I like savory more than sweet. I always add a few garlic cloves and a little alum along with some pickle crisp.
Pickle crisp is sodium nitrite which can cause cancer.
@@supercooled Yep, along with everything else on this planet. Just ask the State of Kalifornia. EVERYTHING is know to cause cancer....
JT 6188 are you a smoker as well? Everything in moderation right?
@@supercooled Moderation? YES - Smoker - NO !
JT 6188 well I have a jar of pickle crisps used once. My pickles still came out soft. False advertising. Or maybe I suck at pickling since this was my first time.
My sincere greetings to all who shared this video about pickling vegetables and also to people in CZcams who makes this sharable to distant learners like me. Undoubtedly extremely helpful information for cooking hobbyist! Thank you very much!
you could actually twist the jars closed right after you filled them with hot brine and stand them on a kitchen cloth, lid side down, it will preserve them for 6-12 months. Just buy the twist jars with that little button on the lid. Leave them upside down to cool completely up to 24 hours and after that turn them right side up and you'll see that the "button" on your lid is concaved. you dont even need to refrigerate them, just store those in a dark and cool area of your house (i keep them in a pantry)
This is exactly what I hoped the video would show. But they didn't, so thanks for the tip!
sorry I would not trust this botulism is scary and doing this doesnt preserve them like if you water bathed them.
Nick k , wouldn’t the acid, and refrigeration keep them safe?
@@Alex-qy8fm Possibly, but i wouldn't trust it. I'd rather keep them in the fridge than risk getting botulism poisoning.

I’m eating these pickles I made a few months ago. They are fabulous, Sarah. Just remind me of the recipe my grandma used ! Thank you.
Great tutorial. If you don't like sweet cucumbers then don't add the sugar or as much. Glad someone asked about using brown sugar as I was thinking of trying it. Not sure if I will like them or not but will try them. Don't be nasty she is just putting her recipe down for us if we wish to try it. Ok saying Cuces sounds different but we all have our little pet shortcuts. Thank you Sarah
thanks for the no sugar advice I'm not a fan of sweet pickles.. so no sugar for me BUT... think I'll try using some rice vinegar in mine! and garlic too...
It's not cuces...it's cukes. That's the way i've always seen the shortcut for cucumbers spelled.

What an awesome tutorial. I am a small space veggie gardener and working my way to be as self sufficient as possible.

Great to keep on learning,,each and every day.

I like your straight-to-the-point instructions. I love bread and butter pickles and never realized it was celery seeds which give them their unique flavor! Brava!
Great recipe Sarah. Thanks for posting!
I love this recipe just used a little less salt, didn't have any mustard seed so I used caraway seeds, it taste better than store bought ❤
I like her teaching style...upbeat not bland, direct!
Great vid and Thank You for the recipe! I just planted my first raised bed veg garden and my cukes are ready to harvest...I'm so ready for B&B pickles! I'm going to do Garlic and Dill too
I love your tips and your recipes
Thank you a lot
Wow some very negative people leaving comments ! I liked youe video and your hair! Very simple recipe, and i like the fact i can just whip up a jar or two with out making a big batch, sweet! Thank you Sarah
I made the cucumber pickles today. I used a commercial pickling spice mix, but apart from that followed the recipe instructions exactly. The brine was sufficient for two large English cucumbers. I first only added 1 cup of sugar but tasted it and it wasn't sweet enough for my liking so I added the other half cup. It was super easy to make these pickles.
I LOVE pickles! I am sooo doing this today, thanks!!!
Thank you very much mine was Carrots, red onion, jalapeo',
Thank you for sharing I love it .... I'm going to do this
Thank you for sharing. I was looking long time for this recipe. Thank you again. Greetings from Holland
Thank you for this fast and easy recipe for a beginner like me.
When using dill for pickles the best flavour comes from using the flower heads instead of the stems & leaves. I use both because I still like seeing the dill sprigs. 👍🏻🖖🏻❤
Dill -- the little spring that could. And did.

Thanks for the recipe this is what I need to do my cucumbers.
Nice job Sarah.quick and easy, but good.
Thank you! I just made mine but no sugar! I can’t wait until they cool I want to eat them already
Does the hot brine make these wilt (soft)? I've only used cool brine.
You are so much fun and informative. Love your look!
I've got my pickles salted and getting them out the frig and place in the small jars for a quick pickle. Yea!😄
I love this recipe! I made it right after watching this video and they turned out great! Thank you for the awesome videos! I always look forward to watching them!!
are you ther ???????
are they crunchy
I tried this recipe with apple cider vinegar....thumbs up, sooo good.
Sonja M. can i boil the vinegar
@@ravisaini8164 Um, I followed this recipe the same...so yes.
Great video and tips. Thank you so much.
Thank you. It sure will taste great. Quick and easy.
When can u start eating them?
How long can u keep them in fridge? Thks
minimum 3 days to one week. Keeps for 1-2 months.
Hi. I never picked anything before. This is a no -threatening process to begin my pickling journey. The only question; how long should they be in the fridge before eating them?
This exactly what I want to do thanks for sharing this video.
I made this one for new neighbor gifts!! Very well received !!
I would say "ohh pickles, I love pickles. Thanks very much. These will go nicely on my pulled pork sandwiches." But as soon as you left... the pickles would be thrown in the trash and I would buy a jar for $3.
this is a great recipe ! i used apple cider vinegar and added onions to the mix
I only eat dill pickles-can I use the same brine without the sugar or do I need to use pickling salt?
I have the same question.
I just love your video. Thanks so much for sharing.
you are super cute to watch and fun. my daughter grew a pickle patch and now we are using your video to pack them .thank you so much. LonnieRay and Mindy Maray
"Put them in your fridge and you can enjoy them for the rest of the summer" Thanks Sarah!
Love Sarah's enthusiasm, even when the recipe is not for me. I'm adding my voice to the chorus of commenters who dislike sweet pickles. Marvelous that Sarah mentions it's possible to cut down on the amount of sugar. I'm sure the Internet has many unsugared brine recipes that work fine with the method she demos.
Thanks for the recipe. I just made this morning but only with applecider, sugar salt green chili and garlic. After the pickle done, can I use the brine again to make again ? Thanks !
Sarah, this recipe looks like it would satisfy my taste buds as I love bread and butter flavor.TY
I made it!.,its awesome!
Everyday Food how long do I leave the pickles in the fridge for, I've been advised that it can take up to 4-6 wks before they are ready to eat(flavour wise)
+Poppy Pocket they will be ready in a few hours, one day at most. I actually use cold brine + spices and boil the jars.
+Poppy Pocket I would eat them the very next day.
We love pickles 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
Thank you so much for the recipes♥😋
Excellent video, thanks for the information.
OMG it's Mrs. Frizzle!!! Magic School bus FTW!!!
Yes!!!!
Don't care for sweet pickles myself. I use a giardinera approach and nothing is cooked. Like these, they are strictly sort term refrigerator pickles. But, the are amazingly fresh and crunchy. I'd love to try the brining technique though and will give these a try...sans sugar. Thanks for your great videos!
Can you use the same sweet brine for pickling whole garlic cloves? I usually buy them, but I'd like to make my own.
Made them today! Delicious!Thank you Sarah,A hit at our house!

This is a great recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Referencing this recipe tonight... because I wish I would have made at least three times as much (I used two cucumbers)... It's super versatile and also the perfect beginner recipe in if you have ever made pickles
I've seen people use both the hot and cold brine to pour on the cucumbers.
Can anyone tell me what the main difference is between the two? Is it just the texture of the cucumbers or is the taste different?
Cold brine will take longer to pickle the cucumbers. But they both work well.
Doesn't the addition of the hot liquid cook the pickles? Can the same be done with cooled liquid? The reason I ask is I like my pickles very crisp. Thanks.
yeah mate could be done with cooled liquid you will just have to leave them soak a little longer
Yeah the food channel said put the full bottle in a cold bath after the hot liquid.. It cools the liquid in the bottle.
hot = 1 week to eat
cool = 3 weeks to eat
What an incredible coincidence. If I remember correctly, you film most of these vids in one day, then just post them Mon-Fri. Yesterday, I asked for a vid on pickles, and voila, here it is today. I guess great minds think alike. Actually, mine is only semi great. Thanks, Sarah, you're wonderful.
How do I store these after making them? Fridge or cupboard and how long do they last unopened/ Thanks.
This is the best ! And you are a lovely young lady too.
Just made some, How long do they last in the fridge? And how long do they last after opening ?
I would like to know that as well
Amazing recipe thanks a lot 🙏🌻
2018 and still love to watching Sarah.
can i use the same ingredients to make pickled jalapeno ?
Making pickles is super easy, barely an inconvenience
Oh really?...
We love this mumb dude... U ARE ABSOLUTELY GREAT!
Thanks. I will try it. Simple and easy.
I like video. Nice description with nice describer.. Superb.. Pickel
Sterilize the jars and lids, put the lids on while everything is hot, and as long as the button vacuums, you don't have to worry about how long you keep them for until you break the seal. =p
Your method is called "canning." Sarah is just showing us a quick way to do it! Many different methods can be used.
Tom Evans Mr.Obvious.
You’d still need to water bath them, even if they seal, to be safe. Late, I know, but... people should know
Wow! Looks yummy, thanks for sharing!
Love your video's. so informative.
The first time she said "cuc's" I felt like my soul left my body
It's 'cukes' and it's a pretty normal term. Never heard 'cukes and zukes'?
American?
If she says 'cyukes' one more time, I'm gonna scream.
Jonathan Longden here aaaaahhhhhh
I scream for yua mate
Cyukes
I was looking for this comment hahaha
If one more person gets upset because she calls cucumbers CUKES, then I'm gonna scream. CUKES is a word that even the best Chefs say....Millennials LIVE to shorten & make up ridiculous words which is more irritating than a lady demonstrating how to make pickles, which BTW, you don't have to watch her video. I apologize in advance that I shortened "By the way"
About how long would they take to become pickles also any ideas on how to process them? Thanks
I love pickels, I cannot live without it.
Hi! I have a question: Is there a specific reason to pour the hot brine over the cucumbers rather than having the brine cool down? Thanks! Love your video...and from one red-head to another...LOVE YOUR HAIR!
The hot brine cooks the vegetables, kills bacteria and starts the preservation process.
How long should you leave them in?
Love it this is really awesome 💓
Beautiful pickling tutorial
omfg I’m growing out my hair, and I hope I have her hair
I GIVE YOU FULL FIVE ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ FOR THIS SUPERB UPLOADING.. THANKS FOR THE RECIPE ☑️🖐️✔️🆒
would it be okay if i didnt boil the brine ?
i just made them but i forgot to boil the brine ..
Is it necessary to heat the mixture? Have you tried substituting raw honey or maple syrup for the white sugar?
Can you pickle food with a brine of just vinegar + water?
I want a simply pickled food! :)
You could, but it won't have much flavor.
If you use a mandolin, you'll get more even slices and it's way, way faster!
Making pickles is simple. I've made dills, bread & butter pickles, mixed vegetables, pickled beets, and pickled onions. Make great gifts.
I have done (for the first time) pickled beets, and they turnout a little salty. How can I fix it? Please help me! Thank you!
Thanks! It helps me a lot😊
The word “cucs” makes me irrationally angry
😂😂😂😂
Perfect 100 likes
I though you just had to put cucumbers into salted water and wait 12 hrs to make pikles
What makes me RATIONALLY angry is that you and some others are so upset that this lady, who YOU have chosen to watch to get a recipe on her channel, dares to use a CHEF TERM for cucumbers....Then to top it off, those who are criticizing her can't even correctly spell CUKES!

Keep looking at the camera while slicing like u do... There will be pickled fingers soon in that jar ;)

Love pickles. ...my favorite food. Yummmmmmmm
Id love you to do a salty brine!! Veggies arent suppose to be sweet : ) lol
You do the salty brine and let us know how it is! :)
Who says? Lots of regional pickling recipes call for a sweet brine.
to all the comments about the sugar... she is essentially making bread and butter pickles. Your kosher dill pickles cut out the sugar...cuts out the turmeric... adds salt to the brine and just sticks the pickles in the jar.. no real prep. Btw. 2 weeks in the fridge then will be good to eat
This is good lesson so far learned. What is the shelf life of this pickles please?
Lovely great I need this recipe thanks osome
