- In this video we show how to remove the transmission pan and change the shift solenoids and torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid in Pete's 2004 Silverado 1500 LS 4x4 with the 4L60E transmission. This process should work for other Chevy transmissions as well and most automatic transmissions.

The best video I've seen here. Didn't know it was this easy. Dealer wanted to charge me $2000 just for what you showed. Thank you.
Thanks! Best of luck with it!
Surely 2 grand wasn't just changing solenoids right
@@james10739 I wouldn't be surprised if it was only for solenoids. Dealers are insanely overpriced
frickin dealers
I'm here because a transmission shop is trying to get 4.000 dollars saying he's going to rebuild my entire transmission in one day.. I think he's probably a crook just going to replace these solenoids and charge me for a rebuild.
They put that stupid shift linkage bracket they're on purpose. Id love to meet one of them gm engineers on a dark alley one time.
Yes
The 90s gm engineers were way nicer than 90s/2000s Ford engineers. Ford can kiss my ass with all their unnecessary bullshit.
Just did this. Only had 2 and 3rd gear with a code p0753. Anyways changing solenoids fixed my issue thanks for this tutorial. I would like to add though, I didn't need to remove or loosen exhaust at all. Shift cable bracket has two t40 bolts on side that are very easy to remove. Once removed the bracket my pan came down nice and smooth 0 issues. Thanks again for this video. You da man
Nice! What were you symptoms before? Was your atf fluid bad?
@@KollynJ my symptoms were I only had 2nd and 3rd gear. Lol my fluid was fine. It was the solenoids that were the problem.
This weekend I also have the same issue the p0753 and I have a mild tune so I'll also be installing a Corvette servo if the parts come in this weekend the transmission feels strong I just don't have OverDrive so it's like driving a 80 Chevy truck on 35s
I love your GM Chevy content, I always found useful to drop an extraction dipstick and suck all the transmission fluid out. Makes it much easier in terms of avoiding a mess.
Great Idea Man. Thank you
Ya I've done that my suburbans have plugs but they are retarded tight and stripped I welded a nut in one and put a new one in and on my Silverado I installed a plug kit because ya it sucks doing it full
Y’all make it look so easy, makes me jealous about y’all having a lift. I’m about to embark on this journey on my 07 Yukon xl laying on my back on the ground. But very informative and I’d like to thank y’all for the simplicity of this video
A lift definitely makes it easier. We are fortunate for sure! Best of luck with it!
Same here with my 05 Tahoe, good luck
Did that yesterday for about 6 hours gotta change solenoids to because I have code being thrown so another 6 hours
Update, after being thrown around by various parts stores and finally finding a transmission specialist, I’ve come to realize that I have a 6l80 and it’s a complete part that’s a tad more expensive than just the solenoids. On top of that once it gets fixed it has to be programmed by a g.m.c dealer. So I just said screw it and sent it away to be fixed by someone else.
Interesting. I didn't realize the 6l80 had been around for that long. Glad you got it figured out!
I found it helpful in the event I ever have to do this job. The part about watching for spring loaded ejections is priceless. Thanks ! :-)
Haha 😂 glad to help!
Thanks for the video. I’m going to have to replace my solenoids because I’m getting a P0796 code saying that it’s stuck “Off”. I have a 2012 Yukon Denali and this video just showed me that I can do it myself and save money. Appreciate it!
Quick tip, while you got the pan off, measuer a tupe small enough to go down the dipstick tube and just past the end (inside the pan) use that to pump the fluid in and itll be easier to read your fluid level
Quick tip* the bolt for the linkeadge bracket is a t30 torq. It's usually easy to remove with a ratchet and t30 tip. I don't recommend bending the bracket to get the pan out. Atleast try to do it that way before prying on the transmission 🙏
Great video, my truck was stuck with just 3rd gear…I had 1st and 2nd if I manually shifted there. Video, couple jack stands and 3hrs from start to finish and my truck runs the way it should again. Thanks so much for the good detail and step by step repair!
Why do you need to change the 23 or clutch solenoids?
Not enough information and most solenoids replaced in videos never even mentioned or talk about them, only the shift solenoids!
Reasons?
Excellent video, thanks for not including some crazy music like most, I am going to tackle this on my 2006 Silverado 5.3 with a 4L60E
No problem! Glad it helped
Does rattling under my 2001 chevy silverado mean it's the rear end or the transmission
Great video with good details, especially the steps to get the pan off! Just got two solenoids replaced last night. loosed two exhaust hangers (in the middle), then used a ply bar in the middle of exhaust pipe (passenger side - somewhere between two exhaust hangers that were loosed) with help of a floor jack to keep the pipe lower just so I only needed to handle the cable bracket with one hand and get the pan off with the other hand. One shift solenoid was bad (open circuit) and the other was good (22.1-22.3 ohms), but changed both anyways. Thanks again for the video which made my job much easier!
What symptoms was your truck showing
@@victorbeltran9344 no noticeable symptom when I drove it, just thrown a transmission code that did not pass emissions test. I recalled code complained a faulty solenoid A, but I just replaced both solenoid A and B, also trans filter as well since I had to dropped the pan anyway.

Buy a mighty vac or one from grainger long rigid tube into the trans pan, suck all the fluid out before removing pan
@@TattooTonyAlton yup that’s what I did, but I used a small hose and a spray bottle head it took alittle while to get it all but it worked
What were the symptoms/issues/faults?
Thanks for the great video, i saved it to my favorites.. My 2006 has 186k and the motor & tranny both work just fine, but I'm constantly worried about what could go wrong next and don't like going on trips more than 60 miles from home just in case. This is going on my list of things to do for sure.
Glad to help!
I had a problem where whenever I get past 30mph it would go into like a false neutral. I replaced all the sensors and filter on the ground getting covered in ATF. It's FIXED AND SHIFTS LIKE NEW 👍 I'm very happy. You can do it just a pain.
I just replaced my A&B solenoids , filter and fluid. It didn't fix my issue. But I didn't replaced the other 2 here. I think I'm gonna drop my pan again and get them 2 in and at least take a swing at it before I replace the Tranny.
Mine gets to almost 40mph and it starts to Rev high like it's getting nowhere, or like it not going into the next gear. Like if I get it high Rev and release off the gas, it seams to go down, then kick in. But it revs high still after the kick in Idk? I thought the A&B, but I didn't get the 3-2 down shift and the other here. So maybe I'll swing at that and see If I have your outcome. Wish me luck.
@@GreyGhost615 how'd it go?
@@martincorrell950 I haven't got a shot at dropping the pan again yet to change the 3-2 down and the TCC solenoids. But I've also been digging around. Just learned this the other day but a quick and efficient way to remove old gasket material is to hit it with the wire wheel from a bench grinder, makes life so much easier than sitting there with a blade and solvents just thought I’d throw that out there for anyone in the comment section. great video very informative look forward to more videos.
Just ensure you wire wheel away from the exposed components. No need to put crap in your transmission.

Very helpful.I'm having the same issues with a Firebird.Same 700R4,not as complicated as I thought, thanks
The shifter linkage bracket on my 03 Yukon XL (2wd, 1/2 ton) was actually pretty easy to move. There is 1 Torx T-30 directly over the rear driver side pan bolt on top of the transmission flange. The other is two bolts forward (one bolt on the pan between them) both can be hit pretty easily from the tail end of the transmission. Remove the one on the corner, and loosen the one forward of it, and the bracket swings completely out of the way. Don’t even have to touch the exhaust flanges, and no wrestling to bend the bracket back into position when your done. Much easier, imho.
Great video, guys. And best of luck to all y’all digging in and fixing this yourselves.
LOL. Well, it was either the $120 in parts and doing the work myself, or Taking it to the transmission guy and spending $900. In hindsight the job was way to easy for me justifying paying ANYBODY $900 to do the job. As inexperienced as I may be, it only took me (cumulatively) 1.5 hrs.

I switched over to vacuum extraction for oil changes a number of years ago. A nice side benefit is, of course, doing extraction for transmissions too!
It's nice to suck out most of the fluid before dropping the pan. It makes things a lot easier, cleaner, and far more pleasant!
Yes very true. Need to start doing that as well
How much does one of those "suckers" cost?
@@FunDuudeharbor freight has them $100 or so
I use pans with drain plugs. About 30 bucks on Amazon.
@@DocZoidberg549 Yep! I have such a pan installed too! They're very handy if going in and out frequently for tuning and such.
Still, the vacuum extractor is nice since simple oil changes and such can be done without jacking up the vehicle... Once a year or so everything makes its way up to the sky for routine brake maintenance and such. Then, a full pan drain and filter change can be performed.
Not sure if it’s exactly this but I got all the symptoms. Thanks

even lying on my back with the 4wd drive shaft in the way, I take the top bracket bolts off instead of bending the bracket. It's not too hard especially if you change the torx head bolts to regular 13mm head bolts. The deep pan clears the cross over pipe well with out messing with the exhaust. This is on my 2006 GMC Yukon with the 5.3
Do they not make these pans with drain plugs so you don't have to make a big ass mess??
@@franklee9127 Yes they do. I bought a pan for a 2003 GMC and it has the factory drain bolt.

Hey thanks! I’m not sure if your truck is the same as my 2004 hummer h2, (mine has a bolted on cage)but to avoid the exhaust and that bracket, I used your method to drain most of the one side. 2015 Chevrolet Suburban 2wd drive, 5.3 V8 (162K miles). Gear upshifts perfect but when it comes to downshifting on lower speed i.e stopping for a red light or stop sign it downshifts so hardly, I was wondering what could be the issue. Sadly it may be a deeper issue :(
I think there is something to be mentioned here in labeling what is what. The first solenoid you took out appears to be the TCC/PWM solenoid; which you did identify. Directly over the connector for that, is the torque converter clutch solenoid valve which is being held on by those two black bolts and bracket that comes attached to that solenoid. If you come up with a code for the TCC solenoid; you might want to replace the TCC solenoid valve as well
I have a 94 GMC Sierra C3500. Got a code 39 and can't seem to get much information about it from anyone so far. It says that it is a Torque Converter clutch sensor. Where is located on my 94 transmission? Is it in the same place as shown in this video?
@@michaelpearce8661 Should be in the same place. If you are going to fix it yourself, I'll tell you it made it a heck of a lot easier on me to simply buy a new transmission pan. Hey thanks for taking the time to make this video much appreciated. I think this is ultimately what I am going to have to do with my 99 two door Tahoe. I replaced the fuel pump yesterday and drove it to work and it takes off from a stop just fine but if you push the accelerator hard to pass or let's say getting on to the interstate it acts like it's in neutral. If I back off and feather the throttle I can get to a higher speed. I am hoping to get some feedback on what you might think the issue is? I am going to check the simple stuff first.. The fluid, grounds, electrical harness for any rub through, linkage, and the throttle position sensor. I am almost positive that it's going to be the A and B shift solenoids.
I have the same issue with my 2000 gmc. I was thinking the wire from the throttle body that goes to the tranmission might be slacking. I'm taking my tranmission pan off tomorrow and replacing the filter and whatever else I can and i am going to see if it improves. Does your vehicle rpm go up past 4000 or does it struggle with that when you floor it?
@@tristinbrietzke5649 noticed that my rpms don't spike but it acts like its in neutral until I back off of the accelerator and feather it. I am going to start with a fluid flush then if that doesn't change anything I am going to do the same thing. drop the pan and replace all the solenoids. Also getting a pan with a plug. Easy to drain the fluid and I figure save some time cleaning the old pan. Now to only find the time to get at it...lol
@@dustinw5527 yeah we are going to do the same here when we have $$ to do it. Let me know if it fixes your issue!! These you tube people dont really have the time to ever respond to us commenters lol. If I get it done before you I'll let you know the outcome!

I also would like to drop the pan and actually have the solenoids in my hand before heading to the parts store to compare them... my luck I would end up ordering what I think is right and end up having to make multiple trips to the parts store.
@@dustinw5527 lol that always happens. Best to take the part with you!
I have a question if you could kindly answer So I have a 2012 Mazda 3 skyactiv automatic hatch right, and one day I decided to try out the manual-mode but when I moved the knob to shift it wouldn’t change gears, do you have any idea on what the problem might be?
Which way were you trying to change gears, downshifting or upshifting? the car may not let you downshift depending on the speed and the RPM. The computer doesn't want the engine to over-rev so it will prevent shifting to too low of a gear. if you were already in the top gear and couldn't shift up then there is no where else to go, otherwise it depends on how the manufacturer set the gearbox up and how they allow you to upshift.
What does rattling under my 2901 5.3 silverado mean ?

But regarding the two solenoids A,B at the front of the box could have used better lighting and a close up of the solenoids being taken out.

What was the problem before you replaced the solenoids?
My 2002 chevy suburban check engine light is reading the P0740 code with is the torque converter solenoid should I change all of the other solenoids also or just that 1 ?
Since you’ll be in there, might as well change them all because it would suck to have another fail late and have to remove the pan again

Well done video, and very informative and explained well, I’m wondering if these could be the cause of my trucks issue...
My truck shifts into gear great with no hard shifts or slips, but when I try to take off in drive it’s like I’m trying to take off with a manual transmission in like 4-5 gear, so I have to manually shift down to 2nd then it will take off but sluggishly, but once you get going you can shift into drive and cruise around fine.
The issue to me seems more electrical than mechanical to me atleast
Did u ever fix it?
@@Eastsidee817 im interested in this as well, my is sluggish to take off and once im going its fine but if i start up a hill it feels like it doesn't want to shift down and i start losing power

@@Eastsidee817 I don't know about that guy, but mine was doing this once every several months, after rolling to a stop. Felt like it was in 3rd gear. After changing the fluid it never reoccurred, so it seemed like a bad fluid issue. Pretty sure it was originally 192k miles.

Great tutorial but most sources I've come across say that when you get a 0756 code, it typically means you need to replace or rebuild the tranny. Any way of knowing if new solenoids make good sense?
Good question. Did you find your answer? It's an inexpensive gamble to replace the solenoids and fluid though, so I figure I'll try that first.
@@paxonearth mine put out another solenoid code the next day, this time 0751. Then I lost all gears except maybe 2nd. I towed it to a transmission shop. @@paxonearth I seem to recall another channel showing a way to test the solenoids with a meter without removing the pan. It required an electrical diagram. Post up if your repacement works. I just had a feeling I wasnt going to be that lucky and have a code actually diagnose a problem rather than just a symptom.

Awesome video! I’m getting ready to change the solenoids in my ‘13 4.8l Chevy. I’ve got the 4L60E in mine, but mine isn’t a 4x4, is it safe to assume all the solenoids are the same? I plan on using your video as reference, while doing it.
Chevy engineering and their bright idea for chris sake at least put drain plugs on the 🍳🥘🙈
hardly anyone does sadly.
So the A & B solenoids are shift solenoids. Good to know. I watched another video where this wasn't mentioned so I'm glad I watched this one.
Edit: filling through the fill tube sucks. One thing that works sometimes is drying the dipstick with brake cleaner. The surface tension of the oil can (hopefully) keep the oil from covering the dipstick. Of course patience helps too. Go put your tools away, clean up the spilled oil, etc. while waiting for the oil to drain down. Maybe they need to coat the inside of the dipstick with something that lets the oil drain off faster.
Yeah I use that trick too. Just make sure the brake cleaner is fully evaporated before sticking it back down the tube.
Why did you put your tools away while waiting for the oil to drain? You need them to put it back together.
@Timothy Geiger Filling the transmission is the last step, so you shouldn't need any tools.
@@timothyball3144 you missed what i said. The comment was made to clean up the tools while waiting for the oil to drain. That means you still have all the work to do. You drain the oil first, BEFORE taking it apart.
@Timothy Geiger Notice my first sentence about filling the transmission. Although I should have said filling through the check tube.
Thanks really good video
Glad it helped!
I pulled my pan today and didn't need to move the exhaust at all, just needed a friend to bend the bracket while I pulled the pan
What year and type of truck/SUV do you have? I got an 03 5.3 Yukon XL.
@@skud1971 an 05 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 5.3 as well
If you remove the front driveline on 4wd models, you can access the two bolts on the shift linkage bracket. These bolts require a 40 torx bit and a swivel head ratchet
Have these parts changed in the 2014 Silverado transmission? I looked mine up and the 4L60E parts are the only replacement parts the web shows
Nice job .. Thank you
Glad it helped!
@@TheSundaeDrive @ those 1-2 solenoids are the same part number???
I am currently changing shift solenoids on my 05 Silverado. In the video you didn’t show what the 3-2 solenoid looked like. Does it look identical to the torque converter solenoid? I’m having a hard time finding the part at parts store. 3-2 solenoid was found.
I recently replaced the shift solenoids in my 97 when changing the transmission filter. One of shift valves popped out like yours did. I put it back in and installed the new solenoids. I put everything back together and now it wont move in reverse. Drive works though. Any idea what i may have done wrong?
thank you for your video good 👍
Thank you for the great content, I have a 2004 gmc yukon that has a check engine light on. I used the fixd ob2 bluetooth scanner. I codes p2761 ,p085,p074. I changed all 4 solenoid s and filter and gasket.and finished and added fluids and turned the truck on and the check engine light went away and 5 mins later the check engine light came on. And I scanned and cleared the codes and they are back! Did I do something wrong? Please help need this truck to pass smog. Thank you.
I have an Escalade 09 trows p0700 but only once in a while. I have a scanner to delete codes every time it happens. It slept on second sometimes it runs pretty good on freeway. Do you recommend do this? Thanks
Question: 08 Buick Enclave wont shift from first gear. Changed valve body, per mechanic, to no avail. Are the shift solenoids the same as the Silverado? That looks like something i can do myself.
Which one do you change if you have a p0785 shift timing solenoid? or do i need to check the harness for continuity first? how do i test for contiuity with a volt meter on these plugs just probe each terminal on ohms setting?
Thank u for sharing bud,
Absolutely!
It's way easier to get the transmission fluid pan out without having to remove any bolts for the exhaust or really any exhaust components for that matter.
I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado 5.3 V8 4 x 4 LT Z71 extended cab and I was able to get it out with a hack I found on here with channel lock pliers where you grip the shift cable bracket and the drive shaft and when all the bolts are loosened on the transmission pan it'll just pretty much pull right out. You can also use AC clamp butt make sure you have one that can get up in the tight space it's also tricky to use the channel lock pliers to hold while you're putting the pan back in
Good stuff. Could this be my issue on a `99 Trans Am 4l60e, seems to be an unlock issue. TCC lock is fine at the speeds / TPS that I have tuned. It's when I'm on the highway and I ease up on the accelerator, the TCC will unlock and the RPM jump as I accelerate back to TCC lock. Everything else about the transmission is fine. HP Tuners scanner shows that the TCC lock is commanded on during those times that it unlocks.
Those 4 solenoids would be the same any vehicle as long as it’s the 4l60e right? Is it different on 2wd vs 4wd?
Hey this is very useful information I was wondering will this work on my 2003 chevy Tahoe as far a the Parts and the amount of Solenoids about to do this job soon need precise details.
Nice video, thinking about doing the same thing on my H2, subscribed on your channel.
Thanks! Best of luck!
@@TheSundaeDrive i have a question, are these solenoids on ebay of 30 to 40$ of good quality? Would you recommend them? Thanks
🙏😃 rock on man. Appreciate it
Glad to help!
Which end goes in on the valve pine that popped out on the b solenoid. I noticed it smaller on the one end . Small or large end go in first
What were the symptoms before? Our 4l60 is shifting after higher rpm’s or about a second behind. Our atf fluid was thin. Will this and fluid change fix it most likely? Or is the trans damaged
I recommend removing the T40 bolts from the link bracket, its not hard even when working on the ground. I was able to use a prybar on the exhaust and use my jack to pry the exhaust down just enough to get the pan down.
When you buy the 1-2 and 3-4 shift solenoid in amazon are they the exact same so you just need to buy 2? When i bought it on amazon i thought it came with 2 it only came with one
FYI my 99 astro is a low torque pan also requiring some medium locktite and expressly no grunts while torquing 😁
Is this what controls the automatic shifting ? something happened to my 4l60e on my chevy avalanche and now i have to manually shift from 1 2 3 to drive - would this cause that issue ?
I have a 2016 chevy tahoe LTZ that's shuddering at low acceleration only, but only after the engine is warmed up. Could this be the torque converter solenoids?
