  • IN WHICH our intrepid recreatrix scrambles to make some cold-weather gear for her kiddo, because apparently Texas is cold sometimes (who knew?). Come along with me as I make a flannel medieval tunic suitable for a chilly SCA war.

    Yes my daughter went to all events with us from 3 months on. She stopped as a teen but got back into it as a young adult. She met her husband there, a 3rd generation member! Trying to keep kids garbed can be a challenge. Note that polar fleece can be made into a warm hood that feels soft and has the look of felt, advice from the mother of an "everything itches!" Kid.

    I love that Tornado’s reveal, it looks so good on them! Very cozy and warm, but not too hot. Also, I’m extremely sensitive to fabrics and the feel of what’s against my skin (don’t even joke about tags on clothing 😂) so I appreciate that you took their needs into account so much when making this!

      I actually did end up making a wool tunic too because the forecast was on the thirties, but I lined it in the leftover flannel to the armpits and up to the elbows so there’s no itch on sensitive skin, if they wear it over something else.

    Aw Tornado looks like they really love it. That burgundy and great combo is so nice!
    I think it’s so fun to get kids involved in stuff like this. I lived in a small village growing up and it had a lot of parties and events where all the kids were involved and participated or ran around, as well as the adults. I feel like it gave me and my friends a sense of community and made us more responsible human beings in the end. Able to relate to adults even during the terrible teen years 😂

    I am going to add this video to my handout on Kids' garb as a resource. I love the fact that you included Tornado and have taken their needs into account. It's great seeing more people involving their children.
    Yes, I've been doing a Children's garb class for over 10 years and I need to update some of the sources and ideas to try to make things easier for some of the newer parents to the SCA and sewing.

    Fantastic outfit. That is a happy Tornado - they look absolutely smashing. Glad to hear the camping was so much fun for everyone involved...
    _Small Suggestion_ - Have you thought of including the whole 'hashtag' thing as part of your video titling? The stuff in blue that gives geographic or topic points...? You could do one for your Featherweight... entice the cult of happy humans who like watching other humans play with that brilliant piece of machinery? I know they're big in the quilting community. And I think the model is also popular for small-scale tailors? Congrats on the increasing numbers. That's really fantastic for you. Well done.

    • @OpusElenae
      @OpusElenae  Před rokem +1

      I hadn’t. I don’t want to disclose precise geographical location, and I have no idea if people who are into featherweight quilting would be interested in historical clothing just because it was sewn on one. I will have to investigate further

    When trimming turnings that lay one atop the other cut the facing turning 1/8in shorter than garment turns. This stops the edge of turnings showing on the surface of the garment after pressing. Clip around the curve of neck on the wider turning first then clip the narrower turning half way between the clips on the wider turning. This will give you a smoother curve than clipping both turnings at the same place allowing a corner between two straight lines the develope😊😊

      depending on how the neckfacing is made it could be stitched down around the edge, either visibly or with a slipstitch (if the facing has a bottom edge that's folded in).

    Appearance-wise, does flannel make a good substitute for wool? I'm also in Ansteorra, and it's almost always too hot for wool where I am. Also, I'm not a big fan of the price of wool per yard... 😅

    • @OpusElenae
      @OpusElenae  Před rokem +1

      It’s… decent? Not all wool is that fuzzy, but it could probably pass at 15 feet.
