Freightliner trucks was late to come to the party in building conventional trucks. It wasn't until 1974 that a truck with a hood bared the Freightliner name. Until then every truck that Freightliner made was of a cab over engine design.
The WFC120 changed all of that for Freightliner when it was debuted in 1974, & it was continued up through 1976 when the Freightliner WFC120 was replaced by the FLC. The FLC & the newly designated Freightliner FLT cab over truck were debuted in 1977, when the agreement for distribution between White Motor Company & Freightliner trucks was dissolved. These two models were largely the same as their predecessors with updates to follow into the 1980s.
The Freightliner FLC model got an update in 1984, where they molded the headlights into the front fenders instead of hanging them off the edge of the grille. This gave the FLC a much more aerodynamic look. Then the FLC was discontinued at the end of the 1986 model year with the introduction of the FLD & FLD classics for the 1987 product lineup.
AMT Plastic Model Kits, Back in the day, they made some super nice kits. And guess what? Under Round 2, they're still producing those vintage kits & they brought them back & not to be left out. They brought out the Freightliner FLC tractor. This is a 1984 to 1986 version because the headlights are molded into the fenders. The AMT model kit is in 1:24th scale, which is standard for their semi-trucks.
AMT used vintage packaging styles & Round 2 just took the artwork from the back in the seventies & eighties on their reissued model kits. This is cool because back then they used all hand drawn artwork for the model boxes. A skilled artist drew this packaging instead of just taking a photograph, it gave a good representation of what you could build, not what was in the box. The model kits really were up to your imagination. Unlike these prebuilt models of today, where we know exactly what we're getting in the box, back then you knew what model it was, but the paint scheme was pretty much up to you & your imagination.
Now let's look at the rest of the box.
The FLC features included on this guy. You get a steerable front axle & it runs on very nice, soft, rubber tires with a perfect tread pattern. It has plated 10-hole Budd style wheels, front & rear. And it has many other chrome parts, including the air horns.
AMT says it does not include paint & plastic cement in the kit. And the kit is molded in mostly in either black or white plastic with the chrome plated parts.
This model features a deep tapered bumper with driving lights & license plate holder. A tilting hood so you can see the engine under the hood. It includes a nicely detailed interior with a 34 inch sleeper behind it. Also this kit comes with a 475 horsepower Cummins diesel engine & 13 speed Fuller road ranger transmission.
Isn't that sharp. That's the way you can build this model.
Now, these kits used to come sealed in plastic shrink wrap, but this one did not. It came with two plastic tabs to seal the box, so you knew that it was still sealed & no parts were missing.
Now that we've gone on taken the lid off the box. You can see inside. All the components, your wheels, your tires, multiple parts bags, & I'll take those out & we can look at them one at a time.
This is a super detailed kit. And when it's all done, you'd have a very nice truck to sit on your shelf with your other 1:24th scale trucks.
If you haven't ever built a model kit, you really need to. They're just super fun to do. So go on, & give a model kit to try one of these days.
That is the 1:24th Scale AMT Freightliner FLC model kit.
Wouldn't that model kit be fun to build.
