    Kenworth, one of my favorite truck manufacturers, like so many other truck manufacturers came into being by someone buying or merging into another company.
    Kenworth was no exception.
    Gerlinger Motors of Portland, Oregon was a car and truck dealership owned by two brothers George T. Gerlinger and Louis Gerlinger Jr. The dealership was not enough for the Gerlinger brothers so in 1914 the brothers expanded into vehicle manufacturing.
    The Gerlinger brothers began marketing a truck they named the “Gersix”. Their truck was powered by a inline six-cylinder engine. One of the first six-cylinder engines put in a truck. The truck was named the Gersix after the engine. The Gersix truck was framed in structural steel. The heavy-duty construction of the Gersix found itself in demand by loggers through the Northwest.
    By 1916, Gerlinger Motors had outgrown its plant in Oregon. The plant was relocated to Tacoma, Washington.
    The Gerling brothers leased a building from Edgar K. Worthington.
    In 1917, Gerlinger Motors fell on hard times and filed for bankruptcy At that time Gerlinger was placed for sale.
    E.K. Worthington saw a good deal, so he acquired the company with his business partner Captain Frederick Kent. They renamed the company the Gersix Motor Company.
    In 1919 Harry Kent, his son, replaced Captain Kent, as a partner in the company on Sr. Kents retirement.
    By 1922, Gersix Motor Company produced 53 trucks in its final year at its factory on Fairview Avenue at Valley Street.
    By 1923, Gersix Motor Company had created a strong demand for the Gersix model line of trucks. With Gersix Motor Company success Gersix Motors was reincorporated as the Kenworth Motor Truck Company, thus, combining the names of partners Kent and Worthington.
    The factory was once again relocated within Seattle to 506 Mercer Street and later to 1263 Mercer Street.
    Wasn't that a colorful history, of how Kenworth came to be? Of course, that’s not the complete story. There are many more years of Kenworth history. But for now this will do.
    While researching the Kenworth Model W925 I learned that it was only one member of the 900 series of Kenworth trucks. The W900 was the base model.
    The Kenworth model numbers are about suspensions, weight ratings and the number of rear axles. For instance, a w925 is one having torsion bar suspension. Therefore, a W925 is a tandem drive axles 6x4 having a 46,000 weight rating, with torsion bar suspension.
    Now to go on and talk about the model kit AMT produced back in the 1970s and rereleased in the 2010s of the Kenworth W925 plastic model kit.
    The AMT model kit originally had the torsion bar suspension making it a W925 but were switched to the extended leaf Hendrickson suspension early on which means that the kit is no longer a W925. It is actually a kit of a W923.
    A neat thing AMT did was to reuse the same artwork as well as toolings from the 1970s and 1980s on their rereleased 1:25th scale model kits in the 2010s called the “Retro Deluxe” Series of kits. Some might call this lazy, but I think its pretty cool that we get the old kits again and the old artwork.
    I don't know when AMT changed the suspension on the Kenworth W925 kit, some say they changed when they did the Challenge Transit Mixer kit, but after what I have found out the Challenge Transit Mixer kit still had the torsion bar suspension, so it must have been after that.
    What’s funny is when AMT first released the Kenworth K123 model kit back in the 1970s, the kit was labeled with the wrong model number as it had the torsion bar suspension for the first few years, making it a K125.
    It was changed to the Hendrickson suspension at some point in the 1970s, probably about the same time they changed the suspension on the W925 kit.
    AMT also rereleased the K123 kit in the 2010s and the rereleased version is labeled right since it has the Hendrickson Walking Beam Extended Leaf Suspension and correctly modeled a Kenworth K123 COE.

    Remember Movin on. The series in the 70s. The pilot episode was a 925. Watch it. The series was a 900 VIT. Yeah. That was the prettiest truck on TV. Bad ass.

    Original boxings of both 925 & 123 had suspension change from too many complaints by customers from torsion parts being complex and confusing when assembling - UNFORTUNATELY. Ironically, the Challenge mixer boxing should've always had the walking beam as correct type for a mixer, which it now does with reissue just released - unfortunately. Only say that because I wanted a new supply of torsion! Final irony in all this is the TV show Movin' on truck had torsion, but all AMT kits of it had Hendrickson!

      I can believe they had complaints. It was a mess. Only thing is they really should have changed the packaging from a 925 to a 923 and they should have labeled the K123 a K125 in the beginning with the torsion suspension.

    The white wheels are the inner portion of the rear tandems, and the chrome are the outer portion.
