  • The past year our Design Engineers have worked very hard on creating a Virtual Reality Passenger Experience together with our partners INDG and AltSpace. This because we do not only focus on setting a new speed record at the SpaceX Competition, but also on the long-term future of the Hyperloop. A part of this is showing the public what it will be like to travel using this new system. Through VR, we wanted to enable people to experience the Hyperloop in an interactive and immersive way. This VR Experience was revealed at our Pod Reveal June 3rd. It was great to see people's enthusiasm when they walk through the Hyperloop station and board one of the pods. Now, we can share this experience with everyone through this unique video of the Delft Hyperloop Passenger Experience.
    So sit back and relax, while we give you a glimpse into our future of transportation!

    All of these hyperloop introduction videos just talk about how fast you will get from a to b and how great it is fot the passengers, but none of them actually explain how they will solve the obvious flaws of the idea.
    1 it will never be safe to seal people in a vacuum tube.
    2 Thermal expansion of the tube makes it really hard

    • @maxwink5871
      @maxwink5871 Před 3 lety +6

      1. Same as airplanes (low pressure environment in 10 km sky) so it might actually be safe...
      2. Expansion joints exist, for example metal bellows.
      The real issue is that there is no system defintion of a hyperloop yet. Just as your remarks and my answers are assuming certain system parameters. What is the tube pressure we are talking about (10000 Pa, 1000 Pa, 1 Pa)? What is the best propulsion system? How do we prevent this being a slow infrastructure project like a new train connection or a new airport?
      As long as there is no scientifically backed proof for this system to be unfeasible, keep discovering and pushing the boundries of physics guys!

    • @nielsdaemen
      @nielsdaemen Před 3 lety +1

      @@maxwink5871 The main difference is that it is a sealed tube and emergency exits would be very difficult to implement because of the pressure difference. Metal below expansion joints would be the only option but you would a lot of them and such large ones would be very expensive
      The only way this could ever go faster than high speed trains is if it works with magnetic levitation, but that's way to expensive to be viable for long tracks.

    • @maxwink5871
      @maxwink5871 Před 3 lety +3

      @@nielsdaemen Assumptions: Emergency exits are needed; A lot of metal bellow expansion joints are needed; Metal below expansion joints would be expensive;
      What does the system look like? I wish there was a book about it.
      An airplane has no emergency exits available during flight. A emergency procedure is needed. Hyperloop could have the same. If you would use emergency exits at all... then have a lane switch once every so and so kilometer to switch a vehicle off the main road and let it stop at small stations.
      Suppose the metal bellow expansion joints are needed every 100 meter. Costs/km would be nullified for the expansion joint in comparison with land disownment costs, maintenance over a 30-50 year period, or a renting a crane for construction.
      Opponents often say hyperloop is too expensive. But in the long run, euros/ square km decide a bunch of infrastructure project costs. It will go up for increasing world population (ask David Attenborough how precious space is). Considering a single pipe of 4 meters in diameter without any additional required "right of way" hyperloop can be many times cheaper than building the infrastructure for a train or an airfield. A 1300 km hyperloop connection (back and forth) could be built with the space of Schiphol airport alone (27 km*km). We could for the sake of argument remove all 50 000 km TEN-T High speed Rail projects with right of way of 25 m, replace it by hyperloop and build a forest 22 times the size of Paris airport.
      Until the opponents show a cost calculation and a system definition I won't buy it. On a different note, surely the same can be said about my assumptions. A single regulatory decision can make the system too expensive to be feasible, or the design unacceptibly unsafe. The same way the absence of emission tax for airplanes has completely destabilized the competition between rail transport and airflight.

    • @nielsdaemen
      @nielsdaemen Před 3 lety +3

      @@maxwink5871 Emergency exits are gonna be needed every x distance. You just have to be able to get people out of there when something goes wrong. Why would a hyperloop cost less space than a train? One tube alone is wider than a rail track. Plus you would always need some clearance around it, just like on a railroad.

      1. Er is maar een testcentrum in Amerika en daar hebben ze onlangs nog twee mensen in gezet. De faciliteit is 500 meter en staat in de Nevada woestijn. (www.cnbc.com/2020/11/09/virgin-hyperloop-tests-first-passenger-journey.html)
      2. Het andere testcentrum is de buis die Elon Musk naast het SpaceX kantoor heeft gebouwd om studenten bewust te maken van de mogelijkheden van hyperloop (ik zou zeggen... het doel is al bereikt. Sinds hyperloop Alpha in 2013 uitkwam is het uitzoeken van hyperloop als mogelijk transportmiddel steeds serieuzer geworden. Desalniettemin er zijn zelfs plannen om de buis in Los Angeles te gaan verlengen vanwege het grote succes).
      3. Het beoogde testcentrum in Groningen is langer dan zowel de Virgin Hyperloop buis van 500 meter in de Nevada woestijn als de SpaceX buis van Elon van 1.2 kilometer. Het beoogde testcentrum in Groningen zou uiteindelijk 2.6 kilometer worden en daar kunnen dus veel hogere snelheden getest worden. Virgin heeft nu maximaal 350 km/h op de teller staan. Studenten hebben in Elon's buis met een soort kogel 450 km/h gehaald. Hardt beweert dat in de faciliteit uiteindelijk 700 km/h gehaald kan worden.
      Er worden jaarlijks miljarden uitgegeven aan onderhoud van het spoor en de luchtvaart blijft al jaren buiten schot voor enige CO2 uitstoot. Kijk voor een fractie van de kosten of dit mogelijk is. Laat maar zien!

    This is the time to push this technology in Europe. There is a massive demand for a technology, that can replace air traffic in Europe. Hyperloop would be able to create a solution, which would help the environmental friendly passenger to travel through Europe, with little to no impact on the environment. You would, of course, also create an cross border solution for purchasing tickets in a easy way, as seen with airplane tickets. Time to put pressure on the newly elected EU-politicians.

      Our design has both a wheel chair spacing built into the layout of the hyperloop vehicle, luggage would be limited to handluggage bound to a size that slides under the chairs (the chairs have a slanted floor beneath the chairs such that luggage remains stable during the trip) Further more an evening service for larger luggage from door to door would be required to meet the needs of travellers with more luggage. Bringing in large luggage on the hyperloop without an external service for it wouuld go against the advantages of the hyperloop = being fast travel times.
