I just bought it on Amazon last night and watched it for the first time since seeing it in the theaters when I was 11 when it first came out. honestly this movie was amazing and criminally underated. the atmosphere the music everything. great movie I thought it was better than the matrix
found this at a flea market for a dollar, knew nothing about it and proceeded to have my mind blown. What a great film!!! So refreshing. I watch a lot of movies and this is easily one of the most enjoyable, engaging movies I've seen recently. Really cool!
The trailer is so good because the images that it presents are at once evocative, enthralling, and devoid of meaning. You have no idea what's going on in any given shot, but at the same time each shot instills a particular emotional response. That's real filmcraft right there.
I remember seeing this in a theater when it came out and there was only my daughter, me and one other guy there. I've probably watched it 15 or 20 times now and it's still stuck in my head and still one of my top 20 movies of all time.
I was 12 when this came out and the trailer creeped me out to no end. I did not see it until months ago when I heard comparisons to the matrix and how great of a neo noir film it was. Now it is one of my favorite films but I think at 28 I can appreciate it when at 12 I would not understand it.
Funny. I was looking for this comment. Same exact thing here. I totally remember being creeped out by the trailer in the theater when I was around 10. I think I had gone to see Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Weird that some people seem to hate the trailer.
I remember seeing this trailer in front of Scream 2 in the theaters. I have never wanted to see a movie so badly based off of a trailer and then had to deal with suffering through Scream 2. I saw this film 5 times in the theaters when it finally launched and had it not been for the juggernaut Titanic still breaking records it could've found an audience! Brilliant film and if you get a chance you should listen to Roger Ebert's commentary on the DVD/Blu-Ray. He named it the best film of 1998 and you can hear the love on the commentary track.
I love this movie so much that I shaved my head and went as Mr. Hand for Halloween. Only cool people knew who I was. To everyone else, I was just some stranger- WAIT A MINUTE!!
I LOVE this movie! This and The Matrix are two of my all time favorite films. I cannot explain the feeling I get from watching this movie. I think it is underrated as well, not a lot of people have heard of/seen it, pity, because it kicks ass on so many levels.
This is a cult favorite of mine along with Big Trouble In Little China, Brazil, and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Those are my Top 4. My top 4 contenders would be MirrorMask, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horror's, and An American Werewolf in London. For any of you young 'uns who've never heard of any of these films, I'd suggest you give them a watch. Neat flicks.
It was very underrated and overlooked. It was one of my all time favorite movies of the 90's and people say it was one of the movies that inspired the story for the Matrix.
Me too! I watched it when I was like 5 or 6 and it terrorise me so much i never forgot some of the scenes. So last week I wrote what I could remember (obv not much) in a forum and someone just reply me with the name of it. Hope I am ready to watch it now lol.
The evil little kid is the "spoon" boy from the Matrix. Jennifer Connelly was well-cast as she always has that sleepy look. A great movie, thanks for posting this!
this is one of the few movies that whenever I think about it, i think of the trailer. when i was younger and this first came out, the preview blew my mind. great movie, great trailer
I saw this movie because of how good the trailer was. It was the perfect mix of haunting images with that intense music. The movie did not dissapoint, and I reccommend it to any Sci-Fi fan.
I was shocked when I saw this movie,it was a truly sci fi masterpiece and to this day I still don't know why it wasn't a blockbuster or at least had the recognition it deserved
A great movie that deserves to stand alongside Blade Runner and The Matrix. But what a terrible trailer. Not only does it jumble the music, but it also basically spoils the whole movie by jumping through all the most powerful scenes, including showing the final fight scene. Geez.
TF2CrunchyFrog Actually…I don't it spoils much at all. In fact, if no one has ever seen Dark City or is just stumbling upon this trailer…it just adds to the Mystery of what's going on as all these scenes are silent…yet hide the truth of the narrative around the one man and why he's so important. And it deepen's the Mystery of why these Bald Men (and kids) are chasing after him? For years I wondered this before actually bying the DVD and was floored by how large the scope of the story was, the Noir style of the city and its inhabitants, and the intense care that came with every scene.
Thank you! And thanks to everyone that backed me here. I half expected this post to just go unnoticed and end up buried & forgotten. But the support has been fantastic. A testament that good taste hasn't yet gone completely extinct... though perhaps an endangered species.
Grand...grand trailer! It presents the mystery, the characters, and doesn't give anything away but that the film will be a trip. Love that music too. Great upload!
the greatest movie ever made - imho - we named our band after it. love it - the most human of movies ironically and a tremendous narrative of the love that makes us human
I was 18 years old when this movie came out. Was always one of my favorite. I remember it did crappy in the theaters but I saw it opening day with my girlfriend at the time. Even bought the VHS tape.
This movie was great. Truly one of the most surprising pieces of cinema I've seen in a long, long time. Even the ending was bittersweet and note-perfect, very satisfying without being too triumphant.
this was on one of my local tv channels a couple years back, and i remember starting to watch it part-way through the movie and i was like, "what the hell is this?" but then i couldn't stop watching :)
Truly representation of thought provoking ideas, smart and unusual plot and DARK but interesting characters this is one of those gems that are hidden, but deserved to be digged once in a while because of how different and original they are. I recommend checking it out for sci-fi, noir and thriller fans.
I remember when the trailer came out. I was 11. The only thing I remembered until I just watched this (10 years later) was the kid dragging claws against the brick wall. That freaked me out as a kid.
As a sci-fi fan I just loved this movie. THe atmosphere is awesome and ur always trying to figure out whats the dark secret behind the creepy city. One of the best movies I've seen in the last years.
An amazing movie with an origonal idea that spawned a whole set of similar movies the following year. Though the cast was all-star and the story captivating, what surprised me most about this film (aside from the fact that almost nobody has seen it) was the quality of the CGI effects. The CGI of this film were as ahead of its time as the philosophy.
"Sleep Now" by Hughes Hall it is track 5 on the cd
uhm thank you for the input i never knew i needed
1990's Jennifer Connelly is the hottest thing to ever grace the face of the Earth.
flips220 Melissa George. All day erryday.
flips220 Agreed 100%. From Labyrinth to even today, Jennifer is gorgeous.
KineticalKreations Freaking _Career Opportunities_, man. Holy shit,

this movie was sooooo far ahead of it's time.
One of the best movies of ALL TIME
This came out before the matrix
***** yes.
I just bought it on Amazon last night and watched it for the first time since seeing it in the theaters when I was 11 when it first came out. honestly this movie was amazing and criminally underated. the atmosphere the music everything. great movie I thought it was better than the matrix
Brilliant film that deserves more recognition. If anyone is planning to watch this for the first time I recommend the Director's cut.
found this at a flea market for a dollar, knew nothing about it and proceeded to have my mind blown. What a great film!!! So refreshing. I watch a lot of movies and this is easily one of the most enjoyable, engaging movies I've seen recently. Really cool!

That's real filmcraft right there.
The ONLY movie to make me consistently grin because of how great it is. Dare I say, it's perfect.
this movie was done back in 1998, and was Way ahead of its time...
an amazing piece of movie-making
13 years in the future, I still agree with you.
I remember seeing this in a theater when it came out and there was only my daughter, me and one other guy there. I've probably watched it 15 or 20 times now and it's still stuck in my head and still one of my top 20 movies of all time.
One of the most criminally underrated movies ever made, the trailer does not do the movie justice.
One of the greatest movies of my childhood. God its so nice to see this trailer again.
if anyone is wondering what this music is:
"Hughes Hall - Sleep Now"
just thought it was worth mentioning....
One of my favorite films. I'm glad to see others loved this as much as I did!
I was 12 when this came out and the trailer creeped me out to no end. I did not see it until months ago when I heard comparisons to the matrix and how great of a neo noir film it was. Now it is one of my favorite films but I think at 28 I can appreciate it when at 12 I would not understand it.
Oh man, I remember this trailer coming out when I was 10. Creeped me out for days.
Funny. I was looking for this comment. Same exact thing here. I totally remember being creeped out by the trailer in the theater when I was around 10. I think I had gone to see Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Weird that some people seem to hate the trailer.
What a discovery this was for me. Great movie and cast.
That theme song is so badass.
I love this movie so much that I shaved my head and went as Mr. Hand for Halloween.
Only cool people knew who I was. To everyone else, I was just some stranger- WAIT A MINUTE!!
+WookieFragger XD lol4r Well played!
I LOVE this movie! This and The Matrix are two of my all time favorite films. I cannot explain the feeling I get from watching this movie. I think it is underrated as well, not a lot of people have heard of/seen it, pity, because it kicks ass on so many levels.
Love this move, Kiefer gives a great performance.
This is a cult favorite of mine along with Big Trouble In Little China, Brazil, and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Those are my Top 4. look for "Phantom of the Paradise" with paul Williams, it came out before rocky horror is is similarly crazy. Well worth a watch.
One of the most weird but satisfying movies ever!
It was very underrated and overlooked. It was one of my all time favorite movies of the 90's and people say it was one of the movies that inspired the story for the Matrix.
This was one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. This trailer hooked me and been a fan ever since!
Music is awesome. Trailer, movie, Jennifer Connelly...what's not to like ? :)
+newphx I just finished watching it, it's awesome..
The City itself, the strangers, the story the trailer all of it A

Another awesome 90's film! Best decade ever!

TomKProduction Nope, just Deja Vu.
FuzzleLand Maybe you can't trust your memories...
this movies faint memory has been in the back of my mind for a long time. finally found it.
I am looking for this film since nearly 10 years. back then I was too young to remember the cast and title.
Me too! I watched it when I was like 5 or 6 and it terrorise me so much i never forgot some of the scenes. So last week I wrote what I could remember (obv not much) in a forum and someone just reply me with the name of it. Hope I am ready to watch it now lol.
Yea, saw it as a kid and was reminded of it when Inception came out.
Gotta watch again.., but probs slow compared to films of today.
One of the greatest movies I have ever seen...I watch it at least 5 times a year. :)
The evil little kid is the "spoon" boy from the Matrix. Jennifer Connelly was well-cast as she always has that sleepy look. A great movie, thanks for posting this!

This is one of my top 5 all-time favorite films, and I can't believe I haven't even seen the trailer for it until now. Simply excellent.
I love this movie's idea way more than the actual movie. I wonder how amazing a reboot would be.
such ancient comments
I saw this movie because of how good the trailer was. It was the perfect mix of haunting images with that intense music. The movie did not dissapoint, and I reccommend it to any Sci-Fi fan.

GOOD FUCKING MOVIE!!

I half expected this post to just go unnoticed and end up buried & forgotten. But the support has been fantastic. A testament that good taste hasn't yet gone completely extinct... though perhaps an endangered species.
