Great work Sasha! Can you do videos that cover the different versions of the Amazons? The peace loving and kinky pacifists from the Golden age? Badass warriors, scholars, artists, etc with personalities and characteristics from the Post Crisis era? To the rapist and child killers in the New 52? There's so many different versions of them and the New 52 completely ruined their reputation. Incels still use that era as an excuse to hate on the Amazons. Love your videos?

This was the period in comics where the main character got swapped out for more violent replacements.
Batman was replaced by Azrael who had an even more extreme attitude than Bruce Wayne and wore a costume that made him look like a transforming mecha. But the Knightfall saga sold really well.
Since it worked with Batman, they tried it again with Wonder Woman.
Because it's not comics if they don't beat a good idea into the ground.

I'm a fan from this time. When this storyline was going on, in was generally known that John Byrne was taking over after #100, so anything that happened those 10 issues wouldn't last. Not expecting much, this run was much better than I expected! I love Mike Deodato's art, and I liked the biker shorts! I also liked how Diana was more down to earth for awhile; it was a time when the creators could be experimental, and they were! I'm a John Byrne fan, but when he took over, it felt like everything was returning to the status quo.
As for all the cheesecake art, that was the 90's!! Not only were comic book publishers putting out swimsuit issues of their female characters, on the newsstand there were all the men's magazines like FHM, Maxim, etc., all ln competition for the same (male) audience.
Getting back to Deodato, I'd love to see what you think of his Catwoman run!! It's disappointing how popular she was in her own book, created her own identity apart from Batman, but that seems to be long forgotten.

Artemis’ introduction was the most true to Wonder Woman mythos as you could get. It had all the shock sexuality (Charles Marston would approve), fused with Greek Tragedy (Hippolyta sacrificing another for her daughter) and it’s injected the series with some electricity desperately needed after years of cookie cutter good-girl Diana.

I enjoy cheesecake, I think it's a good indication of an artist's style and talent and it's just also pleasing to the eye, though I like it to feel a little more naturalistic. In a weird way Artemis' outfit being so strategically ripped is somehow _more_ revealing than actual nudity, as you could argue the latter falls within the confines of 'heroic nudity', as you see in a lot of statues and paintings (as well as characters like Dr Manhattan).
I must say I really do like this art, though. Artemis' crazy ponytail is very larger than life and dynamic.

Jane Foster as Thor was handled very differently than Artemis as Wonder Woman, save for the parental characterization. Odin was depicted as a complete and utter asshole, much like Hippolyta. Although, TBF, it was hardly Odin's first go-around as a completely unreasonable, horrible, abusive parent.
Aside from that, there were many key differences. Thor had become unworthy through his own self-doubt, as opposed to anything Jane did. Jane was a long established character with a relatively rich (although often one-note) history, and she wasn't written as as a complete jerk, as opposed to Artemis.

I do remember the Artemis era, and chose to skip it. The artwork screamed Image Comics, and I didn't relate to most of that. She seemed locked into a permanent scowl in almost every panel (resting salt face?), and both she and Diana were made to look more like cookie cutter runway models that posed alot. At least they had more athletic muscle tone.
The story idea was good for a much needed "whatever happened to Antipone and the Amazons she led at the start of the Perez run?" Also challenging the status quo of Diana and the Amazons, showing the flaws they have yet to overcome. In Kingdom Come, Mark Waid makes the astute observation. "She's an ambasidor of peace, but a master of warfare." Even has Batman say she was raised by Zealots.
Having Artemis show a lack of compassion, etc. highlights the flaws of said Zealots. Her trying to join the JLA seems out of character.
As for fashion sence, when anyone dresses that skimpy and flimsy and goes into battle, strategic tears will happen.
Biker chic style? I blame Black Canary!

Especially the times when it got so small he was basically just shirtless, and he had Mjolnir on a big-ass chain instead of the leather strap because...reasons? Plus, the weird headpiece thing instead of the winged helmet, that just looked like so many 90s characters (Gambit, Havok, so many Image characters, etc.) that I legit for a moment mistook him for a long-haired version of Havok that was for some reason not in an X-family comic, especially since that was one of those weird places when they also often took away his archaic dialect.
Also, Hawkeye in the skirt...is not half so weird as Hawkeye in the lavender shirt with the neckline that plunged to his belt, and the shorts. I really do love her original look best, though. I hope she returns to the classic outfit eventually. I love the Gal-centric take on her costume that our princess sports now, but do miss the iconic star studded trunks and the red and white striped pointed mid-calf boots. Silver age is my all time fav, when she featured an actual golden eagle on her bustier instead of the "kinda-birdish" double W she's had for the last few decades. Any time an artist does a costume design that makes it look more full and bird-like, my little heart goes pitter patter.

Hi Sasha. I love when you talk about Wonder Woman and any of the characters associated with her. First, I didn't mind Artemis. It was good that the writers remind the readers that Wonder Woman is a role in the Amazon's government and not a title given to Diana like "Superman" was given to Clark/Kal-El. I didn't like the art with that particular story arch but I realize that you have to accept some over blown depictions because of the financial needs at DC; gots to make those little "hungry" boys want to buy the mag. Personally my favorite WW artists were George Perez and the Terry and Rachael Dobson. The last point that I would like to respond to is the absence of a consistent writing/art team. I think the stories from the past that were always the most successful were the ones where Diana was an agent of Athena and the Greek Gods would invade her world and interrupt her life. Sadly, I would borrow a lot of story structure from Xena, Warrior Princess with the members of the Greek Pantheon consistently like Greg Rucka's "The Hiketeia". Still like that one 17 years later.
