The Lover's Waltz, performed by Jay Ungar & Molly Mason (www.jayandmolly.com). In concert at the Institute of Musical Traditions (www.imtfolk.org) Concert, Silver Spring, MD, USA on February 28th, 2011.
Jay Ungar & Molly Mason achieved international acclaim when their performance of Jay's composition, Ashokan Farewell, became the musical hallmark of Ken Burns' The Civil War on PBS. The soundtrack won a Grammy and Ashokan Farewell was nominated for an Emmy. The piece was originally inspired by Jay & Molly's Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps in New York's Catskill Mountains, which are still going strong today.
Jay and Molly are musicians of enormous talent who draw their repertoire and inspiration from a wide range of American musical styles-19th-century classics, lively Appalachian, Cajun, and Celtic Fiddle tunes, and favorites from the golden age of country and swing-along with their own songs, Fiddle tunes, and orchestral compositions.
As always, we gratefully thank the Maryland State Arts Council (www.msac.org), the Montgomery County Arts & Humanities Council (www.creativemoco.com), and all our other donors, supporters, and volunteers.

This music was played last month when they brought my husband’s coffin in the church and they took the coffin out. What a lovely piece chosen by our son.
I have requested it be played at my funeral.
As a child, my grandmother (who raised me) would play this on her violin almost every single night as I went to bed and she passed away about a month ago and I would kill to hear her play it for me just one more time but this will definitely do almost as good 😌
Your Nan would be so proud to hear you speak so well of her; may her memory always be your guide 🥲
wow nothing about your time line works. Jay Unger composed this tune in the 1980’s for the Ken burns documentary about the civil war.
@@martiemutsch7461 Are you thinking the OP couldn't have grown up sometime since the 1980s?
She was a legend than
@@martiemutsch7461 What’s your point? I was born in 1999. Go fuck yourself 😂
I can’t get tired of listening to this song over and over ❤
This music is nothing short of astonishing. It is completely devoid of pretence, affectation or any kind of shallowness. In short, it tells the truth. It is simply about the notes....nothing more, nothing less. It is also played incredibly well! Thank you so much, Molly and Jay.
Beautiful tune, played beautifully by the composer himself. What more could one ask?
Danced to this last night...
I play this every year on the anniversary of my husband's death. I still dance with him in our kitchen - and in my dreams. In tears - joy and sorrow. Love, beauty, fragrant flowers everlasting - his legacy, captured in this melody.
in our senior years my wife learned to play the violin and i learned the guitar. her favorite songs were lover waltz and ashokan farewell. she just passed away in nov 2021 and i will always love and remember her and hear her playing your songs. thank you
When music brings the emotion of tears....
In times of trouble... this makes everything go away x
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Just heard a scrap of this somewhere else, googled it and found my way here. If this doesn't make you feel good and put a smile on your face, nothing will.
There is a monthly dance on the island where we live. They always play this song for the 3-steppers. When the song starts, it seems a veil of silence encompasses the dance floor as everyone stops talking, and starts to waltz. This piece is truly a work of beauty.
Never heard the term "3-steppers" before. Like it, and certainly fits. Great song.
I envy you God bless
I bet that is magical
I hope you are still dancing on the island where you live. I am dancing with you in my heart.
This is the Gold Standard for Lovers Waltz! Authors of the tune performing it,with a great room, a very fine piano, and outstanding sound and video. Please circulate to your friends.
@oLiViA mUrIlLo! 🤓
I am Irish - this is my Ireland. Slainte.
Too beautiful. Too much. No words required.
I cry everytime I hear this beautiful music! I want the CD of this and other songs.....so glad I found it here.
Heaven- Jay and Molly... my neighbors in New England back in the 70s... I was so privileged...
Beautiful beyond words. This must surely be a tune sent by the angels to these two. You have to have the right kind of heart to hear this kind of music inside yourself. Thank you both. Thank you.
This is beyond beautiful
Lmao I found you
They should never come to Ireland; we will never allow them to leave 🥲👍
My fathers funeral was today, passing away at 80. He had played the violin from his teens and loved Ashoken Farewell and The Lovers Waltz. Ashoken was played at the beginning of his service and The Lovers Waltz while his photo celebration was played. This music will remain with me as long as I live, beautiful.
I will be having this as my wedding processional song when I get married next week. So beautiful!
Christine Day still married?
NicholasC66 haha
Congratulations!
And Wonderful choice of song.
Hiraeth… it’s a welsh word that describes homesickness or loneliness. There’s really no translation for the word. That’s what feelings this evokes.
Beautiful!
This will be another classic played for the next 200 years....
Grabs my heart and makes me cry, every time I hear it.
I just can say "thank you", for sharing your talent with us. Such a blessed player.
There’s nothing to say that has not already been said beautiful piece of music.
One of my favorite, ever, songs. Touches every bit of sentiment this ol' fella has left
Wonderful! My favorite song of all time (and Ashoken Farewell is in my top five, as well)
9 dislikes, are you kidding me,this gets more beautiful every time I listen to it.The piano player is great as well.
That is Molly Mason.
Some people have a wierd music taste... I know it 😕
so emotional, touched my heart, thank you, you have a great gift!
i don’t know how to express myself...this simultaneously makes me sad and happy...and long for someone whom i don’t have
We're playing this at my next orchestra concert! It's even prettier with a full orchestra if you can believe it!
WOW, I would kill to hear this performed by a full orchestra !!
I just built my first fiddle and hope to be able to play this tune for my Mom soon. She was 101 years old this year!
Wow your mom is blessed!
Aww.. that is so touching. God bless your efforts
Bless your mama
There is something in this that is, for me, like no other music I've heard. It makes me cry every time I hear it. It's so beautiful. It's a surrender to grace.
Hiraeth… it’s a welsh word that describes homesickness or loneliness. There’s really no translation for the word.
I had this played at our wedding reception. It will always be in my heart. Beloved song
This should be s staple for middle school orchestra concerts, something for parents to enjoy.
If you have never heard Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, take a moment to listen.
I'm amazed anyone could give this a thumbs down. obviously someone with no appreciation of real music. absolutely beautiful.
James Williams ....i thought that myself
can you believe it 98 people....i take it they are professionals to and can do better
@@borispoliakov2511 could sadley be because he is Jewish
@@capitantoad773 I was thinking it must be foreigners with no appreciation for western culture and Muslims would seem to fit both our guesses
Never a song that's not a gem. I've been a big fan and they never disappoint.
I've been captivated by this tune ever since I first heard it watching a documentary back in the early 90's called Brother's Keeper.
Stumbled upon Jay and Molly the other night by accident and am freakin' speechless----HOW AMAZING their music is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so moved I cannot find words to describe their music...heavenly!
Amen!
My very favorite waltz.
Ask for it of the DJ at weddings, so my wife and I can introduce it to all the younger folks.
Jay & Molly are old friends of my Mom's. They're absolutely wonderful people, they used to play at Tree Star Coffee House at the Methodist church in Mt. Kisco, about 25 years ago now I guess. What a great piece this is here.
I never get tired of listening to it ever since I heard it for the first time in an Ann Arbor, Michigan, Thearter back in 1998.
As a violinist/fiddler, I am so thankful you wrote Lover's Waltz. It it fills my heart and everyone else's, every time. This and Ashokan, what a joy to play! Bless you both, Jay and Molly. :)
When I'm gone play this , when you hear this or dream this , remember me for the good that I did, no more, no less .... Smile, I'll be close
Well said, Lisa
These are the lyrics I think of when I listen to this breathtaking waltz...
For all my life, I want you right here by my side
My hand in yours, I need you right here by my side.
I will take care of you and love you all my life
Forever one, we’ll be husband and wife
Through the years, I promise joy, I promise love, I promise laughter
Please just stay with me, by my side
And together we’ll build a life, be happy ever after
If I can love you all my life.
For all my life, I want you right here by my side
My hand in yours, with prayers, we’ll take the adversity in stride.
I’ll love you and care for you all my life
Forever one, we’ll be husband and wife
Through the years, I promise joy, I promise love, I promise laughter
Please just stay with me, by my side
And together we’ll build a life, live happily ever after
If I can love you all my life.
+yngatheart Beautiful lyrics; how lovely it would be to play or sing for a loved one.
i love it :(❤
yngatheart , I'm speechless. what a wonderful words..
Thank you so much. The words came so quickly and practically poured out on paper as tears rolled down my cheeks as I listened to this hauntingly beautiful waltz.
I'm a singer/songwriter, and my wife and I are a vocal duet. We absolutely love this melody, and hoped that we'd find lyrics to it. But apparently Jay and Molly wrote it to as an instrumental piece. I believe that's only because they were waiting for YOU to write lyrics to it. We are still performing to small audiences, and would love to be able to perform your lyrics to this melody. If I have your approval, I'll ask Jay and Molly for theirs. OK?.
What a Beautiful piece of music, I can't stop myself from keeping playing it over and over again.
Thank heavens, literally, l discovered this incredibly beautiful music before l depart this lovely planet!
i fall in love with this song every time i hear it :)
One of my old mans favorite songs was an Asheton farewell. Just wish I could have played this for him on my violin. In my Dads passing days he woke up only two times, one with my little dog Heidi would jump upon his bed and when I would play the violin for him. I'm no Jay Unger, never will be. Just wish I knew about this song before my Dad passed.
When I play it I say this is for you Dad.
I love what you wrote
So absolutely gorgeous. Thank you, Jay and Molly for this beautiful rendition of an amazing piece.
What a Beautiful piece..Thank you so so much...
I have to keep coming back to this. It's not only a beautiful number but it says worlds about a loving couple
I never get tired of this song. As someone said no words required. A wonderful piece.
Beautiful music found them listening to Alison Krauss . Never knew the sweetness of such music . I missed out the last 60 years of my life
But you got there. Congratulations. You still have another what? 20? 30 years? of enjoyment. Bravo! God bless the Internet!
When Jay and Molly first performed this on Prairie Home Companion, I fell in love with. My grandfather was a violin player, he called it a fiddle :) and this brought back fond memories for me. Years later, our daughter proudly walked down the aisle on her fathers arm, forgoing the tradition wedding music for The Lover's Waltz. Thank you Jay and Molly.
Wow! What a fantastic choice!
This pieces never fails to move me to tears, and has since I first heard it years ago. I am not an emotional person normally, but Lover's Waltz just ALWAYS does it to me. Magic, of the best kind.
I'm not typically given to tears, but this does it to me. What's the deal anyway? Very moving. Thank you so much for posting this.
+goodcatholicboy Does that to me,too!
How could anyone with even a slight musical ear, give this a thumbs down?
You play so beautifully and with so much emotion. If I listen to it very closely , it brings me to tears.
Still my favorite!!❤❤❤❤❤
Lovely music. Lovely couple. Thanks for making my day bright.
made me tear up....
I've heard this played on so many days, in so many ways, but there is none more hauntingly beautiful than this rendition.
Any one care to dance? Can't remain seated with the lift of this melody! I am humming as I work. Tears with the memory of love.
Hello Jay, very nice song and played very nicely on your violin. best regards ,Ludwig
I must be getting old. I have always liked waltzes. Now, I love them dearly and this is the best of them. A beautiful, very meaningful, tune.
OMG I have tears every time I hear this ....omg. Positively The Most Beautiful Waltz EVER Written ! Thank You ! I stopped telling my dance partners the song title because it scares them and they go stupid. Too bad. It's only a dance. Now I just say I don't remember.
I keep coming back here, amazed at how beautiful it is.
These people make some of the most beautiful music I have heard of late. I have never heard of them before and am so darn happy I know who they are now. Exceptional.
A great love song. shows how much they love each other and there music. This is the first song i ever heard from Jay and Molly and fell in love with there music.
This song reminds me of the first dance with my husband on our Wedding Day April 8th 2017..
We were both in period dress for 1865... Something in the music is so emotional it brings happy tears to my eyes.. Love it...
The lyrics written by a listener on this page are beautiful as well.
This is so beautiful - makes me cry every time. Every note is played to perfection. Long live music!
First time hearing it tonight- gorgeous!
We danced to this song at our wedding.
My brother played this song with a string quartet, and it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard- so is this performance. What a wonderful song!
Made me cry.
Moves me in a way I can't describe. My sister just died and we held each other and swayed together to this sweet music until my other sister who has also passed on took her in her arms and held her softty and swayed with her. they saw the other and forgave and comfort came to them..
a simply beautiful melody - beautifully played!
Absolutely beautiful and very beautifully done!!❤️👏👍👍✝️🌹🛐💓🇺🇸🎆🌄
Jay and Molly
We played this as our last song for nearly 30 years at our monthly Swing Dance in West Hartford, CT. It was my and the crowds favorite song. Even after 30 years we looked forward to it and never got tired of waltzing to it. Thank you.
Zel Dolinsky
I am in love with this song. Jay and Molly love there music they share and so much love in what they write and play.
A year ago tonight, my next door neighbour Dimitri's Arrenopoulis (Taki), was taken by illness.
Tonight, on the eve of his minnemosino ( one year memorial) I'm listening again in his honour 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
It's amazing how the mixture of two instruments and their sounds can provoke beautiful feelings and touch the heart, without a word .... is the magic of music thanks Jay and Molly for giving his art and sensibility
This is so beautiful it's like a painting when listening to music, it tells a great story that I can see in my mind.
Playing this for a concert. It's good to hear the writer play it, knowing how they wanted to play it. Not like bach songs, where it's ALWAYS other people playing it! Bravo! So lovely, and his double stops are perfect! and so are his grace notes. SO PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!
beautiful waltz. nice hat too....
this is An absolute Beauty !
I only wish I could play this piece. I could die a happy man!!
Aren't we lucky to have such talented people in this world, from whom such beautiful music flows, and that the internet has made it so accessible to us all? I would probably never have heard this wonderful piece, or indeed of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason and their wonderful music, had I not had CZcams.
Unique. Brilliant. Beautiful. Soulful. Lovely. Masterful.
So moving and romantic. Thank-you.....
This is one of my favorites
I can just see my beautiful auburn-haired daughter and her future husband dancing to this at their wedding. It's perfect. Thank you for sharing it.
In the hands of Jay Ungar, a fiddle truly comes to life like no other instrument.
Beautiful! You two are still reaching us out here. I find myself working on my place in these Tennessee hills, whistling that melody to myself. And the squirrels. They love it, also.
Absolutely gorgeous Its
one for our Irish to adapt !!!
You kidding me, I’m 8 years late to this performance. Never to late for Perfection. Thanks for sharing.
I never tire of this lovely melody.
