He's simply a very, very good footballer. People were just caught off guard since he plays for Leeds.
Leeds fans have been banging the drum for years that he was a good player, but people were just too blinded by hating Leeds to see it until he showed it in a game that matters for England. I have to admit though, I never thought I’d see him shine as an 8, I always thought England would get the best out of him by playing him in the 4 role he plays at Leeds

Bielsa’s impact on him has been incredible. It was almost like watching Redondo minus the back heels
Bielsa has this habit of turning unknowns into stars, the guy has a great eye for talent!
He made Javier Mascherano debut in the Argentina National Team before he had even played one game with his own club first team! Talk about spotting!
He proves why you should pick the correct players not just the players that play for the big clubs. Look how well that’s working for Italy
Leeds are a big club. Traditionally bigger than Chelsea, Spurs and yes, Man City. They have been stuck down the leagues for so long people have forgotten that or just have no idea about it because they are too young. They are on the rise again and will show their size in the coming years.
@@neiltrott6461 I support MUFC but I agree. They were up there with the best teams when David O'Leary was managing them and had they not sold Rio (to us) would probably have kept going and won the league at least once.
I feel like it's a while since England had this kind of player. Proper midfield general, stomping authority over the pitch and clinical passing. Wonder if he'll stay with Leeds...

He is a Leeds local - not just a Leeds player….
Talk of him replacing Wijnaldum. Could see that. But as a neutral would prefer he stay at Leeds and help establish them up the table. But many players who claimed loyalty to "lesser" teams have been prized away. Wouldn't be shocking.
He is an absolutely top defensive midfielder, i.e. a midfielder whose defensive and breakup game is top… the fact he excels at the bruiser, interceptor physical role, yet also has a sublime long passing range and an ridiculous engine (probably from Bielsa’s conditioning) makes him a fantastic all round player… and he’s got a great haircut!
I just loved his tactical fouling against Croatia. It’s why Modric couldn’t really put his foot on the ball and control the game. The finesse on top makes him so good to watch.

People saying it’s just one good game. This mans been doing that consistently this season and if not better. He’s a big reason Leeds finished so high.

Honestly that day he proved he can cut it at CL level. It’s exactly what you want from your deep midfielder. Very Busquets esque.
I say this a lot. He fouls so often without getting booked. He's excellent at it.
He's very good at winning the ball back as well as playing short and long passes. He can also make runs towards the box and play in the forwards. All of this is capped off by his surprising free kick ability. Top player and top lad.

Amazes me how every tournament, whichever manager we have, they always overlook players like Kalvin Phillips and don't get a sniff in the team. I hope his performance is the start of seeing players from teams out of the top 5 + Tottenham get more play time. Still baffled by the fact Max Aarons didn't even get a mention in the provisional squad. Second best right back behind Trent

I just don’t think depth at these tournaments is as important as some people believe. I mean they are what, 7 game tournaments if you go the whole way? England simply has too many really good players, most of whole will see little to no time on the pitch, and not enough great players...
I mean if games were played 26 on 26, England would probably win... but they aren’t.
Partly I agree with you. Especially with regards to goalkeepers and defence, you only need 1. Because coaches don't like to rotate or sub them because they need to be a cohesive unit.
You have to have a little variation in midfield and in attack for both to re-energise the team after 60+ minutes and for tactical variation. Like bringing on a winger for an inside forward or a poacher for a tank.
But most of the times the same 12-13 players will play the majority of minutes and 6-8 will never see meaningful minutes, so yeah.

@@Daniboi971 They may have been overrated but it was on the back of some very good results, and some very good performances before the tournament and during qualifying. They've been shocking and its been very surprising. There must be something deeper going on there psychologically or tactically.

@@shambhav9534 Lampard was sacked end of Jan. Chelsea were reportedly backing him, despite the poor form, as late as early Jan. The scoopwas definitely relevant given that it showed a contradiction in the stance the club had (reportedly) adopted just a few weeks before.

He was not nearly as good as english media and fans believe. He had a moment of brilliance but mostly that midfield struggled in getting the ball to Kane and looked often static and prevented England from quickly playing out from the back. Go back and look at the amount of times the defenders struggled getting the ball into midfield..
After the first 20min Croatia with the ancient midfield they have mostly bossed that midfield while England played long behind into the wide channels.
@@logirex True. England will struggle horribly against the better possession-based sides in the tournament if the play in a similar fashion.
They might be better off not winning the group given the last 16 arrangements.

He's been very good for Leeds Utd, one of the - if not the - most watchable teams in the PL. This is probably his first high-profile 'big game', but he's very useful and has shown he can fit into a good side.

Other than a couple duff games where he was carrying an injury he's been absolutely brilliant for Leeds this season, has just gone massively under the radar until now for some reason.

Kalvin Phillips got schooled by Verratti and Jorginho at the euros final. Bellingham sgould be starting ahead of him at the 2022 world cup.
Lack of tactical understanding and living in the huff-and-puff ideals is why English fans are shouting for the eye-catching ones like Grealish and Chilwell instead of functional ones like Sterling, Phillips and Trippier. Same reason goes to why top EPL clubs tend to prefer non-English managers, you can't just play huff-and-puff football to compete in Europe.

For the Scotland game, I’d put Philips instead of Rice and add an attacking midfielder - Maybe Grealish or Sancho - in a 4-14-1 formation. E.g Philips (holding), Sterling (left), Sancho (Right), Foden & Mount (Central).
